Statewide Soda Tax?

  • A penny-per-ounce state tax on sugar-sweetened beverages could raise $561 million a year in new revenue for Illinois, while also saving millions in health care costs associated with obesity and diabetes, according to a new study released Tuesday by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Such a tax would likely would face tremendous opposition from Big Soda, particularly given the recently passed penny-per-ounce tax on both sugar- and artificially-sweetened beverages in Cook County that goes into effect July 1. The Harvard study's revenue projection factors in an expected drop-off in sales once the county's tax kicks in.
Chicago proposed and passed a water tax, resulting in a business boom for surrounding suburbs mega-stores.

Philadelphia saw shoppers flee the city and experienced layoffs when they started taxing soda at the retail level.

Prickwrinkle is about to provoke another such exodus in two months when her county-wide soda tax takes effect.

Now Illinois is going to create a black market for soda as hundreds of small businesses start shopping over state lines the way they do for smokes and gas in just about every state surrounding the black hole that is Illinois.

Wis 5.5% tax and no bullshit taxes accompany the sales tax.

Wis run by a repub gov who within 4 years took the state from red to black and lowered property taxes.

Of course the Wis legislature is run by the repubs, unlike Illinois , which explains the death grip around Illinois residents and businesses.

Once a week the wife and I get on 294 at Golf Rd. exit Hwy 50 to Woodman's or Costco, exactly 46 minutes. The prices are 100% better than Jewel or Mariano's. Gas is 30 to 50 cents cheaper than Illinois. It's a nice ride and the people in Wisconsin are very friendly and you don't hear foreign languages or see rude behavior. Yeah I know I spend more in gas and tolls just to save a few bucks, I don't care, it gives me self satisfaction that the Madigans and Perrywinkels aren't getting my tax dollars. Starting July 1, 2017 I'll be running Pepsi and Coca Cola across the border like Bugs Moran and Al Capone. ♠️

I just found out about another tax that Rauner passed in August 2016 - out of state wine / spirits tax. Apparently the wine / liquor distributors (connected clout-heavy whiners) lobbied our governor and Rauner passed a law stating that any company shipping wine / spirits to an Illinois resident must go through an Illinois wine / liquor distributor OR (wait for it) . . . Purchase a license (at an outrageous fee) to ship wine and spirits to Illinois residents. So for anyone who joined a wine club from Napa or Oregon or Washington or has beer shipped from any out of state microbrewery - check with your supplier.

Illinois and Cook County in particular is dying a slow death right before our eyes.

When I lived in downtown Chicago would routinely drive out of Cook County for grocery shopping. Overal advantages of driving many miles on crowded expressways?
1. Overall less expensive even including gas and time. Tax and grocery cost. Stores do not have to mark up as much because of rampant theft.
2. Cleaner supermarkets. No bums or street people urinating or deficating in the stores. Remark from my daughter first time we journeyed out for supplies: "... wow I didn't even see used syringes on the floor..."
3. Not getting accosted by beggars and street people when coming or going.
4. Not having all your stuff pawed through by theft prevention people upon leaving. Granted this didn't happen to me too often. Perhaps I was "profiled?"

These reasons make a strong case for traveling outside of Cook County. Especially if one "goes in" with friends and neighbors.

So I'll plan accordingly - when I have to head up near the State line, I'll leave a bit earlier, go on up to Wegmann's and load up for the month. Will probably buy fuel up there too...

I might even pick up some for friends and neighbors and pay for my wear and tear on the car by marking it up just a bit....

The sad thing is the politicians in Philadelphia are happy with the tax. They are crowing over the revenue it has brought in. Of course it brought in revenue. If you went from a zero tax to one and a half percent anything is profit even if sales are down. If you google Philadelphia soda tax you find the Democrats happy about the revenue but then you will find other articles about people being laid off due to the lack of sales. Typical Democrats don't care about the lay offs. As long as they got theirs then screw everyone else.

Our sales tax is a little high for my liking , 9%, but the school system is pretty dang good. You don't have a hood to patrol or Dude Inc to deal with. One request though, please make sure to always talk bad about the South to any libtard you run across, we don't want them to move here. I wouldn't be so quick to blame them for this.
Pepsi notoriously backs leftists. They kissed Obamas ass and even changed the logo on their Pepsi can to mimic obamas logo.
Before Trump was elected, Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi ripped on Trump's treatment of women, after Trump won, she commented on how some of her employees were crying because they were afraid of a Trump presidency.
I emailed PepsiCo and let them know they lost a lifetime customer because their CEO was getting involved in the politics of this country.
I haven't bought Pepsi, Gatorade, Fritos, Doritos, or Quaker Oats products since. And there are many more former customers who are just as pissed as I am.

Fuck You Rahm and your bottled water tax at .05 cents a bottle!

My summer trip will include a trunk load of juices and pop!

In addition to cheap gas, groceries, no .07 cents a bag tax [that I use for my dogs poop] and a stop at a restaurant!

All stops outside of Cook County and No taxes for either City or County!

FUCK YOU Preclwinkle!

So tell me how these places going to make money off people like me with a big vehicles?

I may even start a side transport job instead of working VRI or Special and probably make more $$$
