Another City Hall Rumor

In the same place that words like "bankruptcy" are being whispered, this is also being discussed openly:

  • Department proposes to City Hall that all command staff receive a $13,890 raise to create parity amongst the ranks. City Hall responds with the possibility of “non-paid furlough days” for all exempt ranks in 2026. Who would want to be a Commander!?!

How about cutting some costs instead? Maybe get rid of the gold braid pension since no one in a command spot actually passed a test to earn an inflated retirement benefit....and 95% never passed a promotional exam at any level.

This info is not a rumor but 100% true. This will definitely cause vacancies and retirements in the command staff level. I feel sorry for the young gold stars in their 40s who will lose out on salaries and benefits.

Way too many FTO’s. There’s almost 400, with a class slated for the fall.

FTO’s regularly go months without a PPO. That’s an easy place to start to slash the budget.

Who would want to be a Commander?

Ego. Anyone with an uncontrollable ego. That’s it.

Lt/Capt? Invest your overtime $ wisely and hour vs hour with any Commander / Deputy Chief, and in the end, you’ll be way ahead.

That’s why I love being an Lt! I just sit in the WOL office and giggle at any gold star.
A whole lot less headache and stress, anything past my 8.5 and I’m dropping a slip, so a lot more money too.

I’m going to be comfortable enough when I retire, and sick of this department, I won’t need to be some Chief, Assistant Director, or Boss anywhere in OEMC, Dept of Trans, or some suburban department.

I try to take care of my Watch as best as I can, try to give enough Time Due to my Officers and Sgts as possible. I also try to finesse the paperwork enough to keep them out of bad beefs and lawsuits.
Gold Stars can’t (or just won’t) do that most of the time.

This is part of the reason I'm so cynical. The corrupt, incompetent and clouted are rewarded. And this shit will never end, ever. Out of state, but watch the (drunken democrat) Assistant AG of Rhode Island getting arrested. She demands they turn off bodycams and says 12 times she is the AG. And then goes on about not being mirandized when they just asked her to leave. Didn't the City do Non Paid Furlough Days many many years ago. Don't recall which administration, it was that long ago but I'm pretty sure it was done across the board throughout the city of upper ranking city personnel. I believe it started as 2 days and then the next year it was 5 days. I could be wrong about the days.

Many units do not need a gold star to be in charge. Other cities use lessor ranks and do just fine.

It was hard to find a bad boss when I first came on the job. Now it's hard to find a good one. There was always some kind of shenanigans going on but the watches were very tight. Everyone hit the gin mill a couple nights a week after work including the bosses.

Get rid of the do nothing Tact Lt spots. They are mostly connected people too afraid to work the watch. They are hidden with almost zero responsibilities. Tact Lt is an admin spot that any capable Sgt could handle.

Bullshiii days "finessing" paperwork are long gone especially if on video where there are so many layers behind you the Lt that have and will review that video you wouldnt risk your spot or pension. Just approving some of these arrest reports will get you jammed up as an Lt.
Unless your an Lt in a cushion spot where you arent involved with any arrests made .. I call bs on your post.

You keep saying never passed a promotional test... 1st there isnt test to be a gold star, 2nd all other "ranks" you have to pass the test in order to get promoted to that rank, you juat dont have score well on it.. 3rd because taking and passing a promotional exam makes the "best" bosses right (insert sarcasm)
And 4th.. because we all know the departments testing process is so legit there isnt a way to cheat on it and it completely fair and transparent so everyone taking it is on a level playing field righttt.

I remember 50 plus years ago, our HRI in the Academy told us the best job on this Dept is LT. He was so right because you are too heavy for the light stuff and too light for the heavy stuff !!

Was this a post to just pat yourself on the back? I don’t get it. Many of us on the watches who are pushing our beat cars don’t like our Lts mainly because all they do is sit in the WC chair and watch tv and “giggle” and work half a tour.. all while lecturing us about how we can’t have too many people take off blah blah blah and then leave and work half the day. Trust me, in the eyes of the blue shirts, you’re not as cool as you think you are.

Just like if you didn't get vaccinated, you were suppose to go into a no pay status. That sure changed fast after news story was published. It changes to termination for disobedience. Iwas just going to go into a no pay status and treat it as a leave getting another job. I guess too many other emplyees had the same job.

Leave the Tact Lt’s alone. My OT pay says otherwise. Admin, phone calls, meetings, area mission meetings, more admin and A/A approvals. Don’t even start with trying to take back my department vehicle or tablet. How would I drive around doing errands and submit all those OT slips for “working” during my furloughs.

I was in a unit that was commanded by a Lt. We also did not have enough sargeants. Detectives and PO's filled in and things ran fine...
