Scooter rider killed by....uh oh:
A Chicago police patrol vehicle crashed into a man riding an electric scooter in the Bridgeport neighborhood Thursday morning, killing the man, police said.
The incident took place at about 12:30 a.m. in the 3200-block of South Princeton Avenue.
Police said the vehicle was driving northbound when it crashed into the 39-year-old man driving the stand-up scooter. The Chicago Fire Department transported the man to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
The media dug up a witness who blamed the police:
- "There was a pretty solid dent in the front of the car," neighbor Chloe Jackson said. "I think it is just disappointing because it is not extremely surprising. We do see a lot of instances of CPD especially because we are pretty close to the station over here, of them speeding or turning on their lights to avoid stop signs or stoplights."
Yeah, and we also see a lot of scooter riders disobeying traffic laws twenty and thirty times a day around here. None of them wear safety equipment either, and certainly fewer at 12:30 AM.
The "solid dent" in the front of the squad car suggests the deceased was traveling perpendicular to the striking vehicle and the video from the scene makes it appear he was struck while emerging from behind a parked vehicle at the corner while traveling on the sidewalk.
But who knows? We'll see what the investigation reveals.
