CFD Fundraiser

Got this from a couple people:

  • In the middle of the night, Chicago Fire Department Paramedic Randy Campbell (Ambulance 67) was jolted awake by the smell of smoke. His Mt. Greenwood apartment was on fire.

He immediately woke his 7-year-old son, Merrill. But the fire moved fast. Both exits were already blocked by a wall of heavy smoke and flames. Randy was trapped. His son was trapped.

With no other way out, Randy did what any parent—and any firefighter—would do. He protected his son. He grabbed Merrill, held him tight, and jumped from the third-story window.

His Son is Safe. His Recovery is Just Beginning.

Merrill walked away unharmed, shielded by his father. Randy took the full impact of the fall. He suffered a fractured L5 vertebra—a serious injury we all know means a long, painful, and difficult recovery. It's a tough road for any medic, and it means he can't be on the rig, serving the city he loves.

Hopefully, he can recover and return to work.

Wishing you a speedy full recovery. Little Merrill, you’re very lucky to have such a great courageous dad. God bless you both always.

I’d argue that is a legitimate IOD claim. He’s performing his FF duties. No different than “stopping” a robbery offender in the act.

If a FF/PM is IOD jumping out a window with anyone else's child, he should be considered IOD jumping out a window with his own child. What a leap of faith. Speedy physical and mental recovery to both/all.

This man did what any good father would do. Everyone needs to buy the KIDDE fire escape ladder to keep in their residence.

Here's hoping someone who knows his details puts him in for the The Carnegie Medal. It is given to people who save the lives of others and it comes with a little bit of cash too.

I am sure he will need all the money he can get when the bills start coming in.
