Just Don't

If you want a bunch of reasons why pursuits are a bad idea, hop over to this link here and read about all sorts of judgements leveled against CPD in recent years.

We won't bother to quote from the article except for this little item:

  • Prosecutors said the officers followed behind Wade as he sped off in his sister’s Chevrolet Equinox and talked to his girlfriend over video chat. Wade was traveling at 80 mph, while the cops were going 30 mph.

If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about pursuit lawsuits, perhaps some math would help? Remember those math problems with Train A and Train B leaving stations at different times?

  • at 80 MPH, the criminal had traveled .666 miles in 30 seconds - about 3,516 feet
  • at 30 MPH, the cops had traveled just .25 miles in 30 seconds - about 1,320 feet

That's a difference of 2,196 feet.

A city block, barely an eighth-of-mile, is 660 feet....meaning the criminal was almost 3.5 city blocks ahead of the "pursuing" police car in those 30 seconds....and getting farther away every second. That isn't a pursuit. Not even close. And with GPS, you can bet those numbers are pretty close to reality.

The city is going to pay out $4.5 million.

I was watching the chase LIVE on the news yesterday from South Holland to the Southside.
Chicago cars did not show up until after the State Police had a subject in custody!

THAT is the way to do it !!!

We need new laws real simple ones. Anyone who eludes a police Officer weather or not the officer gives chase will serve 1 year mandatory sentence in the ISP. If the fleeing vehicle is involved in a property accident 2 years in the ISP. If the freeing vehicle is involved in an accident that results in personal injury 3 years and if a Death occurred 10 years mandatory for the fleeing driver.

I was in 007 at the time and on scene for this incident. It was clear after watching surveillance video from a local grocery store that these officers were significantly behind the fleeing vehicle. You could clearly see the fleeing vehicle was blocks away and traveling at a high rate of speed. SCC makes a good point, “NO” It doesn’t matter in the eyes of the public or COPA as to what good intent any officer has in today’s climate. If you are proactive, be prepared to deal with the consequences of “doing your job”.

Ghetto trash section 8's are getting what they want, a payout for being "wrongfully" chased. And the taxpayers complain of this? Oh wait, no they don't, it's the politicians who get them to vote D so they can get their usual extra bump in the SNAP card/LINK for their daily welfare weed and soda/liquor.

I hear at least one pursuit a day over the air. The policy set forth by the department has too many holes in it. Therefore officers think they can justify their actions. Times have changed, and proactive officers should consider changing. This department does not care about any of us, unless you’re killed in the line of duty and then it’s too late. Be careful out there.

At this point, I support officers getting stripped if they are found to be pursuing a vehicle without just cause according to the orders. Stop putting your sergeants and watch commanders in the position of looking the other way at you “following” a car. Strip them, fire them, we don’t need them. If they’re too slow to read the room and follow general orders we don’t want them on the watch.

Down here in FL...unless it's really dangerous, they'll chase your forever. Usually they'll PIT you within a few minutes. Our county, St. Johns, has 2 helicopters, and the bars on the front are made by Roush Motorsports, they'll PIT u within 10 minutes. FHP don't play down here either. Actually all LE don't play. And 99% of the citizens and comments about LE and their tactics are all positive. They love and support LE down here. This was a great place to retire!

The Corporation Counsels Office who is responsible for handling these lawsuits is entire incompetent. CC’s hired are all most likely political hires. Doling out cases to private firms would make sense and has been done in the past but one can be sure that the cases would be directed based AA & DEI qualifications. The fees charged would be nothing compared to the millions handed over to plaintiffs who deserved nothing.

You are absolutely right. The policy is vague. It should be just NO.
Both the Helicopter and 57A come on the air daily on the West side with some dangling carrot for the officers to chase.

I’ve been following a group online that covers police actions out in Dupage County. These guys will still aggressively chase offenders for everything. I think the last incident I read about was for retail theft. 2 of the 5 offenders fled in a vehicle at a high rate of speed through Elmhurst and they caught them in traffic on 290 with spike strips. All the liberal suburbanites seem supportive and are stating how amazing these Officers are. I can’t help but wonder how “supportive” the City and Citizens will be when a group of these offenders fleeing crashes into some innocent family sitting in traffic?! Who will be the first to get blamed? We in Cook County already know that answer.

How do the police officers get into the minds of these drivers telling them to push the accelerator to the floor and disregard the safety of others by driving recklessly disregarding traffic laws? Maybe instead officers should telepathically message and command that these driver's apply the brake pedal pulling over to the right and produce and a license with proof of insurance as required by Illinois law. Why not? Law abiding drivers do cause its how civilized people conduct themselves.

Every underserved kid has a video game PlayStation console. Their study at home criminal primer Grand Theft Auto has taught them to crash into cars, flee police, disregard any and all laws and fire their guns at occupied vehicles in traffic since 1997. Gaming vehicle pursuits are permissible and earns bonus points. Disregarding standard acceptable behaviors and laws in a civilized society without consequence is the lesson learned into adult life. Its fun and entertaining you know. We know in the real world the offending vehicle's driver disregarding all traffic laws is not liable, but police enforcing traffic safety laws are. Maybe parent(s) or those collecting government checks for these youths should be responsible for their gaming tutorial real world education choices and pay their fair share for neglecting to teach their offspring right from wrong.

Maybe Sony and the software creators should be held liable for conditioning impressionable weed smoking blunted out youth to disregard traffic laws, crash into vehicles in moving traffic, and discharge firearms recklessly at human beings. Taught as a child but is practiced into adulthood.

It;s not that a jury usually finds CPD guilty of illegally chasing someone. It's that the city usually settles for millions without going to trial. It used to be that if a crash happened due to a chase and someone was injured or killed, charges would be levied against the fleeing subject. I believe Kimesha Foxxx took that away and wouldn't charge anyone, except the police of course. I'm not saying everyone should be chased, but it is fairly obvious (except to moron politicians) that if you don't chase, the offender will never stop and they will commit more crime, and more crime, and more crime.
