Replaced by Whom?

This kind of defeats the purpose of gutting the offices, desks and lockups citywide:
  • Nearly 300 Chicago crossing guards, detention aides and traffic control aides could face layoffs next month as their jobs are replaced by city police officers, a union representing those workers said today.

Service Employees International Union Local 73, which represents city civilian public-safety employees, were recently informed by the Chicago Department of Human Resources that 293 workers will receive layoff notices this week that will be effective July 1st, according to a news release from the union.

The layoffs would include 186 crossing guards, 67 detention aides and 40 traffic control aides, the release said. The jobs will be performed in the future by Chicago police officers, the union said it was told.
So we gained 100 officers from the inside spots, only to lose 300 to crossings, lockups and traffic patrol? Fucking brilliant!

We're pretty sure this is a bluff by Shortshanks to get the SEIU to cave on certain negotiating points. Must be part of some Master(s) plan. Whoops!

Rumors have it that Area personnel will be affected and some will be returning to the streets also; this is something other than back to the street program where officers go out for a week. Actually, it makes sense since because if you go to one Area (?) you will find a secretary and then Two assistant secretaries, I dropped by one day last week and the secretary said drop off this package by the assistant...only to find out there is an assistant to the assistant.... That's great...Who knows how many 'Gems' are hidden in 'sweet' spots like this;

Alright, am I crazy? Is it me?

Wasn't it only a few years ago that they took the police out of the lock ups and replaced them with detention aids in order to have more police on the street? Didn't we used to have to be the crossing guard and direct traffic, but they took that away from us and replaced us with civilians in order to have more police on the street?

And didn't they get rid of all the data entry and file clerks a few years back? The work never went away, in fact it doubled, which forced units to take officers off the street enter data, file, and xerox all week in preparation for the big retarded doc meetings?

Now you're telling me that even though we don't have any police on the street, the crossing guards and detention aides are getting laid off, and we're going back to do the job that was originally ours in the first place?

Sorry I just get confused more easily nowadays and I don't know if whats happening is real, or if I'm having deja vu, dementia, or I'm trapped in the groundhog day movie.

Makes sense to me..."Bt XX12, please take the school crossing at Smith School, Bt XX31, please take the one at Jones School. We're gonna stack these 3 jobs on your computer for when you're done.". Smoke and mirrors.

Why don't they get rid of the "green people", the TMA's that don't do a thing but screw up the traffic even more ? Didn't the Union win that lawsuit, and the subsequent city appeal?

Rumor Control:

The good news: the City and Lodge have come to an agreement on getting new retirees paid health care at age 55 until they’re eligible for Medicare. The bad news is that because of all the POs leaving when this occurs and summer here with low man power, the letter won’t be signed until the City can afford to ramp up hiring after this summer. This will also mean that the Lodge won’t go forward with arbitration (mediation first haha) until they have a signed letter of understanding in their hands.

The Lodge has been contacted by the City of Chicago to take furlo days like they are asking the other city workers to do. A modest proposal would be for the City to take the same move that state lawmakers take with the gaming money it receives for the education budget. We're going to be getting big money from the feds for overtime, but not for new hires. Take that money (new fed money) and move the same amount from the police budget back to the general fund. Now offer POs to “take” a furlo day and instead of the POs staying home for the day and losing a day’s pay, hire them back on the federal dime, getting overtime. Working their regular car on their regular shift. Guarantee that we will be able to get the overtime on days we pick and I bet you’ll get plenty of volunteers to take some furlo days.

Don't be so sure that this is a bluff. Back in 1983, sworn officers replaced the detention aides for about a year due to layoffs. In those days, Harold Washington gave pinks slips to sworn officers, too. Fortunately, the officers were brought back in about a day or two. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

As Layoffs Loom, Daley Sits On A $1 Billion TIF Surplus

by Angela Caputo on June 08, 2009 - 3:36pm

Over the past month, Mayor Daley's tax increment financing (TIF) system has attracted some much-needed scrutiny. First came the news that the city is forking over $3.8 million to insurance giant Willis Group Holdings to refurbish their swank new Sears Tower headquarters (despite the fact that the company's annual revenue exceeds $2 billion). Then we learned from the Sun-Times that condo owners in Chicago's University Village had benefited from TIF subsidies, only to flip their "affordable housing" for a profit (essentially pocketing those taxpayer dollars). Cook County Clerk David Orr recently summed it up well: "We’re looking at massive abuse. ...TIFs can be a good tool, but this has become a giant slush fund in the city of Chicago.”

How about laying off some of the TMAs? This weekend, while biking on the lake shore bike path, I saw dopey-looking TMAs direct cars to turn into the paths of pedestrians, direct pedestrians to walk into the path of oncoming cars and direct bikes into the paths of everyone. But I guess doing away with these positions is wishful thinking on my part. Most of the TMAs look fat, dirty, disheveled and vacant-eyed --- probably unemployable anywhere else but the City of Chicago.

This is all a scare tatic against the unions. Daley is not going to want to piss of SEIU that much. Shortly after "laying" them off they will be rehired. I give them one pay cycle off and they will be back on the job. It is the way the city works.

I work citywide and yesterday going through three different districts I saw coppers doing school crossings.

I didn't think anything of it until now.

There is a saying for this: Borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. Eventually it blows up in your face.

Hizzoner the dikwad is counting on getting the Olympics and the massive influx of cash it will bring. If it does, it will be milk and honey for Chicago with construction jobs and increased services for the citizens, massive hiring by the police department too. (and lots of inflated contracts and kickbacks)

Bad thing is though, what about the mess after 2016? I'll be gone by then, but a lot of you won't.

Let's use some common sense Supt. and have your "Efficiency Study" look at the impact of P.O.'s taking over crossings. School dismissals occur when Districts are at half-staff due to change time. If we are supposed to protect the little "honor students" from killing each other at our wonderful public high schools, how can you expect us to man crossings? Look at the calls for service. They peak between 1500 and 1530. We are already covering 4-8 crossings a day and now the Desk and administrative offices are stripped so bare they cant even take some of them. Do the math...what the hell are you thinking?

But, why don't the parents of the chidrenz provide the crossing services on a volunteer basis. They do in the burbs.

There are STILL potholes galore and a lot of sewers collapsing on the NW side. Someone is gonna get hurt besides the axle on my 12 y/o vehicle. I'm going to start putting a mannikin in each collapsed sewer holding a NO OLYMPICS sign. Streets and Sans puts in an orange cone and the sewer just gobbles it up. Maybe Vannecko can give up some of his city million$ to pay for the street repairs.

A friend at 35th street just told me that Mike Masters and J-Fed are going to be doing the school crossings. It's their way of avoiding the unpaid furlough days.

Mike Masters and J-Fed. But mostly Mike Masters.

Masters.

I have to go to the SCHOOL when it's over for the day, why shouldn't I cross the felons. What place needs Police when it closes for the day and everyone who attended wants to kill everyone in sight.

This is a little OT but anyway:

The other day I had to go to
35th St. to pick up my lawsuit. As I am walking around I see several females that I'm pretty sure were "police officers" in civilian dress. Then I realize....No gun, No cuffs, No pepper spray.... And on top of it the clothes they were wearing were dresses with heels or pants suits...
I leave there and go to Homan Square and again I see more female "police Officers" dressed the same way. Now my question is IF there were some sort of huge disaster in the city what would these "police officers" be doing? Would they be sent in to assist all of the "real police" that were knee deep in the shit? Say there were an attack here similar to Mumbai Hotel attacks? 9/11? Tokyo subway? Pakistan Hotel? just to name a few. Let me tell you these little PRINCESSES and PRINCES would be talking about how great a "guy" you were at your funeral and if you made it through the disaster they'd be telling you "hey just let me know if there's anything I can do for you.".
They shouldn't wear the uniform any more than Jodi should

It looks like Daley is calling the SEIU bluff first...I can see 1500 pissed off layed off city workers causing endless problems for Hizzoner's favorite summertime festivals. They should start with a sit-in at City Hall. Go SEIU!
