Snow Money!

Somehow, we just know what areas of the city will be targeted with this one:
  • It will cost more to be lazy this winter.

A City Council committee on Monday hiked the top fine for failing to shovel your sidewalk to $500 — a tool city officials said would be used against repeat offenders.

City officials clarified language on snow removal, but in doing so it also hiked the fines and set strict times to have sidewalks shoveled.
You also better not shovel your snow into the street - that's another fine.

Like s__t. The block-long sidewalks running alongside many big chain businesses will be like Mount Everest, while their parking lots are perfect. Same with many large, vacant buildings with "FOR LEASE, ABC REALTY, 312-000-0000" signs right on the front.

Aim this gun real low and bother elderly homeowners on side streets instead.

I had a job where I often had to leave by 0530, so I was usually the first out cleaning the snow. After I blew out my drive, I'd usually do the sidewalk for my side of the street, one pass up and one back got most of it in about 10-15 minutes.

One of the neighbors complained about the noise. Blink you and I just did mine.

Laughable, I'm a firefighter and in the winter we literally quiclky shovel paths between front porches and the ambulances to get the patients to them in the "poor" neighborhoods. In fact for months during the winter the residents don't even bother walking on the sidewalks and use the streets to walk on exclusively.

So what neighborhoods will be targeted?

Call it what you will, laziness, it ain't my house syndrome, who knows, but the snow just doesn't get shoveled there. Vote on the number of fines that will come from there? I bet 0. I see it every year, morons shoveling or snow blowing snow onto the plowed and salted streets. Like the street is going to melt it away. People, lets get something straight, snow should be shoveled or blown onto the parkway or your property. Technically all snow that falls on private property, should be cleared and piled on private property. If you are so energetic that you also clear a parking spot on the street, do not pile the snow on the street in front and to the rear of your auto. That snow should be piled on the parkway. By the way, the definition of parkway is the strip of land between the public sidewalk and the street. If you have a driveway that cuts across the sidewalk, do not pile the snow on either side of it on the sidewalk. If you own a corner lot, you are responsible for the sidewalk all the way around it. Finally, clear the entire walkway not just a shovel width. Sidewalks are 5 feet wide to allow pedestrians to pass each other in each direction. Since we are going to have shovelers now who probably have never shoveled in their entire lives, I just wanted to list some basic guide lines. To all of you that clear the snow properly and diligently, I thank you. I will sit back and wait for all the negative comments from lazy asses now.

Reported a big auto-parts chain a winter or so ago, using 311 online form.

Nothing happened. Mess left until spring. Big supermarket chain, the same.

Same thing in front of big vacant buildings with real-estate-company contact names, addresses, phone numbers clearly posted.

Nothing happened.

News radio today said approx. 260 tickets issued last winter, "most to large commercial and residential buildings." Jeez, could have been 2600 tickets if revenooers were on the ball. Don't want to rattle machers, movers/shakers, A-list campaign contributors, huh?

But, hey, cut the waste and fraud and do-nothing positions and no-bid $14.00/gallon bleach and welfare giveaways to the Pritzkers, RedLoon Theater, etc., and maybe the city would not be so desperate for money all the time.

Now the city is building a giant dog bathroom at O'Hare. Will it be "gender-neutral?"

Priorities...

The Liberal-Progressive/Nanny-statist bullishit spilling out the window
at City Hall is eye watering.

So Rahm admits he's going to target working neighborhoods with this?
Meanwhile... His Revenue'ers won't be dispatched to areas with
a catered-to demographic that walks in the middle of the street because
sidewalks go unshoveled the entire winter season?

Let's be real here...

And of course, the city is on the hook for nothing as they get to pick and choose
when they plow side streets after a major snowfall and they're going
to dispatch teams of Revenue'ers to tag working people who live on those
unplowed side streets?

Talk about a piss-poor return on the taxpayer dollar.
Not to mention the very real possibility of this getting kinda bloody
with the intentional targeting of working people.

Rahm is a financial and policy incompetent whose savvy centers
on misappropriation, thievery and knowledge of manipulating
protective and regulatory laws and odinances proscribing his
thievery and misappropriation while compelling a complicit
media to busily look the other way from the outrages he commits.

Plus they're looking to ding people for tossing snow into the streets?

"Yah... Just pile it in yer front and back yards. It'll be fine."

Is there no one familiar with the power of freeze/thaw?
It can crack/heave masonry and other such...

The cornerstones of Liberalism, Progressivism and Nanny-Statism?

"We need more laws by which to extract more money from the proletariat
and give to our favored demographic in order to keep our favored demographic
loyal as a firewall against the proletariat ever gaining a solid enough footing
to check our power via the ballot box... Hopefully by the time they catch on,
we will have rendered them into a powerless, squabbling rabble that exists
only as a revenue source for us."

Or something like that?

...so I started doing EVERYONE ELSE'S BUT his.

Some people work really hard at being hated. Go through life with both fists balled, looking for something to be outraged at. Fine with me.

Endlessly noisy useless obese dogs over there finally died natural causes, then a divorce, then whole bunch faded into sunset.

Sometimes it works out. Rest of the block gets stronger, everyone at least says "Hi" to each other, chats, exchanges a bottle a booze or a nice box of chocolates at Christmas...

"Silly, silly, silly," like da last Mare said. Don't let 'em get you down.

him from post elected office harm...

Same as with 42 Extra-Short...

No real fear of any-investigative-body
rifling the mayoral panty drawer and displaying
the contents "sunny-side-up" for all to see and
render judgement.

You Coppers had better hold still and tremble

The city should just get a mini-plow and plow the whole damn sidewalks just like in the suburbs.

While working VRI last winter, I have seen blocks not shoveled and everybody walking in the streets!

To my knowledge, I don't ever recall anyone in the ghetto hoods getting a ticket for not shoveling their sidewalks!

But the city chooses to attack the honest working folks and hit them hard with fines!

This is why this city is in the toilet and the laughing stock of this crooked state led by bozos like the Mayor and Part-time Alderman!

Of course you would never target the link card holding, illegal sanctuary areas, your to scared as they will "protest" and you will have city workers shovel their snow correct rahm and the silent 50?? Just retired was planning to live here for awhile, but guess what just started a search on Zillow for another place to live maybe in this corrupt state but no more in this corrupt blood stained city run by elected who don't care about anything but protecting their own fiefdoms!!

Compulsory labor without compensation is against the law, a violation of the 13th Amendment.

The city neither provides a shovel, nor funds to the homeowner to hire someone to shovel the snow, nor compensate the homeowner monetarily for shoveling the snow; but expects the homeowner to shovel or be punished for not clearing a public way. What's next, homeowners and business owners will be required to clear snow on the street or be subject to a fine.

I detest driving on Chicago's congested and rutted streets--but especially so in winter. I take the CTA to Traffic Court often and am never surprised that the owners of River North and Loop property that operate parking garages are certain to clear their own money-making property but rarely shovel the sidewalks that adjoin them. This leaves me and other pedestrians to slip and slop through the ice and snow they fail to clear. Call 311 to report it? Yeah, like any Ward Superintendent is coming out to write a ticket...

The city trotted out this same lame propaganda last year ahead of winter, plainly saying increased enforcement of the shoveling ordinance would be used for safety and revenue purposes. Yet I seem the saw residential and commercial properties continue to not clear the snow. While they could certainly not be deterred by the fines, methinks the citation just continue to not get written in the first place. This ordinance is rarely enforced.

Load them up on buses on those snow days and make them shovel the alleys and sideways where they've committed their misdeeds.

Over in the 41st Ward, revenue came over and wrote a load of tickets for vehicles parking up on the curb on the narrow streets. This was payback for Naps telling raccoon eyes to Fuck off, he was voting no on the tax increases.I give him credit for standing up to that asshole.

From That Guy on a Bike:

Firstly, there is No Department of Revenue for the City of Chicago anymore, FFS. We were merged with the Dept of Finamce a few 2/3 years ago. The city is too cheap to re-paint all the Revenue marked vehicles with Finance.

Secondly, just out of curiosity, why do you believe that PEA's are the Mayors jack-booted thugs? While I freely admit we do respond to requests for service or requests for no enforcement in certain areas or on certain dates for this or that reason, we do Not Hit a Specific area to Send a Message Unless it is from a District or Specific Ward Office. For example, during the Chicago playoffs home games we kept our people Out of the area around Wrigleyville by request of the 44th Ward. Or we have a request in from 41st Ward to Not enforce Parkway violations in a select area of Oriole between Touhy and Pratt as I recall.

We do not target in retaliation Period!

Well, moron, I'm a lazy ass who lives in an area where the sidewalk abuts the street (no parkway). I clear the five foot wide sidewalk putting the snow on my lawn. Then, the city plow comes by and throws the snow from the street onto my formerly clean sidewalk. What, oh great indignant intellect, would you do in this case?

And another Aside for me, SCC..

I am scheduled to be in and will be in the 41st Ward all next week. I will be doing the Street cleaning in the areas around :

Monday/Tues: Oriole to Canfield/ Devon to Peterson (Grid 8)

Wed/Thurs: Harlem to Oriole/Devon to Everell (Grid 9)

Friday:Oriole/Canfield/Redwood :: Peterson to Bryn Mawr (Grid 10)

I will be in Wards 41, 45, 39 and 50 the week of the 2nd.

Be nice, and don't make it easy for me guys...I'm writing everything if I don't have vehicles for street cleaning...even Wrong Direction on a non Cul De Sac streets.

Starting next Year, I will no longer be giving warnings on where I might be located at. For that matter...I might be unit 50 or 499 next year.

Have a safe Halloween...And I do accept candy and hot cider if anyone is in the friendly mood. :)
