How Bad Was the Soda Tax?

We've been hoping someone would run the numbers. The Daily Herald finally did:
  • Cook County's short-lived penny-per-ounce tax on sweetened beverages not only failed to bring in as much revenue as projected, but it might also have cost the county millions in sales tax revenue as consumers crossed county and state lines to buy their groceries.

In a revenue report released ahead of today's county board meeting, receipts from the first three months of the ill-fated tax show it generated $46.4 million. That's less than the $55 million the tax initially was expected to raise during those three months, though projections later were revised to $49.8 million.

Meanwhile, the county's home-rule sales tax revenue was off by $12 million for the year, the revenue report shows. Cook County Board Commissioner John Daley attributed that to consumers angry about the sweetened beverage tax shopping elsewhere.

"I've never heard so much animosity to a tax than this," Daley said. "People were telling me they'd go to Indiana to buy soda, and they weren't just buying their sodas there, but all their other groceries, too."
The most telling number that drove the panicked Board members to repeal?
  • Sweetened beverage tax revenue shrank each month of its existence, according to finance bureau records. The county received $16.6 million in August, $15.3 million in September and $14.4 million in October. The decline in tax revenue from August to September is the equivalent of nearly 2 million fewer 2-liter bottles of soda being sold.
The numbers were dropping every month as people realized how easy it was to shop outside of Cook County, and not just for soda - groceries and gas, too. We're still doing it. Score one for the citizens.

Politicians in this state are damn fools. Lower the sales tax and more money will come in, simple as that. Trace this post if you want, but I do not smoke. A few years back I travelled for work. I called my brother from another state and noticed that the price for a carton of smokes was like 2/3 the price in Chicago. He started screaming on the phone to bring back as many as I could carry. Insane. The politicians here have basically created a black market due to insane taxes. And please include the unfair property taxes. How many politicians are now millionaires due to ensuring the corporations get tax breaks but it has to get passed down to us?

Of course he is not going to challenge them, these are the people that donated to his and the other elected campaign and back pockets! While on vacation I had the opportunity to talk with some former residents of Peoria, Il. They now live in Tennessee. Property taxes went from $3500 to $200 a year. 3 br home, 2 acres of land south of Nashville. Their talked about the state sales tax in TN. It's like 9.5% which is a lot but everybody pays it so the tax burden is spread out among everyone not just property owners. Everybody is putting money in the pot and paying for the services of govt. If you have a large income and spend, spend, spend you pay lots of sales taxes. If you have a moderate income you spend less etc, you get the picture. The key is EVERYBODY pays. Maybe Illinois pols should look at this example and reduce property taxes and start getting everyone to help pay the bills. Ok I'm a realist and know a democrat in Illinois will never make their voter base pay for anything, but it's a thought and makes sense.

Pull out your calculators and do the math.

So Preckwinkle led a crusade to open the doors of the county jail and let thousands of detainees back out on the street. A recent article pointed out that the average daily population of Cook County Jail is below 6000 down from more than 10000 just a few years ago. If, as she claims, the daily cost of detention of someone in the jail is $125, that means that the cost of housing people at the jail went from $1,250,000 per day to $750,000 per day which should equal a daily savings of $500,000 which is $3,500,000 per week, $14,875,000 per month and $178,500,000 per year. What did she do with that money? With that kind of savings, why would any new tax ever be considered? Something is not right here. Why isn't the media asking her where the money is?

The residents of Cook County are being forced to contend with skyrocketing crime in the areas of armed robbery, strong armed robbery, car jacking and the like which could very well be due to more criminals being out on the streets but we don't get the benefit of this savings? Are you kidding me?

Hey alderman the game is played and you're not the game so you cannot play him you're a liar you're not for the people that pay your salary maybe you need to move out of the country and support people that you like no wonder why this city state and county is going to shit! Alderman you let the broken down the hard-working retired Chicago police officers have their healthcare ripped away viciously and ruthlessly by the mayor and you didn't say anything about it then you smiled as the mayor gave millions of dollars of taxpayers money away for the illegal criminals. The federal authorities will be here soon can promise you that hope you get a good seat With all the rest of the elected liars that I've been wasting billions of taxpayers money and violating federal immigration laws and other federal laws imprisonment would be the best thing to happen for all of you that would make Chicago great again!

It is time for government structural reforms, not just more taxes. JB is running for governor and is calling for a " graduated income tax" so the " wealthy can pay their fair share". But, if you look into the past democratic proposals for such a state income tax, it calls for taxing pensions and social security. That is really want the liberals want. And, so does the teacher's unions as they have openly called for such a state tax to fund their pensions and raises. So the democratic mantra is now " dig deeper taxpayers, no reforms for you". The same goes for Cook County government which is a haven for patronage, despite Shakman, featherbeding and jobs that are not a core part of government. You can only look to the the operations of Dorthy Brown and Berrios, two of the most wasteful government offices in any government. They exist not for the benefit of the taxpayers but for the benefit of the political class

The purpose of the tax was to save lives, reduce obesity, and
decrease diabetes, they were successful in saving all the lives that
elimination of Obamacare was supposed to kill. Unless of course, the purpose
was to raise tax revenue? But the Cook County Board would never

OT: Amazon Makes A Short List. Chicago Is Still In The Hunt.

It Seems The Choices Are All Bastions Of The Democrats, But Miami, Florida.

It is no wonder considering the richest man in the world, who happens to be a Democrat, made the choices.

The cities that made the cut are listed in alphabetical order.

List of 20 finalists out of a total of 238 original applicants with the Mayors of same:

Atlanta, GA (Non-Partisan Election, But Democrat Aligned-Keisha Lance-Bottoms)
Austin, TX (Democrat-Steve Adler)
Boston, MA (Democrat-Marty Walsh)
Chicago, IL (Democrat-9.5)
Columbus, OH (Non-Partisan Election, But Democrat Aligned-Andrew Ginther)
Dallas, TX (Democrat-Mike Rawlings)
Denver, CO (Non-Partisan Election, But Democrat Aligned-Michael Hancock)
Indianapolis, IN (Democrat-Joe Hogsett)
Los Angeles, CA (Democrat-Eric Garcetti)
Miami, FL (Non-Partisan Election, But Republican Aligned-Francis X. Suarez)
Montgomery County, MD (Democrat_Government Executive Isiah Leggett)
Metro Nashville, TN (Democrat-Megan Barry)
Newark, NJ (Democrat-Ras Baraka)
New York City, NY (Democrat-Bill de Blasio)
Northern Virginia, VA (Predominantly Democrat-AKA: NOVA. Several Counties & Cities)
Philadelphia, PA (Democrat-Jim Kenney)
Pittsburgh, PA (Democrat-Bill Peduto)
Raleigh, NC (Unaffiliated, But Backed By The Democratic Party-Nancy McFarlane)
Toronto, ON (Progressive Conservatives Of Ontario [AKA:Democrat]-John Tory)
Washington D.C. (Democrat-Muriel Bowser)

Amazon says it expects to make a final decision about which gets the nod sometime in 2018, so by the end of this year. It also clarified in its release that this will definitely be a true second HQ, rather than simply a sizeable satellite office, and will include $5 billion in investment from Amazon, with the potential to support as many as 50,000 "high-paying" jobs.

Toronto is the lone city to make the top 20 outside of the U.S., despite original applicants from the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

(OT) California off the cliff:

California AG: Employers who Cooperate With Federal Immigration Raids Will be Prosecuted

https://ntknetwork.com/california-ag-employers-who-cooperate-with-federal-immigration-raids-will-be-prosecuted/

Thought federal law was ultimate law so when come here to lock up elected do we help? Do we risk obstruction charges for not helping?

On another note lying democrats like dickey durbin say there are about 600,000 illegal dreamers here but wait:

There are 3.6M 'DREAMers' — a number far greater than commonly known

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2018/01/18/there-3-5-m-dreamers-and-most-may-face-nightmare/1042134001/

Can you imagine the billions we are spending on them? Free college for example as we struggle and weigh our children citizens down with loans! Now rahm and his appointed friend Anna city clerk will cost us millions giving them free identification cards that give them discounts, you can even choose what sex you want to be! Personally I will be going "deep state" off the grid getting a card gee what name will I use? I'm a male so will be female designated on bullshit card and will be hmm Raquel Welch!

Hey George, if I live in your ward but I have blond hair and blue eyes, will you still give me one of your bilingual "no dog shit" signs to put in my front yard? You know, the one with the abstract drawing of a dog about to take a dump? George, the sign has one side in English and one side in Spanish, what about the many law-abiding and neighborly Chinese families in your ward, why isn't the sign in Chinese as well? George, is it because Chinese typically don't have blond hair and blue eyes? Or is it that dogs owned by Chinese families aren't usually the problem? George, who got the contract to make the "no dog shit" signs? George, what about bilingual signs telling people not to dump their greasy carry-out garbage wherever they happen to park their car? Maybe there should be a special city tax on certain brands of beer based on how often empty cans and bottles of those brands are left as garbage on residential streets?

No but the foundation would have ended up making a lot more money. I imagine Hillary could have made a chunk too. Give it a few years for the representatives of the serfs to do their thing and everyone would have been happy. Everyone has their price in Crook County.

While on vacation I had the opportunity to talk with some former residents of Peoria, Il. They now live in Tennessee. Property taxes went from $3500 to $200 a year. 3 br home, 2 acres of land south of Nashville.

Hope you meant $2,000 otherwise they're living in a refrigerator box. Of course there are gullible people everywhere.

Wisconsin's Walker proposes work, photo ID requirements in welfare overhaul plan

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/midwest/ct-wisconsin-walker-welfare-overhaul-20180118-story.html

If your on welfare you have to work maybe the 50 rahm durbin and the rest will finally stop violating federal laws protecting illegals criminals
Next before you go to prison as the Feds come soon maybe due like Wisconsin make the leeches all work or no taxpayers money with the billions saved you could restore police retired health care that you took away viciously and then fully fund police pension before prison sentences start that's winning!

Moprah's play cousin wrote some nonsence yesterday in the Scum Times saying that the tax should have remained in effect. Something about pop is responsible for people of color becoming diabetical.
1/18/2018 05:55:00 AM

Yup.
It jumps off the shelves and forces you to buy it.
Then it pops its own top and forces you to drink it.
1/18/2018 02:48:00 PM

...Ask 'em if they drink enough water...

"Huh?
I don't like how watuh don't taste like nothin!"

And you see every other kid drinking "juice,"
eating flamin' hots and sucking on a hot pickle
in a plastic sleeve while OTW to school in the
morning.

But yeah... They howl for more of YOUR
Tax Dollars to fund baby-sitting, uhhh, school
and they also howl for a "Seat At The Table"
which is nothing more than an ongoing attempt
to keep YOU hostage so they can plunder your
treasure at will.

They KNOW they're a piss-poor return
on the taxpayer dollar but so what?

It's THEIR TURN now and they aim to have
their REVENGE against YOU for having shit
THEY DON'T.

"Y'all got jobs an' pensions an' houses an' shit.
Why can't WE have what YOU got?"

Any plausible explanation is derided as culturally
insensitive and racist so give them MORE MONEY and
they'll be quiet and hold still until the next ginned-up
outrage/cause without a pause flairs up.

"The problem is I have to pay for your health care costs. Unfortunately, unhealthy diets costs others money."

Even with the tax you'd still be paying for that. Do you really think the tax was going to subsidize health care costs, or actually make make people change their habits?

Able to charge those who eat unhealthy more for premiums.

The tax was also on artificially-sweetened drinks. Precwinkle even admitted late in the game that it wasn't so much for the health "benefits" of such a tax, but as a money raiser.

Fuck her. Fuck them.

Plenty of people of color are on welfare and don’t have to pay the soda tax. So how does the soda tax help them changed their lifestyle if they don’t pay the tax?
