- Mayor Lori Lightfoot and top financial officials in her administration on Monday stood by their proposal to widen the criteria for issuing speeding tickets next year, saying they did so primarily as a public safety measure.
Lightfoot’s plan to close a $1.2 billion gap in the 2021 budget includes a $38.8 million hike in fines, fees and forfeitures over 2020, including by ticketing drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 6 miles per hour. The $35 citation, first reported by the Tribune, would be sent to drivers who are twice caught by cameras driving between 6 and 9 mph over the speed limit. The first infraction would incur a warning.
The mayor, who campaigned in part on ending the city’s reliance on ticketing to balance its finances, said during a press conference Monday the added fines are “about keeping communities safe” following a recent increase in “speeding-related accidents and deaths.”
What's the phrase? Oh yeah - "Won't somebody think of the children?!??!"
Even the Tribune calls bullshit on this one:
But a Tribune analysis found total crashes are down from the first nine months of 2019, when there were 88,757 compared with the same period in 2020, when there were 69,480.
And it’s not clear how many fatal crashes were caused by speeding, the Tribune reports.
But fines and property taxes? Raise them all.

Time for some truth serum here.
First, speeding is a problem -- a growing problem during Covid-19 where we are seeing a lot of excessive speeds (20, 30, 40 mph over the limit -- and higher). As people have become more responsible about drinking and driving impaired driving fatalities are down to 28%, less than half of what they once were. Excessive speed is 26%.
Up in cheese land, where traffic enforcement is known to be more strict, the phrase "nine you're fine, ten you're mine" is pretty good guidance. There are no speed camera traps. And while it would be absurd to say that money isn't raised from tickets it's unlawful to use enforcement as a cash cow. An investigation into a small town police department with a reputation for writing paper showed that out of more than 4500 tickets written only one was for below ten over.
What Mayor Lightfoot is advocating is beyond belief. She is openly admitting using traffic enforcement as a revenue source. As if that wasn't bad enough it's precisely one of the issues that's came out of Ferguson, Missouri where most of the St. Louis suburbs were found to be using tickets to support their municipal budgets. And who got a disproportionate share of those tickets? Blacks. How bad was it? Ferguson (not the worst St. Louis suburb) and Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin are similarly sized suburbs. The year Michael Brown was shot in Ferguson $2.3 million was raised from tickets (with police pressured to meet revenue targets) vs. $350,000 in Pleasant Prairie. The situation in Ferguson and other St. Louis suburbs was so bad that while the United States Department of Justice did not upset the determination that Brown's death was a justifiable homicide it did produce a scathing report on Mossouri's "cash register justice" that disportionately hit the poor and minorities.
And this is what Mayor Lightfoot is proposing for Shitcago. Plus it's another reason for people to avoid the city. Murders, carjacking and robberies skyrocketing and she's worried about grandma doing 36 in a 30. Bullshit.

I got a ticket on Ogden near Randolph at 940pm, contested by mail and gave the statute 7am-7pm park district thats on the books, they gave me a court date. I just paid the $100, easier than going to court.

According to our courts we must let out certain felons on bond or ehm if they can't afford a cash bond. It's cruel to lock people up because they are poor and can't afford bond for the crimes they have committed. Along that same line of thought is it cruel to slap a boot on someone's car because they have a couple of speeding or red light tickets that they have not paid. It's all about the money. When I bought my house in 1996 the sewer and water bill every 6 months was 78.00. It is now 603.00 every 6 months including garbage pick up fee. You don't even have to destroy them. A paint roller and some petroleum jelly will do a fine job of blurring any photos...and it's water-resistant.
Best part is, even if you get caught, it should fall under the CPD policy of not making CDTP reports for Halloween egg incidents-it washes off!
Those cameras run 24/7.

Here's an idea. If you are underprivileged, poor or whatever and you get a speeding ticket, 'work off the fine' picking up trash, volunteering or other labor needed, in THEIR community. My guess they'd pay the fine.
Know it would cost more, but it would be a deterrent to crying poor!

The ISP actually had a speed camera In a van on the Ryan in 2006 or so. The troopers struggled to review the violations as there were so many. The Speed reader thing burned out from overuse in the one van also. It was a joke. Not sure why it was discontinued. Politics is my guess....
