We know you know this but please remind the newer ones that it is not worth their lives to chase these scumbags.
The most important thing is to come back home safe. These guys would be out on E.M. within a week after spending some time here with us..but nothing would change.

Too young, It beaks my heart hearing this. I still remember the day our brother Benny was killed by a train in 2002. Us retired guys love you all patrol guys. May the good heavenly father be with them and their families.
Trains can suck a person under it.

O God. This really sucks. Jesus Christ guys and gals, please stay off the tracks. let those SOBs run. It just isn't worth it. I worked in the yards in the 70s and had my share of close calls. And I knew those yards like the back of my hands. You can't hear trains coming on an electric line and since the late 70s they have silent roller bearings, not the old journal brass that makes noise. I knew a few engineers involved in this type of accident in the past, and they all were haunted by it and never ran a train again. Prayers for those patrolman and their families and the train crew.

The politicians in this city from the mayor down don't care about CPD. The CPD brass doesn't care about its officers. The "Community" certainly doesn't care about CPD. I know it's hard for young officers to not want to go out running and gunning, it comes with the territory. I was the same way when I started almost 25 years ago. I used to love going to work, it was fun and appreciated. Not anymore. It's just not worth it. I know younger officers are full of piss and vinegar and want to do "The job", but please take a look at the big picture first. You and your family are first...period. It does not matter how many awards you get or how many arrests you get. If you don't come home to your families what's the point.

God bless these two officers who made the ultimate sacrifice and God bless their families. You both have my ultimate respect for your courage and bravery doing what you both signed up to do.

I know it's very hard not to rush to calls trying to catch the bad guy. Unfortunately now, I know our job is no longer appreciated (in certain parts of the city).

Please look out for #1 first. This is just a job now.

God bless and look over all CPD and CPD families.

Absolutely appalling that some assholes felt it necessary to broadcast the names of the deceased officers - first via PDT and then by text message via the “What’sApp” phone application. This most sacred of information disseminated well before being officially released by the department; some close to the investigation claim even before next of kin had been notified.

Can anyone tell me why a 017th District Lieutenant (M.A.) felt it necessary to be attached to a screenshot of a PDT showing the names and star numbers of the officers killed? What exactly is her connection to something on the other side of the city? She’s obviously not personally involved with either officer, as she surely wouldn’t have broadcast such sensitive information without being somehow authorized and without very good reason to do so. Would she?

Hell, even the media - THE ENEMY - had the decency to abstain from naming the officers in the event the families hadn’t yet been notified. They even made a point of saying just that. Yet some asshole(s) within our own organization just had to be the first to put it all out there. You social media addicts and your obsession with feeling obligated to tell everybody everything in real time will sink this department faster than anything.

RIP, officers.

We Remember Them by Sylvan Kamens & Rabbi Jack Riemer

At the rising sun and at its going down; We remember them.
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter; We remember them.
At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring; We remember them.
At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer; We remember them.
At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of the autumn; We remember them.
At the beginning of the year and when it ends; We remember them.
As long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as We remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strength; We remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart; We remember them.
When we have decisions that are difficult to make; We remember them.
When we have joy we crave to share; We remember them.
When we have achievements that are based on theirs; We remember them.
For as long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us as, We remember them.

Father in Heaven, hold these fine young men tight in your arms tonight.

going on rail road racks is very dangerous the department needs to be trained about the dangers of being out on rail road tracks. contact the rail roads and see about getting training for all officers so this will not happen again.
don't forget about the train crew.

I saw the pic that 1109 is talking about and the first thing that came to my mind is why in the hell is somebody putting this info out there?? It’s timestamped only a little over an hour after they were killed. Whenever something tragic happened involving an officer or there was an officer involved shooting, the dispatchers would cut the mobile so really sensitive information would not be heard by everybody in the whole wide world (scanners) or even by officers not directly involved in the incident. Nowadays we’ve got people text messaging and tweeting shit constantly. Just another example of how far down toilet this job has gone. These times are sacred and do not need to be broadcast in great detail before families have you even been notified. Whoever is their name attached to putting this information out there when they did should be held accountable

GP @ 1109 is on to something. If the timeline as provided is correct, text messages of a picture of the PDT with the officers names and star numbers were circulating like wildfire about a little over an hour after this tragedy took place. There is no way that the chaplains unit, EAP and whoever else was assembled to deliver the horrible news to the families were done doing that. There’s a level of decorum that must strictly be adhered to in instances like this yet a lieutenant of police has to go and put it on Twitter or Facebook or whatever the fuck it was. She needs a 10–15 day crack for using a department computer to send this type of info. Totally pathetic, but that’s just reflective of the idiots we have in white shirts today.

First off let me offer my condolences to the families of Officers Gray and Marmolejo and to their extended Chicago Police Department family. May they rest in peace. I’d like to offer a side story to this tragedy. In the summer of 1969 there was a similar situation at 103rd & Cottage. We were searching for a robbery offender when a south bound train created such a wind vortex that it knocked one of the officers over. He was standing between the sets of tracks and was literally blown down. I didn’t know him but I found out later it was Police Officer Jimmy Alfano of Area #2 Task Force. Officer Alfano was killed in the line of duty in August of the following year. May God rest their souls.

Maybe not the time, but the thug/s they were chasing should be charged with murder. Reinstate Capital Punishment. No trials, juries, appeals. Shoot him/them in the head. I'll supply the f'ing lead.

You are absolutely right. These kids in their 20 are fucking disgusting with their fucking social media bullshit. I’ve been working with some of them and all they do is sitting on that fucking phone. But they hear from me, I don’t gave a fuck. They are so much into that bullshit that they are unable to catch anything what is going on on the street. They are useless.

“Save your it's not worth it comments. Go and say that to the officers families how it wasnt worth it to go out there and do their job. Offer tour condolences or shut up it's not up to you to judge.”

Thank you. And I mean it. There’s been a handful of borderline inappropriate, and some flat out in appropriate, comments on here. Glad it wasn’t just me having this feeling. Some people still can’t contain themselves even in this awful time to spend a whole paragraph shitting on the young kids on the job.

It was very unfortunate what happened, heartbreaking. Eddie was right in saying one of the most dangerous/scariest things you can do on this job is go chasing after a guy with a gun. What kind of fucking nut does that? Well, as a fellow nut who has done just that plenty of times, I have nothing but the upmost respect for these two young officers. The balls it takes to do that. May they Rest In Peace, and may their families find some type of comfort, even the slightest, in knowing that what these two extraordinary young men did, indeed mattered. They mattered. To my brothers and sisters in blue, I love you, please stay safe.

714 am, you miss the entire point. No one. NO ONE should’ve put their names and stars over a PDT message. Especially when it appears that their families had not been notified first. It’s not for a Lt (and others) to decide everyone should know their identities at that point of the investigation. Would YOU want to get a trickleled down/forwarded 100s of times text message saying your kid/husband/brother/wife etc is dead before having a dept rep and clergy finding you personally to break that bad news? There’s a time to share info, speculate, commiserate, etc. But all that can wait pending official notification to the families. Extremely poor taste by sometime who’s supposedly a leader of troops. Obviously she’s never been the police before and it’s all too apparent she has zero common sense. She needs to be dealt with by someone of higher rank over this. Same goes for any dickbag that forwarded that text/picture before their remains had even been removed from the fucking scene. Tasteless, classless and ignorant just scratches the surface of how wrong this was.

RIP OFFICERS.

Please know that the vast majority of ordinary citizens deeply appreciate everything you officers do for our city. While this is a very dark time for CPD members, know that you are valued, appreciated and loved by many. Please stay strong, there is no shame in reaching out for help to share your burdens. I urge every civilian reading this to give a thumbs up to every officer you see in the coming weeks so they know we citizens are here for you. God bless you for all you do.

May God rest the souls of every CPD member who paid the ultimate price in service to their country.

In full agreement with the 08:34 post. 10-15 day rip minimum. After the funerals of these two young officers, the 017th District Lieutenant (M.A.) will have a very public face to face meeting with a family member of one of the deceased. "Have you no shame" will be the topic of conversation. She has no regard for her fellow officers and lacks basic human decency.

FAIR WARNING: If she is smart, she will skip the wakes and funeral masses. If she is dumb, she's getting a public verbal flogging.
