Nashville Cancels Scooters

  • Mayor David Briley announced his intention to remove all electric scooters from Nashville streets.

In a press release on Friday, Briley said his decision came "after careful consideration," following his 30-day notice for a potential scooter ban on May 23. Briley did, however, mention that he will "consider adding back one or two operators to provide a limited number of scooters" should they meet Metro's proposed requirements for safety and accessibility.

[...] Briley's 30-day ultimatum came one week after an accident involving scooter rider Brady Gaulke, 26, who died from injuries sustained during the crash three days later.
We haven't heard of any deaths in Chicago, but we have noted more than a few ambulance calls on the zones regarding scooter injuries versus vehicles, pedestrians and curbs, so we suppose it's only a matter of time.

Does anyone know if there's a count of scooters "missing" yet or is that going to be revealed in the fall when the pilot program ends and all the casualties are tallied up?

Emergency rooms were already reporting scooter injuries the first day they were put out on street corners.
I watched people in Logan Square walk around them like they were bombs about to go off, then saw a guy pick one up and carry it off.
This should be interesting.

Chicago will get sued because of these goofy scooters!

These scooters are laying on the sidewalk, in the streets, up a tree, etc.

Just a matter of time!

Scooters are a DUMB idea.

File this idea with the one about gondolas on the Chicago River. THAT did not work out too well either.

I was in Los Angeles last December. On a quite nice stretch of Beverly Boulevard, scooters were scattered on the sidewalk, laying on their sides, waiting to be tripped over. The storm channels over toward San Pedro are littered wit them as well.

They are an interesting idea and in a well-mannered world, they might fit in. But, today, people just beat on stuff, or steal it, or vandalize it.

Not a LEO

I saw three shorties on one scooter around Garfield park over the weekend. What could possibly go wrong as they ride down Lake Street. We will never know the number of lost scooters or those injured using them.

The entire scooter program exists only to provide stupid maintenance jobs and piss away tax money. Every bikeshare bike in Baltimore disappeared last year, and yet they persist. Subsequent traffic deaths that arise from their use will justify more measures to stifle traffic and restrict movement.

Mike Royko had a good idea once about how joggers and other fitness nuts should pull rikshas' around to get fit and earn money at the same time. Seems this could solve a few problems, not to mention new tax revenue. It beats the hell out of scooters.

Found a scooter on my lawn this morning. Tried to roll it to the sidewalk. Wheels locked and the damn things are HEAVY! Ended up flipping it, end over end, into the street!

Well there you go.
An agreement was drafted with the City of Chicago and any breach will result in one of two things:
- pay the scooter folk for loss of revenue
- stop political campaign PAC donations

Unfortunately it’s going to take a couple few noggin cracks related to decrepit street conditions (not counting roaming violent feral) and lawsuits to see this unenforceable fad to disappear...but not until the Summer of Ed is over.

City attorneys are not the best and brightest, settling everything after all it’s not their money.

We can't see Obama's grades from Harvard.
Folks, have you ever applied for a job involving a professional

No transcript, no job. You play it our way or go elsewhere.

The Scooter Medical Complex......
Dumb them down, induce them to do things they didn't do
as a kid, admit them to the ER. (Cash registers ring in the
background)
Now the adult goes on disability, becomes a burden to society.
Will the government step in to stop this insanity, or are they on
the Scooter take?

The scooters are for those in the community. They need them for drive bus and dope delivery. It’s really sickening. Which friends of Rahm’s are making money on scooters?

Now a resident of Music City. They were very popular and more companies came along and things got out of hand City added parking zones and a week later pulled the plug entirely. ED’s saw big spike in injuries. No one wears a helmet so cranial injuries more serious. They clip along often weaving in traffic. Chicago will see deaths and many missing scooters pretty quickly. BAD IDEA

So happens I know Gaulke's grandma; he's originally from Cheddar Country.

The guy decided to hop onto a scooter after a few cocktails--and then suddenly take the scooter off the sidewalk and across the street at about 9:30 PM. He lost the battle against a Suburban-class vehicle. It's noteworthy that the SUV's driver was NOT ticketed, although he will have to live with that death for years.

By the way, I was just in Nashville. Some of those "streets" down there are "alleys" in Chicago/Milwaukee. Don't know where it happened, but jus' sayin'.........

Nashville has mucho traffic now. They drive like shit too. All this equals=scooters are a dangerous game. Chicago has worse traffic. Worse selfish drivers. Idiots on bikes. Joggers with headphones. Skateboard clowns. What could go wrong? You can have 3-4 road rage incidents just driving into the city. More dooring accidents will happen too.

Since scooters are motorized vehicles do they have to be plated? I think everything else on the street is, so why not them?

Nashvillian here... trust me and just say NO to scooters! They are a dangerous blight on our city and sadly I'm sure Mayor Briley will find a way to bring them back (if the right palms are greased).

Scooters sound like they'd be fun on flat roads, but Nashville DT doesn't have any flat roads. It's all steep hills. I saw a few scooters there barrelling down the slopes, grim-faced riders stomping and pulling on brake controls . . . Amazed fewer people don't die.
