Brandon Body #96
Still a chance to hit one-hundred:
A woman who is seven months pregnant struggled for at least three minutes to tell Chicago 911 operators she had been shot Friday night, according to records and radio transmissions reviewed by CWB Chicago. The emergency response was further delayed because nobody else reported the shooting and the local ShotSpotter network, which used to monitor the block for gunfire 24/7, was disconnected by Mayor Brandon Johnson in 2024.
[...] The block had been covered by the city’s ShotSpotter network for years before Johnson ended the city’s contract with the company after the Democratic National Convention in September 2024. ShotSpotter used acoustic sensors to pinpoint suspected gunfire and automatically alert police, allowing officers to respond even when no one called 911. Without that system, police rely on callers to report shootings and provide enough information for officers to locate victims.
Since the system was deactivated, CWB Chicago has identified 96 cases in which shooting victims appeared to experience lengthy waits for emergency assistance in areas previously covered by ShotSpotter. In some cases, nobody called 911 to report the gunfire. In others, callers provided too little information for officers to quickly find the victims.
C'mon hoodrats! You can do it!
