I understand how most of us, myself included, and i got over 20, may have slowed down with stops but still respond to calls, trying to get the bad guy. Unfortunately, it seems like even that's over. The fix was in on this case from the get go. There was no way they were going to keep him on the job. He won the civil lawsuit and will win the appeal. Just be patient.

When I joined CPD in 1966, the rule was that a good policeman was never hungry, tired, cold, wet, or broke.
I was assigned as a crime historian, my job being to drive around and write a report when something bad happened to a citizen. The theory was, someday in the future, supercomputers will solve(or unfound)all those crimes and justice will be done.
Plenty of time off, counting furloughs, personal days, holidays, etc, and when feeling a little poorly, the medical. Twenty-six years of vaudeville, then a pension. Worked for me!

Not in every instance, but that's going to be the overall trajectory. I sure hope you are right because a group of officers were recently fired when they shouldn’t have been. That being said, unfortunately you are living in the past. Times have changed as seen in the police boards decisions and it has also changed regarding the courts returning officers to duty after being fired. With any luck it will scare away the bad guys and all ones has to do is a report and the Officer is safe for another day. Also, remember to observe ALL traffic laws and drive very safely when going to ones jobs even with lights and siren.

I think you have totally misunderstood the department, the supervisors and the boss. No I’m not a friend of Johnson but you have to understand it was not Johnson or the COD that did this. It was the police board. Johnson sent a letter to COPA in March 2018 saying Rialmo responded properly to the threat. He also dismissed the testimony of witnesses who said Rialmo was on the sidewalk and how many feet Rialmo was from LeGrier. He did not want him fired Because Johnson and COPA at odds the Police Board chose a member to decide to dismiss the case or go to the full board. After she sent the case to the full board they screwed him with the 7-0 decision
That’s how this miscarriage of justice happened.
But what will we do ? 24 years on this job and never do we show we are pissed ! Maybe do nothing for a week . Zero . Do something!,

Over the course of my time on CPD and working in the worst areas because I was a sergeant without any clout, I responded to countless calls on " mentals" and many others that turned out to be, I count my lucky stars that they all turned out OK with having to take a life. There were many that did end up almost causing a police officer to use deadly force. The police board was totally wrong in its judgement. I hope the courts overturn this unjust act. But, in the meantime, I would not blame any police officer for " slow rolling" to any such calls or to any call that is until the administration gets itself right. Isee a new superintendent coming soon, an outsider and a liberal outsider.
Any copper who does not become FETAL deserves whatever these ASSHOLES dish out!!

Yes to all calls activate your audio visual offender avoidance system and when you get close to the location oh about a block or two slow down and make sure the signal is heard. Usually they get hint and run away.

It’s not fair to responding officers and I do worry about how it affects the officers ability and willingness to engage in these situations.
That being said, the use of force guidelines need to be adjusted and officer training prioritized so that these situations are reduced and confidence in the correct use of force becomes less of an issue. This has been done in many cities all over the country, it’s time for the CPD leadership to stop reacting and to take a long hard look at what is causing the greatest conflict with the community.

I have to laugh. I came on the job 23 OCT 1995. When the monthly FOP mag came out everyone seemed to stay until freakin 70 years old (before the mandatory retirement age of 63). After that age of 63 kicked in so many stayed 40 years/age 63. Now I look at the "Honoring..Retirees" pages and so many are leaving at 20 years which was unheard of when I came on.

When I joined CPD in 1966, the rule was that a good policeman was never hungry, tired, cold, wet, or broke.
I was assigned as a crime historian, my job being to drive around and write a report when something bad happened to a citizen. The theory was, someday in the future, supercomputers will solve(or unfound)all those crimes and justice will be done.
Plenty of time off, counting furloughs, personal days, holidays, etc, and when feeling a little poorly, the medical. Twenty-six years of vaudeville, then a pension. Worked for me!

I came on in '86 and experienced the same thing, and felt the same way. I wish someone could get through to these new idiots they're hiring. The difference is, I paid attention to what they taught me....now these new idiot rangers think they know better. I thank God for all the 'old-timers' who taught me so much. And you're right about the Viet Nam vets. If you listened, they had very valuable lessons to teach about more than just the job. So thank you to all who taught me so many lessons when I came on the job.

As far as the board saying he should have shot from farther away, I am not a firearms expert but wouldn't a longer distance shot be more likely to miss and you know hit and innocent bystander?
