Shooting

  • Chicago Police officers fatally shot a man who fired a shot at their unmarked squad car late Friday in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side, according to police.

At 11:10 p.m., the two officers, who were in uniform, responded to a call of a person with a gun in the alley east of the 5800 block of South State, CPD News Affairs [...] said. As the officers drove south down the alley toward a group of men, one of the men pulled out a handgun and shot one round that hit the front bumper of the officers’ vehicle,.... The officers returned fire, hitting the man,.... Police didn’t say how many times or where on the body he was shot.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died, authorities said. Fire officials said the man was in his 20s.
A weapon was recovered at the scene,...
Very well done Officers. We eagerly await the release of the deceased extensive rap sheet and parole dates.
  • Neither of the officers were hurt. They were working as part of CPD’s new summer mobile patrol unit that was rolled out last week...
Summer Mobile? You mean the officers who are supposed to be keeping the lakefront safe for citizens and visitors? 5800 S. State Street - that's about 2 miles from the lake as we remember. And on a Friday night, the beaches/parks close at what time?

Did Rahm just strip the Districts of manpower again? Same as last year, but these coppers fooled him - they just got 30 days away from the street anyway.

I am also glad that you were able to go home unharmed to your love ones. THANK YOU for trying to keep this
city safe. Now take the 30 days and relax and enjoy your time. And do whatever you need to do to keep yourself
as mentally healthy as possible.

The police didn't tell the media how many times or exactly where he was shot? And that actually made it into the article? Hahahahaha! Amateurish, at best.

The officers who are detailed to the summer mobile patrol are suppose to be keeping the lake front safe for citizens and visitors? Ha! You must be referring to the lake front that's on South Shore Drive (in the 004th district). Those officers on SMP (3rd watch) are no where near downtown/lake front; they're being sent to the following districts: 002, 003, 004, 006, 009, 010 and 015.

CPD is pulling the same bullshit with Summer Mobile this year as they did last year: seldom, if ever, actually using them on the lakefront.
Instead they almost exclusively deploy them to "the community" aka ghetto.
So yes SCC you are correct they deplete districts and units of manpower only to turn around and put that manpower in the ghetto.
I guess too much police resources is never enough for the ghetto.

6/03/2017 08:14:00 PM

I've posted this breakdown several times in the past, but the fundamentals still apply as time goes by.

Anyway, the number crunchers over at
http://heyjackass.com used to have a graphic entitled "The Cost of Stupidity", which broke down the taxpayer's cost for each case of Ye Olde South Side Sidewalk Surgery™. They ran with it for a couple of years, but haven't done anything with it so far in 2017.

Transport cost via CFD ambulance is $1000. About 20% of the victims either self-transport or get dropped off (or dumped out) by the various, nefarious members of their Friends & Family Plan® - but remember, all they did was take somebody to the hospital. They don't know what was wrong, or when/where/why/how it happened. Besides . . . snitches get stitches, right? So, figure transport of victims at $800 apiece.

Immediate, intensive short-term medical expenses AVERAGE out around $55,000 per case of High Velocity Lead Poisoning©. For those that survive initially and are discharged from the hospital, there's a bunch of outpatient expenses waiting in the wings, depending on the initial trauma. Physical therapy, maybe a wheelchair (short term or long term), maybe dialysis if a kidney took a hit . . . who knows, who cares? None of Rahm's Most Coveted Constituents™ are able to pay for their medical care (or their rent, utilities, purple drank and other forms of sustenance) so the cost gets shifted onto the taxpaying public AND the insurance companies. Why do you think a Tylenol 3 gets billed out at $79 a dose?

For the ones that assume room temperature, the cost for a homicide-related autopsy is another $800. With 800 stiffs last year, that's $640,000 just for the homicide victims within the city limits - to say nothing of the rest of the County. Some may have taken that CFD Über ride and some may have had some bodywork done in the ER, but without knowing how many live ones made it to the ER compared to how many wound up in the DRT (Dead Right There) column, there really isn't any way to give an exact number.

Then there is the cost of a trial (if FoxxWinkle can be interrupted from watching reruns of The Love Boat), and incarceration (you can't spell "idiocy" without I-D-O-C).

Sorry if this wasn't a definitive answer, but at least you now have some numbers to work with. It is sort of a ghastly and ghoulish Excel spreadsheet to think about - rather like the casualty projections for Operation Olympic (set for 1-Nov-1945), and Operation Coronet (1-Mar-1946), which would have dwarfed the numbers from D-Day if Japan hadn't cried Uncle after the second Bomb was dropped.

Since he is a "man". He chose to shoot at a police officer. Whose job is to, protect the public. Innocent lives are lost everyday by the actions of "men". I'm sorry that the "man" died.

The "man" made a choice. The officer also made a choice.

We see everyday what happens, when a gang banger starts shooting with his head turned away.

"Lots of people killed over there and a few kilt by the police."

I think you've got something there!

Let's get Tim Evans to order his Cook County judges to append all sentences for violent crimes with, ". . . and you are hereby further sentenced to wear a kilt -- in lieu of pants, shorts, undershorts, jockstrap, or other garments -- whenever outside your place of residence, for a term of not less than five years."

Gangbangers might think twice before committing a crime if it means they'll be wearing skirts in public with their junk bouncing loose. Plus, it'll make it easier for patrol officers and the public to identify them.

"The suspect is 5'10", approximately 160 lbs., wearing a smart tartan plaid, knee-length kilt. Last seen fleeing east on . . ."

"Was it entirely necessary that these officers shoot and kill this man? After all he did not shoot one of the officers. He shot the bumper on their car. Is that reason to kill him? Surely this could have been resolved without killing another human."

One question: Are you serious?

Ever held a gun? Ever fired a gun at a stationary target? Ever fired a gun at a moving target? Ever fired a gun at a moving target that was shooting back at you? Ever take a self-defense class?

Life on the street isn't the movies where good guys can shoot guns out of the hands of bad guys. Apply for a FOID card, go to a gun range, rent a pistol, then come back and let everyone know how many bull's eyes you shot at 7, 10, and 25 yards. Everyone will be real interested to hear.

Law enforcement officers, like concealed carry permit holders, are NOT taught to "shoot to kill," but to "shoot to stop the threat." There's a world of difference between the two, even though many, many times the threat isn't stopped until the bad guy is dead.

So here's the question you should have asked: "Was it entirely necessary that these officers shoot this man?"

To help you answer that question, here's a little Rule of Thumb you might find helpful: "Anyone who is willing to point at gun at a police officer, much less point a gun at a police officer and pull the trigger, does not value human life. Not his. Not theirs. And certainly not yours."

So, how would YOU answer your (corrected) question?

Absolutely it could have been resolved in another manner, however, it would involve further endangering the lives of the police officers and, in turn, benefitting an offender trying to kill those police officers. I congratulate the police officers for enforcing the law, protecting the public and safely going home to their loved ones. I bid adieu to the offender who was rightfully dispatched to his maker.

For the reply posted at 08:15:00 AM on 6/04/17, thank you for a concise summary. As someone who resides in a community that unfortunately never runs out a story line that includes mayhem of some kind, I just shake my head in my mind when I encounter in my travels young folks proclaiming that CPD could have just shot someone in their leg and that should be it. Or, I encounter older folks who should have more wisdom proclaim that CPD should have immediately known that the gun didn't belong to their friend/loved one. Really? What other documentation was missing in this person's possession that would have proven that this particular claim is correct? When they were asked to follow specific commands pertaining to the weapon in question, was it a response of being 100% cooperative, or another representation of being Mr., Ms., or Mrs. I Really Don't Give A Damn Because I'm Already Hardheaded?

I'm grateful that I was taught by my elders as well as my teachers many years ago to be respectful of law enforcement. If I was going to have the nerve to point a gun or any other weapon towards this person of authority, there is no promise that I'm going to win the confrontation. If I chose not to follow specific directions as they are given to me at a particular moment, nine times out of ten I'm going to be the loser. At the end, my own decisions can determine whether I will see another day of living.
