Remember, these guys and gals are responding to calls for service, many times for people (and folks) in actual distress. And this is the welcome they're getting from the hood rats:
- A man has been charged with robbing an on-duty Chicago Fire
Department ambulance crew on Monday morning. Jaylin Brewster, 20, will
appear in court on Christmas Eve to face charges of robbery and
aggravated battery.
Paramedics assigned to Ambulance 24 went to the 7900 block of South Throop around 1:45 a.m. to handle a call about a person with respiratory problems. Police said a man approached the ambulance team, implied he had a gun, and took their property.
After the robbery, the medics, ages 39 and 41, overpowered Brewster and held him until police arrived, according to CPD. Brewster is also accused of battering the cops who took him into custody.
France already has "no go" zones for cops and firefighters. Large parts of Malmo, Sweden are the same way due to almost 150 grenade attacks in the past year. Pretty soon, it's going to be standard practice across the city (and not just the $hithole neighborhoods) to dispatch scarce police resources to protect CFD paramedics and fire equipment. We used to roll by their calls anyway, but it'll be mandatory soon.
Perhaps there need to be an "ambulance desert" similar to "food and retail establishment deserts" in certain neighborhoods?

Good for the medics for fighting back although I can bet they will get suspended and eat 20 days for it.
CFD is rapidly becoming one of the more WOKE depts these days and you can bet every hair on your a$$es that the heritage of both medics will be a factor for laying their hands on a former honor student who was about to turn his life around.
CPD goes on probably 40% of CFD’s runs now as it is with a dwindling manpower issue on CPD and increase for EMS and decrease in paramedic applicants something has to give the city can’t keep kicking the can down the road it can’t sustain any longer. On December 24th I believe 12-15 companies were downgraded from ALS and about 10 on the 25th were also. Enough is enough the supply cannot meet the demand anymore how come Chinatown only calls CFD a few times a month at the most? Or the Jewish areas of Indian areas. What are they doing differently?
When letter carriers get robbed the Postmaster can cut off service and force everyone in the area to come into the Post Office to pick up their mail... usually the offenders are turned in, locally tuned up, or both to get service restored.
Seems like the Fire Chief should do the same.
This individual was convicted of robbery and agg batt to a peace officer in January and received 2 years of mental health probation. Another crimesha catch and release.
suburban PO here, that’s been a standard practice out here for quite some time now. We ride with the ambulance on every call from old people who can’t get up, to people stroking out and everything in between. I’d bet money it’s only a matter of time before you guys do the same.

You know that thing about life imitating art? Well, long ago in another lifetime I used to play this really cool RPG called Cyberpunk. We would sit around and role-play characters confronting the darkness of the year 2013 (the premise of the game), a world in which the difference between the wealthy and the not-so-much were stark and unbridgeable, and where random violence of an extreme sort could occur with a certain suddenness...
Anyway, one of the features in the game setting was that there were area of a given city called The Combat Zone, the slums I guess, where the police would not go (of course, neither would the fire department), and the only way to get medical attention was to carry health insurance and hope a very heavily-armed-and-armoured flying ambulance could get to you before you flatlined...
When Detroit stopped servicing certain parts of this metro area in the 2000s, I thought then The Combat Zones had begun... so many other things about that game have become part of daily life, and this was just another one.
Your post here about an ambulance crew being held up made me think of Cyberpunk and all those game nights long ago...

Having been the company safety person and attended uncountable safety classes and meetings, this is clearly an OSHA violation.
All injuries are preventable, If a machine blows a gasket and spits hot oil, there must be a safety wall around it and many warning signs in all known languages.
Access is only allowed when the machine is fully deactivated.
Anything else is a violation and you will be in deep shit.

Nurses and doctors while providing the right to health care are attacked also. So are the numerous occupations that deal with the public. Its sad yet tolerated never fully adjudicated by the courts.

Are there no vacancies at the jail or penitentiaries? Keep this fool off the streets. How many more robberies does he get another, and another, "second chance" to commit. When I was prior CPD and a suburban PO I thought this was smart. While I still traveled to most CFD calls as CPD(for the obvious reason people attack firemen), as a suburban PO it's a policy over here I liked because shitbags like to fight the firemen/paramedics.

Firefighter/EMT or firefighter/paramedic are staffed on all fire apparatus.All cross trained members get incentive pay.The problem is not the “big trucks”.The real problem is not enough ambulances and paramedics.The city position is if we are paying them to function as ems first response before the ambulance gets there,they say send the Big trucks.This is a management issue and always has been.Most firefighter/emt’s really want to be firefighters only.This is not your grandpa or daddy’s or moms fire department anymore.Who do you want coming to your door when a member of your family is having a medical emergency?
CFD should stop responding to non emergencies. There are personal means for people to get to their doctor's office or medical clinic and even the hospital for non life threatening instances. I have a fever, I am coughing, I have a back ache.... etc., everyone can get there themselves. Major injuries, heart attack etc. should get an ambulance. difficulty breathing is usually lifestyle, or minor chronic condition all which can be managed without ambulances. Free them up for truly sick people. Yes, folks and people will sue, but defend them under new policy and they will go away. Very few have any merit to stand on anyway, and reasonable litigators will eventually see through personal greed and corrupt law firms money grab. Then we can move onto police response. Heard shot felt pain and graze wounds should eventually become a 311 report. No shotspotter, no need for a walkie talkie on a pole, no problem. Graze wounds and heard shot felt pain injuries are obviously not important to the city hall elite, urban reverends, and the politically incompetent.
We ALWAYS rolled on CFD calls when I worked the jects in the 80s-90s. We got to know them them and them us. We became co-workers and friends and the always thanked us for watchin their backs.
