Off Duty Rescue

  • Two Good Samaritans came to the rescue of a teenage driver who had lost control of his vehicle and crashed on Lake Shore Drive Saturday morning.

The 17-year-old boy was traveling southbound on 2100 block of south Lake Shore Drive at about 10:15 a.m. when his vehicle hit a tree and caught fire, police said.

The teen was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in guarded condition with a head injury and leg lacerations, police said.

CBS 2 [...] reports two men got the teenager out of Saturn SUV moments before it exploded.

“He was unresponsive when we pulled him out the car. The fire and the smoke had gotten to him. It got to us, pulling him out,” said John Poulos, the off-duty police officer.
The ended up charging the kid with a number of offenses, but that doesn't take away from the actions of the off duty's (or the citizens) who risked serious injury to save someone from stupid choices. Good job.

He's seventeen. Stupid choice, yes. But everybody who stopped and helped save him gave him another sixty or seventy years to live, and to learn to make better choices.

His dad sounded so grateful and happy and relieved, it had to make everyone involved feel good.

That is cold and cruel, to charge someone who has been hurt that badly. It seems that his injuries should be enough punishment.

If you watch the video the kid has a big smirk/smile on his face as they are taking him out of car and giving him all that attention.

Think of how much more difficult it is today for a kid to learn how to drive. Although cars are safer, so much more traffic, throw in higher speeds, cellphone and other distractions, not to mention city driving is just damn stressful. Is 16 really the right age to get a license any more? Maybe it should be 18.

Hopefully the car will be okay.

The P.o stopped an in progress burglary last year while off duty and after an all out fight with the offender, had to discharge his weapon. Offender was fatally wounded. By all accounts, the P.o is a great cop. Nobody seems to have anything but great things to say about him. Don't know how much time he has on, but seems to me that this is the kind of P.o that should be wearing a white shirt and taking a leadership role in our department.

What are you, twelve years old?

On the bright side, 17 is a pretty good age to get a wake-up call like this. Driving impaired can cancel your 18th birthday and all the others forever.

Great job on the part of the officer, the fireman, and the citizens in responding when needed.

I think you need to be charged! It's called doing your damn job...
Hopefully our feeble court system will get the kid into a treatment program he obviously needs.

Group of guys n gals? As opposed to what? A group of trees and flowers?

Shut up geek. You don't know him but you know he was in an off duty shooting two years ago.....ok.
Just save it nerd. There is about 1000 other guys who have been in shootings were the offender was armed in front of him.

It should be noted, when the car started on fire it was the two civil servants (off duty fire & cop) who got into the car to get the victim out safely. The news crew & everybody else moved back, out of harms way and watched until those souls freed that boy. Great job.

Hate to be a geek about it, but would you proofread your post before submitting it. Learn the difference between were and where. Also, perhaps you're right and there are 1000 other guys that have been in life and death shootings. Are you saying that they don't deserve to be a Sgt on this job??

You got me!!!

Why don't you learn to comprehend what is written if you're going to be a blog nerd. What I said was there was a 1000 guys who have been in shootings with armed offenders.

And no, being in a shooting doesn't mean you deserve to be a sergeant, and if it did he'd have to get in line. If you had some time on the job you would know that getting in a shooting usually doesn't do shit for you. You get some awards, you might get on the tact team if you want it, but that's it. Unless you got a china man that's all your getting.

I think he's probably got a china man, and he might get a merit promotion, but lets not be silly and thinks its because deserves it for popping someone.

Maybe if the biggest decision that you've ever made on this job wasn't deciding where to eat lunch, you would understand my original comment. I can't figure out why you're so defensive and argumentative, my belief is that if any P.o was in a fight for their lives and they shot and killed somebody on this job, then they should be considered for Sgt. Why are you so against my idea?
