Boo Hoo Hoo

  • (Virginia) Public defender’s offices have long struggled with high turnover. But lately, one time-consuming part of the job is driving lawyers out even faster.

Attorneys are quitting at least partly because they’re swamped by the amount of video footage they have to review from police body-worn cameras.

And in localities without public defender’s offices, court-appointed attorneys are struggling to maintain their own law practices and keep up with the body camera footage.

Police departments across Virginia have fitted officers with thousands of body cameras in the past few years, largely without considering the attorneys who are ethically bound to review the thousands of hours of video they produce. Both defense lawyers and prosecutors need to see if there’s anything in the footage that helps their cases, and prosecutors are legally required to turn over any evidence that’s favorable to the defense.
You made our job too hard! We were just supposed to Monday morning quarterback you into a quick settlement, not actually have to defend our clients based on facts recorded by you evil police!

Hah!

It should've happened like that here...

"B O R I N G! These Chicago Cops (the smart ones at least)
aren't getting themselves in trouble by engaging with the
community so they're turning in all this dead-assed video
footage of the steering wheel logo in their squads!
Can't we make them be proactive in order for this to be
worth our while?"

When dash cams were installed in suburban squads while Chicago was dragging its feet, municipality’s found and defense lawyers found that the in car cam in the greater majority of cases supported what the police testified to that occurred during the traffic stop. That in turn resulted in more cases won, but also dramatically reduced civil suits by defendants and their bottom feeding lawyers. Now that BWC footage has exponentially increased in footage to be viewed lawyers are crying. Figures.

Watching video sucks fucking ass.

Body Cam, POD, dash cam, 20 exterior mounted cameras, cta cameras, etc.....brutal

I would rather widen the gap of my two front teeth with a bent fork than watch endless hours of POD video

So happy to hear that those who demanded cameras now get to suffer along with me. Dumb asses

Typical Asshole reporter, asshole editor. Spin the words in a very deliberate manner. The way it is written makes it sound as if the Departments had a choice to begin with in this environment, and that the convenience of the Attorneys was actually a dimension in the decision process. When what they demand to have doesn't workout they way the planned, (and actually backfires directly on them)they just dirty it up so it doesn't look so bad for them.

If an Officer walked on water, they would lament the poor boat that was put out of a job.

The system has collapsed. The police are just trying to survive the tour. Society has determined that they require police to have a safe response with no immediate solutions other than providing a report and advising warrants. When the offender shows back up, the police chase will be terminated aftger the second moving violation.

Voilla.... bad guy does the crime and drives away in a city circling the drain.

BTW.......don't you dare forget that LGBTQIA+, BLM, CIAR, ACLU, NAACP, and LaRaza are always right. The police and Trump are the problem, not baby huey smokin' that loud.

Democrats, liberals, snowflakes, community activists and even a president started believe all their own lies about police gunning down innocent people , pulling innocent people fro cars and other racist lies . Now police videos show criminals threatening, disarming , punching , resisting arrest, failing to obey verbal commands .
The ten on stage are all for taking away police officers power , claim mass arrests of blacks . I think black, white ,Asian,Hispanic victims will disagree and vote for Donald Trump .
Racist behavior , disobedience to laws , traffic and criminal , getting arrested and playing race card .

Nov 14, 2017 · Police Body Cameras Can Threaten Civil Rights of Black and Brown People, New Report Says. The vast majority of the nation’s biggest police departments allow officers to watch footage from body cameras whenever they want, including before they write their incident reports or make statements, said the report, which was released Tuesday by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

Chalk this one up to: ...
>> The Law of unintended consequences.
>> Be careful what you wish for.
and last but not least...
>> Another 'problem' created by stoo-pid f--king democrats / leftists.

The last one might be the most important of all because I swear that every problem that we have in this country and have had for the last sixty years (at the least) can be traced back and/or linked to something some asshole democrat politician or leftist lawyer or judge had their dirty little hand in. (a)

Remember Brown Paper Grocery Bags? Leftist Eco-Nazis DEMANDED we switch to PLATIC to 'Saves The Trees'. Yeah, well someone forgot to tell the numbskull that TREES grow again, they're fucking Renewable. Plastic Bags not so much.

Remember when we had only One Telephone Company? Apparently 'Ma Bell' worked to goddamned smooth for some asshole in DC, so 'he' broke it up into 2,754 little phone companies. Whoever that jagoff was now seems to have a relative in government who's sights are on Amazon -- One-stop shopping for literally everything from vendors large & small apparently irritates the asshole.

Sorry, I digress. My point is, these whining lawyers can go to hell. They wanted hours & hours of video from police and now they've got it. Fuck 'em.

(a): This includes rulings by the Supreme Court and naturally the 535 assholes that make up the US Congress -- keep in mind that after WWII that democrats pretty much ruled congress uninterrupted.

I worked part time as video person in small suburban Pd. It got worse daily as everyone in the criminal justice system wanted squad video and video review from the various cameras around town. On a minor crime like graffiti you going to watch 8 hours worth of fixed camera video?
Can’t imagine what CPD video people have to deal with daily.

Yes, and now here in Chicago, it seems the film is being used to second guess the police on every street stop and claim that the officers should have seen something so they must be lying. It seems things are only getting worse with the leftist " progressives" and social justice warriors in charge. You can see where this has gotten law enforcement if you just look at Portland, Seattle, Baltimore and now Houston. Then lets not forget the former great city of New York.

AND white shirts??? they will get caught up again for the laziness when the get LAQUANED and find something strange on a video and nobody noticed till trial.

How about they just review the incident itself, rather than going back hours before and after the incident in order to see if the officer might have said something they can slant and use in court?
And yes, they can come up with a good estimate of the toilet paper you used, so beware.

@1225am

Amen brother. If you’ve ever been to court with these body cams (or in car) that have great footage undoubtedly showing the offender guilt, they just won’t use it in court. I had one on a gun case, in car camera, showed all the violations for the traffic stop. Defense attorney plays my video right up to the point of where he commits the violation and stops it, then asks if there was X violation. I said “yes” she responds “really? There was?” I said yes, if you continue the video all the violations happen on camera but you stopped it before it got to that point. So they all begged for cameras, now you go to court and they don’t even want to use the footage. So they make us wear it and cherry pick when to use it. I don’t get to cherry pick when to use my camera, they shouldn’t be allowed to cherry pick footage. If that’s the case just trash these fucking things because there’s no point to have them if the footage won’t be used in court.

As I can remember back in 2015 were protesters blocking streets yelling:

"body worn camera"
"when do we want them?"
"Now"

Not one single person complained about officer watching the videos, privacy, ect.

It is unfair to bring up these issues now. Face you have no privacy when dealing with the police, just like I am suppose to be running a two minute buffer in the bathroom.

I was told I have no right to privacy.

Splendidly done good sir!

May you continue to hit the good lick
until you're ready to pop smoke.

Get every nickel of your treasure you worked for away from
these hateful and evil Chicago m/fers who would love nothing
more than to keep you captive and claw some of your treasure
back from you just because you are/were a Policeman.

There was tongue-wagging by these wretches to "punish"
CPD retirees for selling, fleeing and taking their
treasure with them...

"Why y'all abandoning our wonderful city and refusing
to "share" by liquidating your assets/holdings and
unfairly taking your wealth with you? You Cops are
being selfish for doing that!"

Right on the heels of the nitwits demanding that
Policemen and other "middle class earners" be
good sports and stop leaving their property and
treasure to their children and give it to
"disadvantaged members of the community."

Chicago... The cautionary tale of when contributory
earners are surrounded and outnumbered by those who
feel the earners owe them something.

What an envious, evil, hateful,
immoral and vicious place this city is.

A salutatory measure of
Laird's Cask-Strength Apple Brandy
(Colonial America's first distilled spirit)
waved in your general direction good sir...

Step back and look at the Big Picture, from a Global perspective. There is no money n status quo, but 'Sweeping Changes' is very lucrative.

Enviornmental changes that target a certain group are designed to enrich another. Say you are a car manufacturer who comes up with a way to reduce emissions, but it adds cost to the car and is not legally mandated. What do you do? You get your lobyist some funds, get the EPA to enact requirements . Your competitors are not as ready as you are, lag costs customers.

Add the cost of cameras, batteries, data storage, replacements, etc.

Not to mention the time that is spent by investigators looking at video for everything. Seeing mostly nothing.
