Safety Warning

  • An officer in the Jefferson Park Police District was released from the hospital and prepared to return to work on Thursday after eating a salad from a neighborhood gyros restaurant that contained pieces of glass, police said.

"I think he was eating it, and he cut his thumb on it, and he noticed something was wrong," according to district Cmdr. Bill Looney. "He went to the hospital, and they ran some tests, and I guess it wasn't that dire, because he's back in the office and doing OK now."

Detectives are investigating the Wednesday afternoon incident, Looney said, adding that the restaurant — Brandy's Gyros at 5777 N. Milwaukee Ave. — is a few blocks from the district station and is a common stop for officers on their lunch breaks.
If you can't see it prepared, you run all sorts of risks.

I know JG, and I get where he's coming from, but the hell with Brandy's. Overpriced, mediocre food, at best.

If you must eat at a fast food restaurant take the burger that has already been made and is sitting under the heat lamp. No special orders please. You are hated by many low lifes working in these shit hole restaurants. Better yet bring a sandwich and eat in the car.

Can you imagine if someone did this to LGBT community. What if they did it to a someone of a race, gender, or religion. Why don't we start giving out a backlash. Boycott this place and let the public know we're pissed.

How the hell is this not attempted murder?

Why are the health inspectors not crawling over this dive for adulterated food? Broken glass in the food requires every last open box and can to be thrown out along with all fresh veggies and breads.

The owners may not care about the police but they'll sure as hell care about a week's closure. Where the f is the alderman?

Doesn't anybody care about anything in Chitcago anymore? Jeff Park has sure gone to hell.

SCC, please investigate the story.
The officer stated he has eaten at Brandy's for years. The object wasn't glass, but a foreign object.
One site read the officer cut his tongue, but officer stated, he felt a sharp object in his mouth, but it wasn't glass.
He was in and out of the hospital and back at work.
Still absurd, glass or not.
Officer said it was an accident, and he would continue dining at Brandy's. He said he knew the owners for years and they are decent people. Respect police.
Of course, I wouldn't trust any employee...
I'm not affiliated with Brandy's, heck never dined there.

Probably best for officer's to bring their own meals to work.

When you look at the totality of the entire incident it gives you pause, a red flag. The officer who went in to order the food for the desk crew ordered a hot dog to have while the order was being prepared. The hot dog was cold, she returned it. Got the order, took it the desk and the order was missing items. She goes back to get the missing items and is told by the girl at the counter that she got ticketed last week and the police were very rude and wouldn't let her talk and they were not nice and she kept beefing about it. The officer was polite and left with the missing items from the order. Upon returning to the station she told the desk crew what happened at which time the desk sgt. had eaten something in the salad which was rocky and gritty and a couple of bites later he bit down on a larger sharp object and produced a half inch piece of glass from his mouth which he had chewed and removed it and it punctured his thumb. He alerted the desk crew and stated spitting out food then left for the hospital. It's one of 2 things, Brandys was either grossly negligent or it was intentional. You make your own call on this one.

None of the employees would admit to preparing the salad that the glass
Pieces were in. Makes you say "hmmmmm, what's up with that?" Also leads me to think this was intentional. The owner has not reached out to the officer involved. Nice to see all his concern for feeding glass to a police officer.

Brandys has never done anything for me and I've been here for 5 yrs. I don't expect free or discounted food, I pay what it costs and if they give a break so be it, I'm grateful and thankful. But Brandys has never ever done anything for me all the times I've eaten there. Never been felt welcome but never shunned either, but boy do their delivery drivers break the IVC quite often. Oh and it was glass and not just one piece but numerous pieces of glass in the salad in question.

Even if you see it prepared - you run all kinds of risks. You don't know what the ingredients were treated to prior to the preparation.

Gyros in particular are typically eColi factories waiting to happen. Unless the place has lines out the door and goes through entire spits of Gyro meat at once, they tend to move the burners close to the spit, heat it up, cut off what they need, move the burners away so it doesn't overcook, let it stay "warm" and spin for a few hours, then repeat when people come in... After spending a summer in college working at a gyro shop many moons ago, I've NEVER eaten in one of those places ever again.

If the restaurant is in an interesting neighborhood, or you're in uniform - fuck it - don't go to get anything there. Bring your own stuff, stay safe.

Dirty used utensils laying on dirty preparation tables in kitchen. Not to mention while walking through kitchen area every step we took sounded like when you undo your vest the ripping Velcro sound from the grease on the floor..I will bring my own food from now on. What an eye opener.
