How About Pay Your Own Way?

  • The last residents are moving out of the Cabrini-Green high-rise public housing development, but some say they are not ready to go.
  • Resident Kenneth Hammond said he is not satisfied with the condition of new housing being offered, noting the residences are still being rehabilitated.

  • Even so, the Chicago Housing Authority insists those residents will be better off living in mixed income communities throughout the city.

Hammond doesn’t agree after visiting one of those neighborhoods.

“These guys running through the alley. There were even some shots fired,” Hammond said. “And I went back to my family and said we need to re-think this out.”

Perhaps Kenneth doesn't remember the 1970's, but people were getting shot left and right all over Cabrini back then. Coppers, too. The reason it's so peaceful there now is the wholesale destruction of the 'jets.

Too bad, so sad if you don't like where they're moving you, but you're always welcome to, oh, we don't know, get a job and pay your own way so as to stop being wholly reliant on the government for everything. But until that time, you go where the landlord tells you to go.

You don't know what fun you missed if you didn't work 18 during the 1970's. Cabrini was a laugh a minute. Shot fired at the police every night. Gasoline poured on an elevator when you decided to take it. (Yes once in a while we were just too tired to take the stairs.) Bottles of urine flying out of the windows. Dead bodies almost every day. Guns!!! Guns!!!Guns!!! of all types. Ah yes, "Good Times" for all.....

Retirement is wonderful....

SCC,

Could not agree with you more. Someone who is on the dole stating, "I do not like it". Tough shit!

Get a job and do it on your own. I and my wife work hard everyday, just to stay in our own place.

I will not go into the tangent of those that are saying: " We bought our house for xxxx, and now that it is not worth yyyy, give me a break on it.

Make a decision and live with the consequences. How many people would be giving up their place if the market was still good?

I never did like the living conditions in Cabrini either.

That's why I have a job and with the money that I earn at that job I saved up a down payment and bought a house.

Now I make house payments called a "mortgage." No more car payments, that is paid off. I do buy groceries. Those are bags filled with stuff called "food."

In those "food" bags are no flamin' hot cheetos or orange soda or grape soda masquerading as staples of a reasonably balanced diet.

And no crack, that is a firm rule, none of that. Same with KFC and Popeyes. None.

Seems to be working. House is a few years away from being paid off, son is out on his own, he doesn't use dope and at age 33 has no rap sheet.

So I'd say it was a good decision not to go on the 'guvment dole and take that cheap/free apartment over in Cabrini way back when.

It is amazing what one can do with some simple things like a paycheck and a job.

TWO words. Welfare reform. No more lifetime welfare, no more welfare for the endless generations of leeches. It's simple you get 3 years of welfare, 3 years to get a job, after that you are done. If you get convicted of a felony, you are done getting welfare. If you are on welfare you can't get cable or satelite dishes or cars or rims for those cars. If you are on welfare you can't have children until you get off welfare so you can support and care for your kids. And yeah, you are supposed to take car of you kids. Useless parasites.

Work? You're kidding, right? Get the f*ck outta here! Oh, but before you leave, can you give me my free Obama phone so I can feel as worthwhile as all you taxpayin folks in the nice hoods? Besides, I'm outta rocks and I need to call my dealer to run by with a new supply for me to sell.

I worked at Cabrini is the late 90's and it amazed me how these SUBSIDIZED RENTERS seemed to think that these were their homes, not like it was their apartment, but like they actually owned them. They'd scream and holler about things they didn't like and we'd tell them, look, you pay maybe $90 per month for an apartment in a gold cost high-rise, you have 3, 4 or even 5 bedrooms in this apartment. If you had a job, your rent would be at least 10 or 15 times what you pay. You get free electricity (nobody paid the electric bill back then) and free heat and some of these fools owed several thousand dollars in back rent and were pissed off that CHA had the unmitigated gall to evict them! How in the hell do you get several thousand dollars in arrears when the rent is $90 per month?

Very unrealistic... besides, as my social worker ex-wife insisted, cutting off the money will only hurt the babies who have no say so whatsoever about having been brought into this dilemma. If you're going to take away the $$$, you'll have to take away the kids as well, and have the government come up with a plan for THAT. And we all know how good the government is at stuff. They're the ones that got us into this mess to begin with.

As my old partner used to say. We can solve the whole problem easily. All we need to do is give them all a free fish bowl full of guppies and teach them to eat their young!

Besides some of the other reform items already mentioned:

Random drug tests. You fail, NO MORE CHECKS. No more access to any public aid of any kind.

You need to take a drug test for applying to just about any job today - you can take a drug test to get "free benefits".

Food stamps for food only - anyone exchanging them for 50 CENTS on the dollar for liquor or anything else - both the store owner AND the person trying to sell off the food stamps - BANNED FOR LIFE on the program.

Let's start putting some restrictions on this "free money and benefits". Funny how all the politicians are pretty quiet on this.

It's too late, the damage is done. He (Daley) has spread the Cabrini Cancer throughout this City and surrounding suburbs where it's growing and entrenching itself into previously untainted, working class neighborhoods.

Protect your homes, educate your neighbors - go home safe and get the FUCK outta this Shit City before you become another statistic.

As a public employee I have watched-helpless as the media has kowtowed to the agenda of big business, and vilified us for pensions. Because of this, the public is increasingly turning against us ...even friends make us the bad guy, saying ...”we can’t afford pensions anymore or I don’t have a pension, so you shouldn’t either”.
I wonder when this sentiment will ever turn on these welfare people who generation after generation just take, no furlough days for them, no belt tightening. There is no recession in the ghetto. What a fucked up city, burying 2 police officers who gave their life and contributed to society yet our profession is constantly under the radar of an unfriendly media for being CPD and expecting a pension, while these welfare fucks skate through life untouched. Really messed up.

As pointed out by quite a few posters, welfare was meant to be a helping hand not a life choice. I have seen a few people use it for a leg up and go on to credible lives outside the projects. But I have seen far too many not do anything to get out of them. Sooner or later the feds are going to have to put sensible limits on how long we help them.

Let us also never forget those in blue who were lost while working in the projects. What little experience I have working in public housing was at the Dearborn Homes in 021 prior to them being rehabbed. I can only imagine what the coppers before me dealt with each tour when those buildings were at max capacity. It would have been my honor to work, learn, and laugh with you guys then, but it was well before my time. Again, the best I can do now is to say THANK YOU.

Most if not all of those "bugs" were bred in the "Jets".
So they think that this is the way life is. They are ignorant to the fact that the rest of society takes pride in self worth. Those bugs will always be a drain on the economy. They need to be re-taught. They need to learn how to go out and earn a real education, graduate, get a job and become a proud individual. Stop blaming everyone else for their placement in life. The only way for the bugs to learn is to cut them off from the welfare "teet". Reality is a good thing. To all of the Libtards, Go F*** yourselves, you've caused this.

Talk about pay your own way. Read this about your tax money:

November 30, 2010
(AP) The House on Tuesday passed landmark legislation to pay for some $4.6 billion in settlements with American Indians and black farmers who say they faced discrimination and mistreatment from the government.

Lawmakers voted 256-152 to send the measure to President Barack Obama, whose administration brokered the settlements over the past year.

The package would award some $3.4 billion to American Indians over claims they were cheated out of royalties overseen by the Interior Department for resources like oil, gas and timber. Another $1.2 billion would go to African-Americans who claim they were unfairly denied loans and other assistance from the Agriculture Department.

Hows this for a novel idea. The CHA & HUD buy a MILLION acres in lets say Oklahoma or Texas. Build a hundred thousand or so homes.

Then move those who refuse to get jobs or be responsible productive members of society to that location.

I'd personally be willing to stipulate all those residing there would cast votes to the Democratic party during elections.

I would guess Cook county residents would makethe population there 250,000 easily.

Street naming ideas? Jackson Way, Durbin Blvd or FDR place. Name the new country Kingdon of Daley? Haiti 2.

This new country would be just like any other 3rd world country- no huricanes just the occasional tornado to help control the population.

From 2002-2007 during the time Stateway Gardens and those other projects on State Street (Southside) were being torn down, the City sprinkled these people in decent neighborhoods and communities. After working 2nd watch and driving home, I turned the corner and found to my amazement, 2 doors to the south of my house, these people put their daily wash over the front bannister to dry. Then during the course of the week, they put a 27" tv on an old card table and placed it on the front LAWN. Then the Police had the house surrounded because they were involved with Cab Drivers robberies by calling from their house.

These people should not be allowed into decent areas until they are taught and trained to act like decent people and CHA to follow up on these people.

Eventually, they were asked to move. But another set of these animals moved in. Again there were problems with cooking on the front lawn. All these homes has backyards, but they don't use it. The backyards is used for garbage. They throw their garbage around the house including the backyard. They put the city garbage can under the kitchen window so they dont have to buy an indoor trash can.

The problems were huge and I made it out just in time. I retired and moved the hell away from Chicago. It can't get any better.
Again, this was your Mayor's plan - to destroy decent neighborhoods and wipe out certain areas for progress.

There are multiple generations on welfare. No one should be living 30 f*ckin years in public housing and food stamps. They have to start decreasing and eliminating benefits altogether for this negative behavior. It is not normal in today's society. People scream about jobs, well there are jobs out there, entry-level jobs, that no one wants because of the min wage, it's too f*ckin easy to sit around watching cable tv and do nothing. The only ones grabbing them are the illegals, and don't get me on that subject.

It gets better.

There was actually once a program in which they would have stopped pretending that these people were paying "rent," and started pretending that it was a "mortgage payment" instead!

At the end of an apropriate period, they would have been handed a deed to the unit -- AND ALL THE RESPONSIBILITY THAT WENT WITH ITS UPKEEP.

There was a howl that rent the heavens, led of course by the good Rev. Jesse Jackson.

They don't want to own it -- they just want to act like they do.

This business of moving them into "mixed-income" buildings where they will be shoved in next to Todd and Heidi Goldteeth's $450,000 lux-you-ree u-nit is a real scream. Finally the Democrats will get to live with the results of their "social engineering."
