RIP PO Samuel Jimenez
Only this post tonight. We got this from a frequent reader who sends us things.
- An officer died yesterday. I did not know him, but I've known hundreds, maybe a thousand like him. Clean uniform (mostly), shiny leather gear, insignia all in place, scuffed shoes from all the calls and alleys and stairs and vacant lots.
I was young once, and seldom have I felt so old as I do tonight. I realize how much I've seen, forgotten, tried to forget and failed. Nearly 25 years. Still a rookie to some, a dinosaur to so many others. The Circle of Police Work.
In spite of all that's going on, on how "staying fetal" is the somewhat accepted practice of policing nationwide, this kid, this young and (I'm guessing here) idealistic kid, upheld the finest traditions of police work. He ran to gunfire. He wasn't ambushed like so many of our brethren recently, he ran toward danger. People were in danger and he went where he was supposed to go.......and it killed him.
What do you even say to that? What words can even measure up to that sense of duty, that willingness to sacrifice it all, that feeling that somewhere, someone is in trouble and G_ddamnit, I'm going there to sort it out somehow, even at the cost of everything.
Once again, the pipes will play and the drums will thump, a funeral will be held and the world will be less for the passing of a cop doing his duty.

It's a sad day for Law Enforcement the world over. I did not know this young man but I cried. After all, he is still my brother. I feel for his wife and kids. I feel for his mother and all his other relatives. I also feel for his true friends that knew him before the academy and the friends he met during. We lost a good man today. I didn't know him yet he was still my brother.
Sending my deepest condolences to the officer's family and the entire CPD. Such a heartbreaking loss. Rest in peace, Officer Jimenez.

I'm not real religious but believe - and trust - heroes get a special place in Heaven.
One other comment I'm unable not to write - this city, as it is now, doesn't deserve the actions this brave copper took. No honorable death is ever in vain tho, because it leaves behind the memory of what goodness, decency, and most of all, courage is, for others to admire, learn from, and carry with them forward.
Bask in the eternal light of peace now Patrolman Jimenez, you earned it.
I don’t even know this officer but I feel so bad. I was out at the morgue to do what I could. It is a bad night for the CPD Family. I can’t stop crying. I wish I could do something.

As I watched this horror story play out on the news I felt sick to my stomach once again. I wondered if things will ever get better. Will my kids and grandkids live in a countrythat has compromised its morals or will it turn around ? As I watched the procession that was formed leading to the ME’s office I shed tears. But seeing that brotherhood made me feel better. There still are people of character in this world. That was embodied bythe showing of brotherhood from all the police and firemen. They saluted this young man and will continue their job even while grieving. I hope in the days ahead SCC will post a link to whatever source is available to help this young family out. They should never want for anything . The 3 people taken in this tragedy were all a credit to the human race. All very young people. Rest in peace young officer. You have somehow restored my faith that we will turn this ship around again. With people exactly like you and the others that were taken. God bless all who protects us.
Frequent Reader - Yikes, us old vets and retired guys do think the same. Being retired I still yarn for the streets and still dream I am still OTJ. Guess I am normal. It is in our genes I guess. Your post made me cry and knowing this young lad gave his life for something most of us have done or would do. God bless you brother, and also SCC who is a gift to all his readers.
Very sad and broken right now. I cannot believe this kid was killed. Was OTJ when many of our brother' died in the LOD. I am scared to count the numbers of deaths when I was active. Way too many. this one hit me terribly and I am retired.

The last image I will always remember of Sam was today during roll call in 002 on 3rd Watch. He was laughing and shaking his head at his partner as the watch was giving his partner some good natured "ribbing" after being assigned an assignment to 001 by the Watch LT. As I reflect back on today's tragedy I realize that will be the last time I saw him alive, happy and smiling. That's how I will choose to remember Sam, as well as a hero!
What may escape the non police reader is the fact that Sam and his partner could have easily kept driving past Mercy hospital, avoiding the 10-1, and nobody would have known, because they aren't assigned to 001. Mercy hospital is not in 002, it's in 001. However, upon hearing a 10-1 over the radio, Officer Samuel Jimenez and his partner responded to a PO calling for help, as we all are trained to do regardless of where the call is and where you are, and it was the last call he would take.
One response civilians and politicians give when an officer is murdered while on duty is something like this, "he/she gave his life" for the City of Chicago and others. Sorry, but I don't agree with that particular phrase, not today. NO, Sam didn't GIVE his life in service to others and the City of Chicago. Sam's life was STOLEN from him and TAKEN by a cowardice animal. Now in his death he leaves behind a wife along with 4 children and it is that context by which I will ultimately always remember him.
Recently, before Sam got off his probationary status I had the good fortune to work with him as my regular partner was RDO, and Sam was assigned with me to my beat. It was an easy tour to do with a new kid, especially for an officer with time on the job. During the course of our tour we talked about the job and sports and also, most importantly family. He talked proudly of his children and his niece, whom he had adopted. At the end of our tour together we shook hands and I told him that he was a very good young man and that taking care of family was always the most important job in life. I came away from our tour together knowing that he was a quality human being. That's also how I will choose to remember Sam.
I, as well as many other 002nd district/3rd watch officers are going to miss Sam, along with his easy going personality and infectious smile, but let us always remember that for as great a police officer he was, even in a short 2 year career, he was an even greater son, brother, husband and father! Let us all remember that about Sam!

I would like to thank all those PO's from outside 002 and the Chicago Fire Department for standing at attention and saluting Officer Samuel Jimenez as his body was transported from U of C to the Cook County Medical Examiners building. I also want to say thank you to the civilians who lined streets and intersections with signs and flags, honoring our fallen brother.
My partner and I took notice of all of you while we escorted our brother amid a sea of blue lights. Thank you.
Was early onscene tonight and it was literally one of the most chaotic crime scenes I’ve ever experienced. It went from a simple domestic assault disturbance, so far south from there that I’m still trying to wrap my mind around it. Arriving on scene and hearing the volley of gun shots ringing out and Officers screaming for help! Medical personnel fleeing from out of the Hospital in droves! Blood all up and down many hallways. No idea how many shooters involved? 12 floors to clear. RIP Officer, I’m so sorry we weren’t there faster to help you! RIP to the Doctor and the Pharmacy Worker as well. Whatever triggered this a-hole, set him off to the point that he was throwing rounds and didn’t give a damn who he hurt! Rot in hell btw! While it was chaotic, I’m very proud of both CFD’s and CPD’s response! It came quickly and seemed like it came from all over the City. RIP Officer Jimenez.

A Hero who ran towards danger to save the lives of those he did not know.
I know we (CPD) go back and forth on this blog but when it’s time to be there for each other, we go the extra mile.
On a day like today I’m very proud to wear a Chicago Police uniform as it represents our dedication not just to those who we protect and serve but most importantly to each other as human beings.
Today we mourn, God Speed. My sincere condolences to his wife, children and the rest of his family.

As a City of Chicago layman, my heart aches with yours over the tragic loss of life of Officer Jimenez, who embodied all that for which this fine Departmen stands. He answered a call from an Officer in need in a different area from which he was tasked, and, when he heard shots, he ran into the scene, all the while just having graduated from a probationary period when Law Enforcemebt all over the country are being ambushed, and when his own City has shown they do not have the backs of our Officers. He paid the ultimate sacrifice because of his commitment to the City and to the Badge, and his family paid the price, and CPD paid the price, and the City paid the price, and the country paid the price. This letter says it all. It is everything. It is beautifully written. I hope that you share it with the world. My prayers are with all of you.

I said the same thing to my old partner. This young mans passing really affected me last night, so much so that I felt it was my duty to leave my home and stand along his procession and give my respect to my brother. While I did not know this brave young officer he will forever remain a true hero in my mind. His legacy to his children will be truly Earned not Given.

I did not know Sam Jiminez that well. I remember when he came to my district for one of his field training cycles. I talked to him a handful of times in roll call and I remember him being friendly and humble, which is refreshing to see. This is a terrible reminder that this tragedy can happen to anyone. The thought of this happening to him never crossed my mind. Makes you realize that the problems you have with some coworkers are insignificant when something like this is possible. Treat everyone with respect and kindness because you never know when the last time you will see them. Live a life that you and your loved ones would be proud of. Sam did.

As a citizen, I am heartbroken over the demonic presence that is hovering over the city. You all are loved, respected and cherished by so many and yet, evil make rules for you. You are our angels who allow us the freedom to walk to the grocery store. Only the evil get elected while our angels get up and report to duty knowing the hell that awaits them. I know you tell us citizens the only way we can help is to vote in good people, but even that isn't helping. One look at the wall honoring the Fallen Heroes tell us this.
To all of you officers who give of yourselves day after day so that I can live here - thank you. Thank you for your bravery, your tenaciousness, your honor, your sacrifices. Thank you for doing a job that 99.9% of us would never dare do. Thank you for working the streets protecting us from satanic forces. Thank you for leaving your homes not knowing if you will return. Thank you for putting in long hours out in the cold and oppressive heat. Thank you for being the only people working for the city who actually do their job. Thank you for everything. There is a very special place in Heaven for all of you.
Prayers seem so meaningless, but it's all I have for you today. God Bless each and every one of you. I am crying for him, his family and for all CPD members.
I have 27 years on this job. Everyone of the years has been in a beat car. Last night and today I sat down and cried as another one of my brothers has fallen.
I am retired now, almost 18 years. But, nothing makes me sadder, makes my heart race and puts a pit into my stomach then to hear a police officer has been shot. From the time I came on the job, just out of the Army, 1968 to the time that I retired, 2002, I counted 98 stars on the Memorial Wall at Police HQ when I went to turn in my star. I remember all of them, I knew and worked with a lot of them. I thank God that I was not one of them and I worked in many dangerous spots in this city. I am very sad today.

As much as the politicians, activists and haters attempt to make police officers “fetal” in the way they police, when it comes to situations like this, the police are not fetal and run directly toward the threat. was a street Police Officer for 30 years, been retired for 20 years. It still hurts to see a Police Officer killed in the line of duty. I felt the same last night as I did the first time I experienced a Police Officer killed. I did not know how to comprehend that murder, I do not comprehend this murder. I cried the first time and I cried last night. Watching the procession from UC Hospital to the Medical Examiners Office made me sad but very proud. I want to Thank the Chicago Fire Department for their support last night, I want to thank the UoC Hospital Emergency Room Staff for trying to save Officer Jiminez. I don't know who Officer Jiminez partner was last night but I will say prayers for you. I can not imagine how you feel today. Who ever you are may God help you thru this difficult time. Retired CFD - I don't listen to my scanner anymore but for some odd reason I put it on yesterday at around 1500hrs and set it to CPD. About 15 minutes later I heard the 10-1. What really struck me was when a minute or two into the situation a PO came over the radio and said: "We need more cars. We have to get into this hospital". Shots were still being fired and this officer said: " We have to get into this hospital” He didn't know who or how many people were inside and in danger but he knew they needed police help and he said: “We have to get into this hospital”. Unbelievable to most, “it’s our job” to others. I get it. God Bless the Chicago Police Department. RIP Officer Jimenez, Bless his family and a special thank you to the responding officers who did their job valiantly and unselfishly.

I came on the job @ 28 yoa, stayed 33 years during that time FOUR men I worked with, sat in the car as partners for days or years, broke bread, answered calls, shared family stories knew each other children thru stories, these men were KILOD and they are etched in my memory along with several who took the own lives while working or in retirement. Sadly I was never with them when they met their demise, I couldn't take any measure of revenge on those that deserved more than they got, not one was given the sentence that they took on those officers. no explanation can rationalize their actions, fuck their defense. Our job is tough as we saw yesterday and have seen in the past, look at the Honored Star Case it is humbling.

Hello. My name is Jane Doe. I can't say my name because I was told if I talk to the police or talk to the media I will lose my consulting assignment with Mercy Hospital & Medical Center. I was there today onsite. I saw first hand what happened. I ushered dozens of employees into a conference room so they could hide behind a locked door. Then I went into the lobby to see if I could help. With my own eyes, I saw a gunman open fire on police officers. I saw a police officer fall to the ground. I've since learned that this young officer lost his life.
This man, this incredibly brave man, gave his life trying to save me. Trying to save all those employees hiding. Trying to protect out hospital.

Because of you and your bravery, countless people are safe tonight. Because of you I made it home safe tonight despite my officer being riddled with bullets.
My deepest gratitude and my tears are just a small, simple gift that I give you. May your family know that you are a true hero!!!! Sadly, I saw your blood but I also saw your gift.... You gave your life so my co-workers and I could go home to our loved ones tonight.

First i would like to say God bless the three victims of this senseless evil crime and God's blessings and strength to there families, I know two things in this world there is good and evil and there is hatred for us that protect others. Its what we do even when you leave this job you never stop being the police its in our DNA and that is why it hurts so bad. If you have been on the job for 20 years or longer you know there are officers that are going to die, It's a dangerous job we know this . Lets just take care of one another and the families of those that we have lost and be kinder to one another.

Thankfully it sounds like his vest stopped the round.
Hopefully asshole shooter dies from lead poisoning.
This is one dangerous, fucked up world we’re living in.
While I "only" had 16.5 years on the job, and in a sheriff's department and not CPD, my heart sank when the press conference didn't start at 1730 as scheduled, and something inside me "knew" Officer Jimenez had paid the ultimate price. Thank God for CPD and its response to Mercy Hospital. I'm certain many lives were saved. God rest Officer Jimenez.

He did his job and that is the way that very copper that I know would want to go. I left the job after 21yrs only because we wanted better oppurtunities for my daughters in better school districts. But I would come back in a heartbeat because I know what it means to be a proud Chicago Copper. God bless you Sam and your family!!

Retired CFD - I don't listen to my scanner anymore but for some odd reason I put it on yesterday at around 1500hrs and set it to CPD. About 15 minutes later I heard the 10-1. What really struck me was when a minute or two into the situation a PO came over the radio and said: "We need more cars. We have to get into this hospital". Shots were still being fired and this officer said: " We have to get into this hospital” He didn't know who or how many people were inside and in danger but he knew they needed police help and he said: “We have to get into this hospital”. Unbelievable to most, “it’s our job” to others. I get it. God Bless the Chicago Police Department. RIP Officer Jimenez, Bless his family and a special thank you to the responding officers who did their job valiantly and unselfishly.

I've read this entire post with a lump in my throat and with tears streaming down my face the entire time. It's all so heartbreaking. I'm one of those 20 plus officers who has begun to question his police religion. Young officer Samuel Jimenez sacrifice has renewed my spirit and reminded me that what we do day in and day out matters. His passing has already begun to change lives, mine. Thank you for your heroism. I salute you City of Chicago Finest, Police Officer Samuel Jimenez. You've let us walk with our heads held high once again. RIP sweet brother.

I'm retired and it hurts when I hear of a fine young man losing his life while doing his job. The job has always had an element of danger to it but it seems that in this day and age, the job has exponentially more dangerous than when I was on the job. May this brave Officer Rest in Peace and may his family know that he was a hero.

Not sure who you are sir but I believe you. Please please seek some counseling. Although you may feel broken, thank the Lord you are still here and kicking. Trading your life is not the answer. There are many who died that should be alive, and many alive that should be dead but that's not for us to determine.

The sad part about this whole situation is that when something tragic like this happens the entire district/ watch gets together. Not in the 002nd district. No one ever brought up the whole GroupMe thing that happened in 3rd watch. Disgusting and sad. That GroupMe garbage was the start of something we already knew existed there. Everyone has their own crew in the district. The young guys are the ones hurting and they are the ones sticking together. They are the only ones with tears on their faces. Yesterday Eddie Johnson and Rahm Emmanuel showed up to the early roll call to express their condolences. But right before that guess what was going on inside the same auditorium, a freaking Christmas party with a live band. They didn’t want to cancel the party they already had planned. Are you freaking kidding me?! An officer was just killed and you still have a party in the district? That’s not all, you have the media out there day and night and yet the district looks like a homeless shelter. Homeless people outside and inside on the floors. The place stinks inside. And no one does anything about it. What a way to remember and show respect to a fallen officer... RIP Sammy.
On the 11th of November I celebrated the 55th Anniversary of my bring sworn in as a Chicago Police Officer. Over those years I have suffered through the sorrow of burying many a fine officer. As I read these comments a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye have appeared. I listened with bated breath Monday to the TV coverage of the Mercy Hospital incident. When the 10-1 was called my mind harkened back to the many 10-1’s I responded to over the years. The continual bravery of the men and women who rush in when others flee is only fully understood by the brotherhood of Blue. I’m 78 now and I really wish I could have turned the lights on and gone to the aid of my comrades. The absolute need to assist your brothers never leaves you. We all realize that the saying “there for the grace of God go I” was in play that day. The bravery of Chicago Police Officers will never diminish. God bless all of you and may Eternal Life in God’s hands be granted to Officer Jimenez. One last thought. I was appalled at all the phony offerings of politicians and media types during the coverage. Most disgusting was the disingenuous comment by Phony Kim Foxx. I don’t give any credence to the lies she tells. She could have care less about anything that occurred that day. She probably regretted the shooter died so she couldn’t release him without charging. The media who never misses a chance to throw you under the bus was shedding crocodile tears as well. I lived Blue and I’ll die Blue. God bless all of you and please tell your families you love them every day.
PS: SCREW Dan Walker and his finding that we rioted in August of 1968. I was there in front of the Hilton and I’ll go to my grave knowing we acted with a great degree of restraint to what we were faced with.

Heart broken by another tragic loss to our ranks. I have five kids, and can't possibly fathom what they would endure if I lost my life on this job; yet it's the job we have chosen. Chicago can hold it's head high knowing that there are still hero's in this world willing to risk the ultimate sacrifice. Officer Jimenez, your family will KNOW that your actions saved countless lives, and were not in vain. I hope they can find some comfort in that knowledge. Perhaps he was the guardian angel that saved the other officers life who was shot at 87th and Justine. GOD BLESS!

Hey my brother 69 and had 35 otj. Your a young man still and many years to enjoy. Please call and talk to the good people at the chaplains unit. You will find there is hope and that you are loved brother. You served mankind fine, you know it, the guys still on the job know it, and the great SCC knows it. SCC does not like losing a reader, he keeps many of us retired guys sane !
