- As noted by numerous commentators, having the bosses work weekend evenings sure cleaned up a lot of crime, didn't it?
- One of the wildest theories we've seen on this site, noted by a number of commentators and conspiracy theorists, could Cease Fire be using "undue influence" to fan the flames of conflict in order to restore their $12 million budget? We doubted they had that much impact on stopping the violence before - we doubt they could muster any sort of support for increasing it.
- Does anyone think the lack of an SOS, Gangs South, West, North or Task Force type unit going out and sweeping the corners has anything to do with the recent up-tick in aggravated batteries? TRU is not that unit, never was that unit and in light of the downsizing coming up, won't be that unit.
- Event numbers are NOT police work, no matter what downtown says.

Cameras, plan and simple. There is no more pushing the law to the edge to be able to perform for you bosses and to do a good job.
Everyone is in fear of getting caught on camera. I am not talking about breaking the law and getting caught. I am talking about doing your job through the guidelines but a mistake or something that one person says is to much and another does not and you get fucked for.
The Acad has done wonders "training" us on the cameras. Two days of training= 1/4 time spent on how the camera actually works and 3/4ths telling everyone about not fucking up on the job anymore because you will be launched

Event Numbers will prevent several homicides this summer. So the more we generate the more lives will be saved. So keep pulling the numbers and maybe the mayor will let us avoid arbitration and give us the contract we deserve for pulling all those event numbers. And when I drink beer I drink 2Xs because I have my bump card!

Of course the lack of a gang unit is the reason. Why do you think they always bring it back under a different name and always bring back those same reliable people that have been doing that job for years.

We need a unit like SOS back. They did the dirty work. They would come in and round up the sh*t bags and take them off the street for the night.
The gangbangers might not have realized it, but i would bet those actions saved many of their lives. It might not have been totally "legal" but when it comes to saving lives and cleaning up communities sometimes these laws and rights need to be put on the back burner.
In our district now the gangs freely walk around sporting their colors and everything, and there's pretty much nothing we can do about it. It's sad.
The prob now is that nobody is going to put their job, paycheck, and freedom on the line to lock these assholes up. And why should we. The public gives us no support and the Supt is looking to fire anybody that doesn't have their shoe's shined. It's such a crazy time and unlike any other.
If you're on a tact/gang team, i know the bosses want you to go out and round up some of these bangers, but don't put your job on the line for a sgt/Lt that will surely walk away from you. Go back to the watch and write your parkers and case reports and hopefully you'll enjoy your pension some day.
These gangbangers have way to many rights. If they are in a certain gang territory, wearing the colors etc., and you know they are in a gang we should be able to stop them and go through. That should be the prob cause.
City has to seriously wise up and give us more leeway. We can't go out there and aggresively work with the fear of getting sued and/or fired for going through some gangbanger/hype. Until those changes are made, i won't put my ass/job on the line. Sorry city of chicago enjoy your soaring crime rate.

In the old days, Gang Specialists and the Homicide Detectives would know the main reasons for the violence, often knowing where and when it was going to happen before it did, and the players to be targeted.
There are maybe three or four left in the entire department with this capability, and for the most part, they're buried... Resurrect a couple of these old "warhorses" put out to pasture, and listen to them! They know what needs to be done, how to do it, and have always been innovative in their methods.

I have been on this job going on 18 years..I have worked in the worst neighborhoods in the city..I have worked in Gangs North AKA SOS and let me tell you something...all bullshit aside...I am well aware of the Jerome Finnigan disaster....there is a reason that happened plain and simple...I will tell it like it is...no bullshit...The reason Jerry Finnigan got so out of control was basically due to the fact that Matt Tobias was for a time Commander of SOS and put the screws to E Fred Bosse and John Baranowski...he forced them out..Matt wanted to have SWAT and Fred wanted to leave the HBT unit as it was...Matt got pissed at Fred for not "jumping" on the SWAT bandwagon saying that SOS could have gotten a ton of $$ for SWAT..Fred wanted his HBT team the way it was...SO......Matt Tobias forced Fred out as well as John Baranowski which allowed Jake Blake and Ricardo Mancha in as the W/C's...two people who Jerry worked with as patrolmen...they were all friends and Jerry could do no wrong...not only were they friends with Jerry...Tobias worked with them as patrolmen...so they were all in the same club!! Thus now Jerry Finnigan had free reign to do what he pleased!! If Fred Bosse and John Baranowski were there NONE of this would have happened...NO WAY!! All this is being said to let people know why this really happened....it had not been going on for 10 years etc...This bullshit started when Matt Tobias took over and ran Fred and the Baran out...plain and simple...ask anyone who worked in SOS...Supt. Weis...You need a unit like SOS back...not only did you have a ton of hard working police officers there ...you had a ton of experience in that unit..police officers who were told to go into an area and take care of business...not arrest "pissers / drinkers" but to seek out criminals and bring them to justice...You had the Best of the Best there plain and simple, Hands Down..The Best working police officers in the city.You want to stop crime or put a hurting on it? The problem is that there are cameras everywhere, morale is low, and folks don't feel like getting sued for making a pinch. Its just safer and easier to do the paper after pookie is shot than it is to stick your neck out on camera to try and solve a social problem only to get a cr#, and get sued.

No, when TRU was sweeping corners we called them pimps, etc for bs pinches, now people call for those very pinches, which is it? the problem is they don't want us to be the police, don't put hands on people, don't be proactive, it may end in a lawsuit. The only difference between the old Task Force, SOS etc and now is, the department had your back then, wanted you to be progressive, kick ass etc, now then don't, hence, lack of activity or proactive policeman... It is only going to get worse.

When is some smart reporter ( no- that's not an oxymoron ) going to subpoena the actual number of checks cut for duty available so they have an accurate count of how many police there are?
Then subtract about 10% for medical roll (legit or otherwise...) divide that number by 25 districts, three shifts and seven day off groups (i.e. 2/7 of the number will be on their regular day off at any time...) and subtract at least 2-4 on furlough....and you have a very, very, very, thin blue line...
And you wonder why the city's a mess?

Wonder when/if the Federal money obtained under the TARA grant for hire back will be used for its intended purpose? As I recall when Barb Barrett [TARA princess] got the grant through, that was a very specific provision for the allocation of this funding.

THank God, we don't need anymore H/I's, kidnappings, taking keys and going in houses on gun raids, a million beefs the district gets saddled with, TRU does a good job of what they do: street stops and traffic stops, you get what you get and thats it, no more working people for guns etc, those days are long gone, this is the department they wanted, now they can deal with it. Great job btw to TRU and our guys on Zone 12 last night, car chase, shotgun thrown from the vehicle and recovered, bad guys in custody, no officers hurt; nice to see people working together for a change.

its sad but we need that because many districts are in a RAP nightly and try doing a traffic stop, street stop, etc without a supervisor all over your ass saying "we are in a RAP we need to clear the board"
What did you guys come on the job for? Its everyone's job to help, not just the specialized units. It's sounds as you came on just for the money. I see squad cars drive past drug dealers, drive past dice games (that later turn into a shooting). Police say that job is petty. We're helping crime elevate. Turn a blind eye. Code out jobs we never went to. But yet we don't want that to happen in our neighborhood. Do your job!

What the department did was wrong, wrong, wrong. For years they skirted rules, devised shortcuts, stored away manpower as inside clout, shorted feet on the street, baited working police into producing numbers. All this so police could keep a lid on the most violent city in the world.
Individual rights not designed to prevent violence. They are designed to protect people from government. Law deals with violence AFTER it happens.
If inner city blacks and latinos want to kill their own, there is nothing the police can lawfully do to stop them.

What needs to be done is a change in Federal law which limits the amount you can sue a police department for and make it much tougher to award punitive damages. Fed's have immunity, at least give us some protection. You may not like it but that's what needs to be done..You know more the the bangers and the dealers, the end of us all is going to be because of the lawyers...They have such a twisted idea of what ethical behavior is, like letting a man sit for 26 years for a murder he didn't commit. Just talked to a friend of mine at TRU. They are moving 6 Sgts out to Area 2 Thursday, 90 P.O.'s to follow soon. Heres the problem, all the Sgts are from up north and will bid out the first chance they get. Do they really think the P.O.'s will stay, and if they do stay they wont do shit. When are they going to learn you cant force us to work, and that a lil bit of honey works better then vinegar
SCC, please start a thread on the re-naming of the gang crimes unit (should the brass finally see the light bulb over their thick skulls). I believe you came to this great department with the best of intentions, however you are faced with a major challenge; morale. The vast majority of us , PO’s, Sgt’s and even your command staff came on this job to be the police. We loved our fellow officers and this job. I have know hundreds of men who would break down walls to make arrests and put some puke in the penitentiary, chase armed felons down dark alleys and give their all for this profession.
However, this has changed, and not just because of a few whiners who are only looking for an excuse to justify the fact that they have been dogs their entire career, these are few and the workers are unfortunately silent. What distresses us that take pride in the star we wear, if the very real perception that the department is not with us. The days of supervisors covering our ass when we were doing the job that needed to be done, seem to be gone. Too many situations of good hardworking police being stripped, suspended and indicted have left us wondering why.
-Complaints against the police need to be screened, so may are bogus.
-Why obtain a Log # on all tazer events when the W/C’s TRR investigation is enough.
-We strip too many officers on an allegation...this is punishment of a man who has not been proven to do anything wrong.
-Revamp the behavioral intervention and personnel concerns program, they unjustly label our officers, W/C know who needs to be a concern; let them decide.
- The only numbers we should be concerns with are the crime stats, not how many contact cards we write. Bean counting has let to bs activity ( event # ..etc.) and offices full of people to count them and write reports upon report.
- full staff the districts, we have become a department of specialist units

We can turn this around, not just for the sake of you officers by for the good of this city, you know we have to live here too; send our kids to school here, shop here and raise our families here. If this city becomes unlivable for the men of this department, who will become your department of the future?

He does as much as possible to avoid jobs and arrests...only if he / she must in most parts of the city..SOS was a unit that annually beat any other unit/district in production and they only had 150 officers assigned when I was there....most districts have 250-350 officers assigned. SOS got results..plain and simple no denying that...The Jerry Finnigan scandal was a tradgedy and I hope he gets what is comming to him because he made all of us look bad...but in retrospect...SOS was full of the best street coppers you will see in a long time...hands down..Say what you want...there is no disputing the numbers..they speak for themself.You go and find me another Harold Bone at his age doing what he does every day...You go find me a Carl Stoll...or a Jimmy Sanchez....good luck!! They don't exist...We were a necessary entity that went out and did a necessary job and did it extremely well!

You're friggin' goofy! A beat copper that knows his/her beat is more productive than any SOS copper could ever be. A true beat copper knows the knuckleheads on his beat and what they're up to.
