G-Mac, Steal This Idea

  • Starting Friday night in the western suburbs, North Riverside Park Mall has a new policy.

On Friday and Saturday nights, no one 17-years-old or younger can come inside the mall unless he or she is accompanied by an adult. The policy starts at 6 p.m.

The bottom line - no more hanging out at the mall, kids. Fox 32 News went to North Riverside Friday night and yes, they're checking IDs.

For several generations of kids, the mall was the default option when there was no school the next day and nothing else big was going on.

But the North Riverside Park Mall says it's become too much and the place has gotten overcrowded with kids who are not doing any shopping. They're just using the place as a rec center.
So how about Michigan Avenue merchants start using this on weekends?

Too bad there isn't a way to use it on the whole of downtown as soon as the weekends kick in this summer. Kind of like a curfew for the beaches, the tourist areas and any other area decent people want to spend time and money at.

UPDATE: It's private property readers, so all you claiming it's unconstitutional, you might want to reread the document in question, and if you find the words "shopping mall" anywhere, we'll donate $100 to the Police Memorial of your choice.

To the others who say we're off base, read the last paragraph - we admit there's no way to use it on the whole of downtown.

An assclown idea, SCC. Lots of young (under 17) tourist$$ with money to burn (not to mention teenaged suburbanites, again, with $$ to spend), come into the city on a regular basis. The same laws that would apply to the potential 'wilding' folks would have to apply across the board, so don't expect it to happen. There are no 'inside malls' on Boul Mich, and it won't happen at Water Tower Place.

What is so amazing is having supervisors placed in positions to perform duties that are way above their skill set, knowledge, and abilities.  What is more amazing is these supervisors have the blessing of many of their exempt friends.   Even a rookie can tell when a stressed supervisor is in way above his/her capacity.
Having such supervisors in sensitive positions that need a thinking tank (Brains), quick decision responses to in progress incidents (not having selective deaf ears when dispatch is calling, etc).  This job is skill based, always is and was.  Just because your mommy/daddy, sister/brother who were/are on the job and did well in job category (x) does not privilege you or others to be in a similar position.
Earned and not given!  But who are we to judge.  Mistakes happen and keep happening.  Learning on this job is never ending!  Why is it always acceptable that officer x, a relative of y, can be given such privileges.  Where are the accountability measures?  Fair meritorious nomination, NOT.

Sad that it's come to this. I hung out at the mall during my early teen years, worked there too (Evergreen). My friends and I had no other place indoors to hang out at. Sorry that the bad kids ruined it for other ones.

Except for team sports, there isn't much constructive activity for teenagers apart from working. Team sports isn''t the answer for all because smaller kids tend to get hurt.

Considering the "wilding" and other miscreant behavior of some African American youth, it was inevitable that something had to be done to contain the problem.

Last time I checked, there were at least 3...Water Tower Place, 900 N. Michigan Shops and North Bridge at Michigan & Grand. Just because it's not on one or 2 levels, doesn't mean a place isn't a mall.

Water Tower already posts signs on each level warning people that they will be ejected for loud, obnoxious behavior.

And the bad behavior isn't unique to south side malls and Michigan Ave. The HIP used to be a cesspool of NW side kids acting like fools, until they implemented loitering rules....Does the name Frank Balzano ring a bell? I won't go to Lincolnwood Towne Center anymore due to the BS that goes on out there. Have you been to Old Orchard lately? I've been to many other suburban malls, where the kids out there are just as obnoxious and rude as our little homegrown heathens.

Stopped shopping at the North Riverside Mall years ago. It was becoming a gang infested dump. The increased security should have been added years sooner. It is probably too late to change the public perception that the mall is unsafe.

This is not merely a Chicago area problem. It is happening nationally. Similar episodes have occurred at the Mayfair Mall (suburban Milwaukee) and the Mall of America (Twin Cities area).

The unruly youths in each of these locations match the descriptions of those engaged in wilding here.

State police were concerned for our safety -- because you know -- a highway with all those speeding cars and trucks is dangerous.

Only problems is that no-one was going ANYWHERE.

The word expressway conjures up images of traffic moving 55 MPH plus. This so-called expressway was a parking lot this AM and we call that World-Class here in Raim-allah-land.

It's a police that is ultimately unenforceable, if contested. If police are called to enforce this policy, the ACLU will be licking their chops. While the mall is "private" property, most of it is open to the general public during normal business hours. You can't exclude a group based on race, age, gender, etc., to a place that is otherwise open to the public. I believe they should be able to implement this reasonable police but the liberal courts would probably think otherwise

Tough shit. Not my problem. Not the Mall owner's problem. Not the store's problem. It's the PARENTS problem - let the figure it out with their kids.

Just some suggestions:

1) Read a book. If you don't have any, there are magical locations called LIBRARIES... But you do have to know how to read. If you don't - visit your local SCHOOL - it'll ensure you have something to do throughout your life because you'll have SKILLS that people will want to pay for.

2) Sit and stare at the wall.

3) Talk to your friends - person to person... quietly please. The whole block doesn't need to hear the shuck and jive.

4) Clean something. Start with your neighborhood and removing the tagging crapola.

5) Do something nice for someone. Cut their grass. Take out their trash. Help them out with something else.

6) Paint something - no taggin' - actual, real deal painting so the place doesn't look like a shit hole.

7) Get a job. If you can't get a job, create a LEGAL business. Clean up. cut lawns. Wash cars. Shovel snow. Wash windows. Paint. Sell lemonade. Lifeguard at the pool. Caddy at a golf course. Work at some rental stand or another...

But see #1 about reading and school first, otherwise #7 isn't gonna pan out.

Mr./Mrs. quotations,

I can see that you apparently have never heard of the term. Rather than define it for you on here, I suggest you walk into your next roll call, find someone with more than three weeks on the job, and ask them about it. While your at it, ask them what the whole "police etiquette" thing is all about. The rest of the department will be better for it once you figure it out. Just in case you're still struggling with the concept, I'll give you a brief synopsis. It involves utilizing discretion based on the circumstance you're in. I was addressing one specific person in an effort to help them realize that they made a dickhead decision. It wasn't a jab at every bike cop in 019, just one. I certainly think attitude should impact discretion, but apparently in this particular case it didn't.

If you want to be the type of guy/girl who never exercises discretion in an effort to fill your court key, then so be it, that's your right. But it's also my right to say "fuck you" when I think you're being an asshole.

Let me emphasize again, I wasn't trying to discredit all the bike cops in 019, just one in particular. I give the rest of you all the credit in the world for dealing with all the drunken nonsense that goes on around Wrigley.

Yes, there were incidents at the Mall of America. However, several years ago they implemented the same policy (I expect the Illinois mall copied the Mall of America). People howled about it (racism, ageism, blah, blah, blah) but it worked, and it is still in effect. I don't know if it was formally challenged, but it is still there.

Oh yeah, I went to the Mag Mile a few times since the shutdown, very few shitbirds lurking about, just happy, happy tourists and people.
Can we sandbag that Redline project until 2020?
