How to Steal 75 Cars

  • April 15, a Monday, should have been sleepy this year for the Chicago team at Car2Go, a car-sharing service that automaker Daimler AG introduced more than a decade ago. Weekdays were generally slow, and Chicago’s streets were slushy the day after an unusual late-season winter storm. Who wants to deal with a rental car in the snow?

On that day, apparently, a lot of people did. There was a spike in rentals for Car2Go’s higher-end cars, Mercedes CLA sedans and GLA sport utility vehicles. And these rentals lasted much longer than Car2Go’s average 90-minute ride—in fact, many of the Benzes weren’t being returned at all. Instead, employees at Car2Go headquarters in Austin watched on a digital map as dozens of their vehicles congregated on a few blocks in West Chicago, in a neighborhood right outside the company’s coverage area.

Car2Go sent several workers to retrieve the vehicles, only to find that a group of thieves had claimed them as their own. Some blocked the vehicles in to prevent repossession; others threatened the company’s employees, according to someone with knowledge of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity. Car2Go has the ability to remotely disable vehicles, but the confusing situation made it tough to know which ones to target in time to do much good. Previously unreported accounts of the few days that followed from people with knowledge of the thefts, along with police reports and contemporary social media posts, offer a surreal lesson in the risks of businesses built on smartphone-enabled car-sharing. “This was a unicorn incident for us as a company,” says Kendell Kelton, a Car2Go spokeswoman. “We’ve never seen this type of fraudulent activity at this scale ever, ever.”
The entire article is a cautionary "how to" completely miss what the real world is capable of when they put their minds to crime.

Now imagine if a scooter company or ten did the same thing with two-wheeled transports covering the exact same neighborhoods that didn't think twice about taking automobiles worth tens-of-thousands of dollars. But there couldn't be that many stupid companies in the city, right?

"Snowflake Car Rentals learned a valuable lesson"

No accountability, especially for juveniles, means getting away with doing all kinds of things even if caught doing them. The chicago police department doesn't even have an auto theft unit anymore. Here's you RD number, call your insurance company.

Somehow is the scooter test thing going? Been pretty quiet lately. Guess the company paying the biggest brine will be awarded the city deal. Let the bidding begin.

HA! HA! HA!

You will again and again... Unless you want to risk the ire of the ACLU when you stop allowing certain segments of the population to access your service. Said disallowing is the only method to prevent a repeat.

Companies learn from round one. Thieves learn too from the first round. Evolution of crime baby!

Maybe the cars can have residency restrictions lifted, from their Chicago origins, and they can all be driven in Wilmette... Lighfoot would approve.

Welcome to Chicago. You and all the future business enterprises have just learned a valuable lesson about the cost of doing business in Chicago. Being politically correct gets you this.

They entrapped these poor people to steal these high end shiny objects! LOL!!! Another company falling on hard times due to the Chicago criminal justice system while also being taxed to death in the sanctuary city...And they wonder why the city, county and state are losing population...unless of course you consider the uncountable illegal immigrants!!!
ABC = ANYWHERE BUT CHICAGO

Gotta love liberal companies who think that Shitcago is a place where honesty, civility, respect for property reigns.
My old papa used to say that you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
Now for you young-uns, that means you just can't change things to what you want them to be.
Not possible. It is what it IS.

$$$ is all these entrepreneurs see. None truly know the shithole that is Chicago.
This is why we can’t have nice things.

Slowly, the scooter companies are pulling their scooters from the the rental pool because of threats to employees when going into 11, 15 and 25 to retrieve them.

If they left that “community” remain a rental car desert then they’d still have their 75 Mercede’s.
The snowflakes were taught a valuable lesson by “the community”.

It depends.

How many MBA's do they have.

Duh.
Seems they went to sleep in 1959 and woke up yesterday.

Lucky these rental companies are self insured, but the recklessness for the weed/cognac infused feral that steal them and drive like maniacs only cause individual insurance claims that jack up the rates for the ordinary law abiding taxpaying public.

What’s the deal...
Welcoming Sanctuary City set rules for these companies to include the underserved in order to do business here and are required to tolerate some loss. Set asides upwards to 25%, and they still make money off the borrowing, own nothing, socialistic single-use, lazy dimwits.
All part of the Democrats diabolical master plan.
Monday’s are going to be Soylent green days, hope they don’t short your kilo allotment.
And once that Green New Whatever takes root, it’s “Plankton and fish and sea greens and protein from the sea".

Gotta run, the old colonial cauliflowers rule time is up.

Remember, auto theft is not a problem in Illinois. That is why the disbanded all auto theft task forces so state government could use the auto theft fund for whatever they want.

Someone from Car2Go actually thought it was a good idea to put 75 Mercedes up for rent through a mobile app with no identification or payment verification in the city of Chicago? That is some funny shit - gotta love the snowflakes.

What would be wrong with Car2Gone renting out Sentra's or Rio’s, limit the accelerator to 40 mph and GPS disabling.
Heck a solid $5 USC deposit would keep them away.

Sportin’ crafty little cons, always conniving.
Making busy time between $15 hr. jobs.
Wait until they figure out how to jimmy the elevator controls or coin box at Carvana’s vending machine.
