A Tax too Far

  • CHICAGO – β€œTo the residents and businesses of Cook County, we have heard you loud and clear and so today I have filed an ordinance to repeal the Cook County Sweetened Beverage Tax,” said GOP Commissioner Sean Morrison at a press conference held Wednesday at the Cook County Building.

Indeed, a poll released Wednesday shows 87% of Cook County residents are upset about the new one cent per ounce sugary drink tax, making a 2 liter bottle of soda pop cost 68 cents more.

Joining Commissioner Morrison as co-sponsors of the repeal ordinance are Commissioner Richard Boykin (D-1), Commissioner John A. Fritchey (D-12), Commissioner Timothy O. Schneider (R-15), and Commissioner Jeffrey R. Tobolski (D-16).

There was equal bi-partisan support opposing this tax last year, but the tax passed by a single vote and that tie-breaking vote was cast by President Preckwinkle herself.
These five all voted against the tax to begin with, and they're extending a lifeline to the other eight assholes who supported this disaster of a tax - a tax that is opposed by 87% of the surveyed electorate.

Unfortunately, the next Cook County Board meeting is 13 September, meaning a full month minimum of the tax being collected from irate taxpayers. This month will show exactly how much Prickwrinkle isn't going to collect from the tax. We're betting that her estimates are going to be off by tens of millions for the month alone - upwards of $100 million a year.

The really bad news for Toni is she has now driven countless people to experiment with shopping in outlying counties and even other states....and people are realizing how much money they can save merely by driving 20 or 30 minutes from their comfort zones. And when they save on soda, they realize they save on gas taxes - ten and twenty cents a gallon. And they save on sales taxes. And they realize that they can strike a small blow for their own pocketbooks.

And a few hundred thousand "small blows" add up to tens of millions over the next 30 days....and even the Machine is starting to notice that this truly was a tax too far.

Been shopping in Dupage county now because of stupid snake Preckwinkle and the other fools. Saved a lot of money. People are sick of this crap! Tax tax tax! No more Starbucks or drinks from Dunkin Donuts either. They taxed them too. There's so much outrage over this.

Oh, it's way bigger than that.
The FED has gotten into it and says it was illegally implemented.
Illinois - the whole state - will lose a ton of food assistance $$$ if the tax isn't
repealed.
I'm still going to shop in the suburbs, though, even if they repeal it.
I get lots of free bags (which I re-use) and lots more choice in product, and lower gas taxes, and cleaner, friendlier stores.
You really blew it, Toni.

I drove to Munster Indiana to visit a friend and took the opportunity to fill up my gas tank and shop at the Jewel right on Ridge Rd, along with most of the people who reside on the south side of Chicago. The store manager was stocking shelves with soda(which were empty after the weekend) and said it has been great for his store because people are doing all of their shopping while they are there, which is exactly what I did and I saved quite a bit of money. I also picked up cigarettes for a couple of my neighbors while I was there, so not only did I not shop in Cook County, I didn't shop in Illinois.

They must have their "disposable income" so they can sit on their asses all day, buy their loosie Newports, $500 jackets from Madison and Pulaski, and get their nails did too, all courtesy of the beleaguered middle class.

Tax-and-spend. Tax-and-spend. Tax more-and-spend more. Lose revenues.

The formula doesn't work anymore.

Chicago, Cook County, and Illinois need to get some new leadership.

Poor leaders should step down - but they don't. Instead they push harder to get re-elected because where else can they go and make a lot of money for being incompetent?

When are YOU going to stop voting for them?

This effects more than just buying soda at the store. Why go to restraunts or movies in the county when you can avoid the tax in the burbs. If you go to the movies or drive through 1/3 is usually ice. I think this is a red herring, they will make the tax a flat 10% and all the sheep will be happy. Who cares if people are mad preckwinke will still win reelection ...heck Stroger won while he was on his deathbed in a coma while a ventilator kept him alive.

Want to save money? Get rid of the deputies in courts houses. . They are glorified security guards im shocked they have given that to that crooked security company that gets all the clout contracts. Pay off duty Cook County, Suburban, and Chicago police officers 35$ an hour to do it.

If just the big soda companies would have gotten involved problems could have been avoided. Take the similar soda tax in Philidelphia. A certain to win female presidential candidate supported the soda tax in Philidelphia. A non profit foundation bearing the candidates name d.b.a., The Clinton Foundation, had received 4.3 million dollars from Coca Cola. The female candidate never spoke of the tax after learning about the grnerous corporate tax-deductible donation. Coca Cola's tax problem got immediate action and was resolved. Even the former president representing the foundation praised the company during their namesake cola products 100th anniversary ceremony.

Coca Cola could have just hire locals. Senator Dick Durbin's wife Loretta and son Dick. Jr. are professional lobbyists for hire commanding corporate sized fees. I'm sure they know people in the Cook County democrat party to influence a favorable outcome for corporate America. And if anyone thinks this can present a conflict of interest, senator Durbin (D) himself is on the record saying his immediate lobbying efforts are ethical as long as it does not involve federal issues. Your right Senator, best damn state and local governments lobbyists can buy!

way more important than repealing a Perfectly Good Tax, especially one that the beloved Pet Group, da'Po don't have to pay, is passing a plethora of County Ordinances criminalizing any & all Cook County Residents from "shopping outside of Cook County" with maybe an Amazon/internet exception & also an exception for the beloved Pet Group.

Out of County shopping by Residents must be clamped down on & with heavy duty fines & penalties could be a really sweet little revenue generator too

Every vehicle with Illinois tags crossing the border from that g*damn Indiana needs to be stopped & throughly searched for contraband. Contraband redefined as "anything" which can be purchased at a store. Law needs written such that if the detained "smuggler" doesn't have a receipt from Cook County for the purchase of any "goods" in the vehicle, they are guilty of "ex-County shopping" & charged and heavily fined as such... not even an opened cola can, a bag of eaten burger wrappers, an opened deck of fags should be allowed in without a big fine unless the damned Smugglers have a receipt showing they were bought & taxed in the beloved County With a Heart, the County That Cares

The real costs are to businesses that are forced into collecting ill conceived taxes imposed by government. In this case, with so many variables of the product the subject of the taxation it is difficult to impose correctly. Because mistakes were made, a number of businesses are now subject to the costs of and potential high exposure to litigation. And this is the real issue for business to consider in the future. Do you want to have a branch or grow operations in a state such as Illinois, Cook County or Chicago where punitive tax policy is embraced and put into law by those local governments? But folks, this is the leadership that we have elected to represent us and we do not seem to be collectively considering the quality of the leaders we elect. Thus we have the likes of Toni, Rahm, Blago and all the others. Hopefully the 87% will change their voting habits and we can make necessary changes to leadership in this state across the board.

The Feds will not with hold that money because they say the tax is illegal. Their gripe is that people making purchases on welfare have been charged the tax and THAT'S because this program was rolled out so fast, store owners did not have time to set it up in their POS systems. The county told everyone that EVERY sale of a beverage that falls into this category MUST be taxed. If you are on welfare, their solution was to charge them the tax, put that tax revenue into a special fund and then reimburse the Feds out of that fund.

That's the key.
Find the outlying county you want to shop in then find the particular suburb within that county that has the least taxes.

I stated shopping outside the city / county when the city started taxing bottled water and the county raised their taxes.
Why wouldn't I? Tax rate in DuPage County is 7%
And if things change further in this shithole state, i'll start driving to Indiana.

Democrats are too stupid to see the writing on the wall; that people will flee to wherever they need to save money.

Remember, the fiscal mismanagement by the Democrats (city/county & state)
That is why we are taxed to death. They do not know how to manage the money they have.

I live in Nashville, TN. Tons of people between here and the KY border (39 miles away) routinely go grocery shopping in KY, where they don't tax food (one of the prices we pay for having no state income tax !!). One good trip a month, and combine it with a family outing, and you save a ton over a year's time, just making a drive you already would have made anyway. Wal-Mart and Kroger just over the KY border normally has far more TN tags in their lot than KY tags.

Be careful if you go to Elk Grove Village for pop. Only a small part of EGV is in DuPage rest in Cook county. I went to Jewel there to buy pop found out it was in Cook county. Was out there looking for a store in DuPage and they charged $1.98 for a 2 liter bottle of pop. Not good as my Jewel in Chicago was charging 79 cents for the same bottle of pop. 79 cents plus the 68 cents tax equals $1.47 a half dollar a bottle cheaper at Jewel in chicago
From Wikipedia below about the counties. Was surprised the cities adjoins Chicago seem to have part in Cook rest in Lake or Dupage

Elk Grove Village is a village located in northeastern Illinois adjacent to O'Hare International Airport and is a near northwest suburb, touching the city of Chicago. The village is home to Chicago's largest industrial park, and is home to one of the nations largest industrial parks. It is one of the Chicago metropolitan area's principal villages due to its large industrial park, located on the western border of the village. The village is located primarily in Cook County with a small portion in DuPage County

Repeal it all. I don't care anymore. I'm tired of it. As a Northwest Side of Chicago resident, I went to Wisconsin last week. Woodman's right off I-94 on Highway 50 in Kenosha. 1.5 hours of total driving. $150 in groceries for $4 in tax, $100 in alcohol for $5.50 in tax. Filled up the car at $.20 less per gallon, bought smokes for $4 less per pack, and got lunch. Additional bonus of all of this was the people are nicer and friendlier than Chicago, Cook County. All this to show my family how much money we will save, and friendlier people we will be surrounded by, upon my retirement and our move from this armpit I used to be proud to serve and protect. And the reason I don't care is fairly obvious. I will not shop in either Chicago, Cook County, or Illinois anymore.

Now:
According to the article and post, Peter Silvestri is not a co-sponsor of legislation to get rid of the tax.

Just got back from shopping live in Garfield ridge went to Costco on 22nd street in oakbrook area dupage county pleasure to shop there! Was at Jewel on archer in Garfield ridge yesterday store was like a ghost town, girl told me that sales are down 60% since this ridiculous tax and that is not only pop sales but entire store! Friend is a Pepsi driver told me they had meeting this morning and will be looking at layoffs starting in September if this tax persists! It is over toni you ruined more you and rahm have that in common complete idiots you guys should hook up, seeing how your husband divorced your crazy ass years ago,and since rahm likes wedding dresses why not dress for your wedding toni? rahm could wear the dress "If the dress fits you must acquit" and toni since you look like an ugly crazed man you can assume that role! Would be a "marriage maid in heaven/hell"

If Sessions ever straps the "testicular fortitude" on finally and sends in the feds and places you toni and rahm under arrest for the crimes you have committed from ignoring federal immigration laws costing us taxpayers multi-millions in lost federal assistance starting 01SEP17, the sooner arrests occur at city hall the county building the sooner we can "make Chicago and crook county great again"

The core of everything right is "law and order" and the elected here bastardize the police and the carnage continues and the blood flows everywhere due to elected and of course our terribly incompetent hack/clout filled joke of an exempt structure!

A tax too far indeed. Could this be the start of the "great white flight" out of Chicago and Cook County? I grew up in this city but feel more of an outcast as time goes by. Once you're outside the Cook County limits you get the stink of this city off you. People are friendlier, stuff is cheaper and I feel a greater sense of freedom. Over-priced sports venues, brainwashed hipsters, corruption, inflation, taxes and the need to pander to Dude Inc. have tarnished the appeal of Chicago. I'm seriously thinking of buying a house out in the boonies and just renting a studio apartment in the city to meet the residency requirement. This isn't an adolescent act of rebellion or fantasy but simply a matter of survival. Let's face it...things aren't getting better, only stays the same or worse. Can the FOP be legally punished for offering a class in how to curtail the residency requirements and new taxes I wonder? Our FOP president seems to be a master on this subject matter at least.

If a major class action has not yet been filed, it's gotta be in the works. Too many hungry lawyers. This is a classic example of one where the lawyers will get their cut, and the class members will get a $.50 coupon at the store of their choice. Meanwhile, Crook County has to defend it.

8/11/2017 08:41:00 AM

They round it off to 34 cents and charge you 68 cents pop tax when buying a 2 liter Remember 2 liter is twice as much as a 1 liter

Or the could add 33.814 multiply that by 2 which equals 67.628 and round that off to 68 cents

Screw those idiots. Don't buy one thing in Crook County that you don't absolutely have to. Let them drown in their own swill. Serves the mofo's right.

If you can afford it, do not hesitate. Heading out of town, seeing this stank-hole in my rear view mirror and getting to spend time in the boonies makes for pleasant rdo's, if they are not canceled, and allows for a replenishment of my peace of mind reserve. Even in mid-winter or facing the current home improvement task, it is still fun to go and be there. It is pleasant, quiet and void of Dude Incorporated. The time spent there recharges my batteries and makes me ready to take the street and idiot white-shirts all in stride. It is better than alcohol or prescribed psychotropic assistance and it is entirely legal. I'd give you a couple of locale suggestions, but I like the peace and quiet. Putting it on blast could cause too many people to disrupt the pleasant atmosphere. I looked for a long time, but finally found my piece of heaven. The search was well worth it. You will find one, but when you do, remember, do not tell a soul. Good luck to you.

I'm in Elgin every Sunday. Sometimes I shop at the Jewel there for convenience. My household goes through four or five 12-packs of soda (DIET soda) a week. That's about $7 additional tax on top of the already existing soda tax and Cook County and Chicago sales taxes. So now I'm not only buying my soda in Elgin, I'm also buying my weekly groceries there. Chicago is for shopping for last-stuff and perishables as long as this tax is in effect.

I can't remember the last time I filled up my car's gas tank in Chicago. Now I'll be traveling for soda as well.

When I'm at a restaurant in Cook County, I can order a Diet Coke and pay tax on it. Or I can order an iced tea and add the very same sweetener that's in Diet Coke and not pay tax.

So much for "it's for the children" and "it's to combat obesity."

Especially since Kool-Aid, which is nothing but sugar, water and food coloring, isn't taxed. So much for the fat kid defense, eh?

I drove to Munster Indiana to visit a friend and took the opportunity to fill up my gas tank and shop at the Jewel right on Ridge Rd, along with most of the people who reside on the south side of Chicago. The store manager was stocking shelves with soda(which were empty after the weekend) and said it has been great for his store because people are doing all of their shopping while they are there, which is exactly what I did and I saved quite a bit of money. I also picked up cigarettes for a couple of my neighbors while I was there, so not only did I not shop in Cook County, I didn't shop in Illinois.

Highland and Schererville IN are great and the housing market isn't too expensive. Way more bang for your buck. I personally like Dyer and they are going to be hiring next year.

Well I know there won't be a Republican mayor or board president any time soon, but right now I'll just settle for a few different democrats. These 2 are the worst ever. One has to pander to the criminal community and one chooses to. Sad.

pointed out that health is the flexibility of an organism to respond to.
