Downtown Danger

The Mole-People are attacking!!!

  • A man who allegedly fired a gun upward from a sidewalk-level sewer grate in the Loop on Monday morning has been arrested, Chicago police said.

The armed man entered a restricted CTA area near the State and Lake Red Line stop at 8:07 a.m. He then fired shots upward through a metal grate toward State Street, police said. No injuries were reported, and the man was arrested at the scene, police said.

A weapon was recovered, and charges are pending, police said.

We don't know how many people - police or otherwise - are familiar with the vast network of underground tunnels and such associated with the CTA. A lot of it is for venting air pressure from trains moving in closed tubes. A bunch more is for maintenance. There are all sorts of grates in plain sight downtown (think Marilyn Monore's iconic shot) and underground staircases that emerge from hatchways in the sidewalks.

But these areas aren't patrolled or secured in the manner they ought to be. "Out-of-sight, out-of-mind" isn't really a strategy that keeps the public safe.

It’s our job to let potential terrorists know of the city’s weakness and unwillingness to address these issues. Let something happen on a massive scale. lol if the cory doesn’t care why should I ?! Just pay me my OT !! Let it all burn at this point Texas is looking really nice as a place to ride off into the sunset.

nothing's patrolled like it should... how about the non-descript door in the park district pedway leading to a tunnel under the lake and coming out at a water crib?

Maybe the 018th mag mile blue card team can patrol it instead of dragging guys who aren’t shitheads out of cars . If you’re doing blue cards and risking your career and livelihood at least do it to the right people . As we predicted nobody learned from the Saint Dexter Reed shooting

The stripped 018th district tac officer volunteers for the sewer patrols but he might be spotted on another tik tok screaming at a sewer rat in its face leaving his partners in the middle of a rage fit again

Take some of the bodyguards assigned to the mayor and his family and put them on the CTA. Nothing about the CTA is safe anymore.

Just in case, the fire dept has a socket as part of its Maltese hydrant wrench to open the odd bolt that holds down those grates. You may have to remind them not many remember the dual purpose. It also opens the subway emergency exit s

I worked Mass Transit for a long time. In the early 2000's we would walk the tunnels and hidden stairways, old locker rooms for workers when the subway was built. We did this twice a year and streets and San would remove the beds and tvs, play stations that the mole people hooked up. Then about 2010 or so we stopped doing it. Only did sweeps fir special events like Nato, Cubs World Series etc. Luckily nothing major occurred, luck not good planning.

I am going back to the late 1960's. My Dad was an electrician for the CTA. He showed me some of the adjacent tunnels running alongside of the underground El System. Back then for every foot of EL track tunnels there was again an adjacent tunnel. There were several rooms situated along the way. These rooms where used to store electrical supplies and had an area set aside to repair equipment. My Dad showed me one of these rooms. There was not only equipment and a work area, but there was also a kitchen, bed, and relaxing area. This room was just north of the State and Lake subway station. When I was assigned to the mass transit unit, my Dad gave me a set of keys for the various rooms and locks. Whenever I was assigned to the State and Lake Station I would walk to this room. (There was a walkway on the side of the tunnel where one could walk to gain entry to this room.) I transferred from the MTU to a Taskforce Area in 1971. I don't know if this room still exists, but the room was kept very clean and neat. What a GREAT "HOLE".

I certainly have no love for Chicago any longer. I’ve been around long enough to remember rough times in the 70s and see a recovery in the 80s & 90s, but it’s no longer a place I feel any connection. That said, I don’t know Texas but I know Florida is not an easy place to live as you get older. The summer is brutal, once you can no longer drive, if your family isn’t close you are kind of stuck at home- sidewalks and public transportation aren’t this states strong suits. I’ll also say my healthcare experience with family is that it isn’t the best. It’s also not as cheap as everyone professes- $200 electric bills (conservatively) 6 months of the year & high insurance rates for both home & auto. The ghetto always finds its way to places and there’s a lot of loud obnoxious NYers down there, as well as plenty of people trying to scam elderly. They say the state is tough on exploiting elderly but I’ve found there’s no centralized links for any of it and you basically get the run around bc there aren’t attorneys willing to take cases with elderly clients (payouts not big enough and your life span is shorter so they expect you to die before)- lawsuit awards have to be determined by a jury & difficult to collect (which is why OJ moved here). Let’s face it, if your rich, life is almost easier no matter what state you live.

That one there has a plate welded over the keyhole. They are secured on the street level. Evidently, not so much underground. But then again, aren't they also supposed to be used as emergency exits if needed?

We need "Ed Norton" ( " Honeymooners") to address this. I believe he is with "Ralph Kramden " at the Raccoon Lodge tonight.
