Again?

We were hoping we had turned a corner with the holidays in the rear view mirror for this year:

  • An off-duty Chicago police detective was found dead Friday afternoon inside his Mount Greenwood home, according to police and sources.

The 59-year-old was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head about noon inside a home in the 3900 block of West 104th Street, Chicago police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Years ago, we moved the Police Chaplains website link up to the #2 spot, just under the FOP link in the right hand margin, almost exclusively because they have the full list of EAP links there and we wanted to make it easier to find for those seeking it.

Prayers for the Detective, his family, co-workers and friends.

Chicago's Finest,

The problem is with left wing progressive policies and all the mayhew they spawn -- not you. In their minds you're just the cleanup crew. Don't take it out on yourselves. Your family and colleagues will be hurt the most. There's no shame in seeking help for a problem you can't solve on your own.

He was a detective in Area 2 on 2nd watch, he committed suicide late Friday morning. Received the email from the sup later that day. I was expecting to come into work (Saturday) and see EAP, peer support or even the clinician assigned to area 2. I thought maybe our commander would be there, maybe she would buy food for us or offer support or something but nope! There was no one there, it was just like any other day as if nothing happened. Then the wonder why we are killing ourselves at a 70% higher rate than any other law enforcement agency in the nation. Moral is in the toilet, no one cares about us, it’s sad what these politicians, Hollywood and the citizens have done to this profession! Shame on our exempt members for not sticking up for us more, they are tone deaf. But yet they showed the videos at the compstat meeting this week of the officers being chased in their squad car around the district and of the red corvette doing donuts in front of the marked squad before slamming into the front end of the squad and taking off and the officers not taking any action. The sup and chief of patrol criticized the officers and not one boss spoke up and explain why the officers didn’t take action, we are demoralized and defeated. God forbid if they took action, they surely would take a suspension, be fired or charged.

Retired seven years ago at 55 with nearly thirty three years on. Seen this happen many, many times. No one ever sees this coming. Most can't explain why. Alcohol use usually plays a large part of it. Things that make no sense make more sense when your drunk. This is just a job. That's it. JUST A JOB. People who work at McDonald's have it rough. Usually don't get paid enough. Even though there isn't any data on suicide rates among these people I'm pretty sure they're not as bad as CPD. IT'S JUST A JOB. LEAVE IF YOU'RE THAT UNHAPPY. Don't blame shit politics and shit bosses for your misery. Or even that shit ex (wife, husband etc, whatever) either. JUST LEAVE. Go in peace and continue with your life. Wherever that takes you. This job is transitory. Just like graduating from high school or leaving the military you'll keep in touch with a handful of people. It doesn't define you. If you're not happy here then go somewhere else. ITS JUST A JOB.

Yes, very sad, that a job could destroy a person. Above the new a academy entrance should read “ abandon all hope ye who enter here”. A lot of people never leave this job the way they came in. Most are a shell of what they were. Evil comes into your life in many forms on this job. Hope is what you lose when you commit suicide. I can’t imagine the feeling of hopelessness. I totally understand how people get there with bad bosses, the nature of the job and the demands of trying to do a good job. This is truly thankless job. Too sad a good caring person takes their own life. All while coming into work daily, helping others so they can have a better quality of life. Agree; Too sad!

Sadly for some it is their only life until they retire. Some even feel lost in retirement. A lot of retired officers suffer from PTSD and have their head on a swivel just leaving their home walking to their car! A work police officer sees and hears the worst of mankind and it affected them to the point that they are not the same person they were. In time you lose the Innocence you once had!

And PLEASE… quit referring to these motherfuckers as “bosses”. They are nothing more than supervisors, and the majority of them are pathetic cowards who wouldn’t know what qualities make a “Boss” if it hit them on their useless ass.

And in case you haven’t yet noticed, the majority of supervisors don’t give a fuck about anything but themselves. The sooner you understand this, the sooner some of your illusions about this “career” will come into focus. This is a JOB. A means to an income and healthcare and (hopefully) a pension when it’s your time to hang it up. Nothing more.

Anyone can hold the title of supervisor. Very few will ever be a Boss.

Don’t be afraid to gather your coworkers and have that moment to express your feeling, we are unique in our job and environment, we spend more time with each other and criminals than our families, we need to get back to knowing that we are our family and hold on to each other and allow ourselves to be vulnerable when we feel weak or need help. I can see how CPD can push some officers over. The CPD has become a horrible place to work. The only thing good about this place Is the thought of getting a pension. Years ago, sworn and civilian members postponed their retirement just to stay and work amongst friends and good bosses. Today, more and more members are retiring with 20 years or less. I can’t see how the current CPD administration doesn’t see this as problematic. It’s becoming more and more clearer that he’s just buying time.

Many members had hopes that Supt. Snelling would bring about positive change within the department only to find that he’s a major part of the corruption. He’s the ring master of this circus. Many were almost certain that he would clean up the BIA and the corruption that plagues the unit only to find that he has given Chief Talley a free hand to carry out the corruption. He attend meetings and talk about reform, but he has made no steps toward reform other than to recommend that the police board agrees with his decision to fire officers (9161).

I certainly can see how officers walk around feeling as though they’re on an emotional roller coaster and in an abusive relationships with the department (shitty narcissistic bosses, incompetent clouted exempt staff members, cap on overtime, being passed over for promotion, watching the incompetent get promoted, days off cancelled regularly, new senseless directives posted daily, attending repeated in-person trainings, receiving threats about bump cards and other foolishness).

1/13/2025 06:26:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The way Commander D Blanton has put a cap on the overtime, he would’ve been able to make any anyway. She’s forcing detectives to force everyone into a days work. This has prevented detectives from doing a thorough job, and from being flexible with citizens’ availability for interviews to proceed with investigations. Detectives are holding out to see if she’s going be moved, but damn the shit is taking too long.

Recently retired here. I seriously think that the department actually does less today than they used to. There was a day when a chaplain would come out to the officer's unit or at least an EAP rep. to encourage someone to seek help. I was in a unit where three officers ended things inside of two years. And today, morale is even worse. Put the bottle down, and seek a higher power if you are even thinking of doing something like this, please...

Nearly 20% of coppers have serious problems. Debt, sick family members, alcoholism, lawsuits, medical problems, physical pain, divorce, emotional anguish, and on. The department and many bosses are the crulest to those members as they suffer in silence. It's tragic and pathetic that one day a boss will berate, mock, and target a copper in a fit of egotistical revenge, and the next give a disingenuous speech about EPA and looking out for each other. Yes, they bare some of the blame.

No, this job is not your life. However, it is a different job than most and it consumes a lot of your time. I dedicated 27 years to this job and I loved it (obviously not the moron bosses and stupid policies). I've now been retired 2 years and it's tough not being the police anymore. I really do miss many aspects of the job. It hasn't consumed me but it can be tough at times. You become forgotten by many people you worked with and of course the job doesn't care that you're gone. Your accomplishments are long forgotten.

And last if possible read the new policies and orders and the. try to work your way around them so you don’t get frustrated

I also left at 50 a few years ago, and you are correct. Health insurance doesn't have to be expensive. Talk to a health insurance broker (yes, that's a thing). Taking the city's insurance was NEVER a consideration for me. I pay less than $400 a month for health insurance (and no, my cost does not go up every year). Do your own research and shop around if you are serious about leaving before age 55.
