Chicago cops, some on the ground and others in a helicopter, teamed up to arrest four suspects following a series of robberies reported Wednesday evening between the West Loop and Hyde Park. Detectives are now investigating how many of the crimes the group may be responsible for.
Starting around 9:15 p.m., at least 11 robberies involving 14 or more victims were reported before police apprehended the suspects more than two hours later.
[...] About ten minutes after the Blackstone robbery, a CPD ground unit spotted a black Mitsubishi that had been seen near several robbery locations. A nearby CPD helicopter crew immediately began tracking the vehicle, which fled from police.
So is the Department up to a single helicopter now? Did they finally approve funds to bring it back to FAA specs or what?

I hope they are safe to fly. The department is so mismanaged it’s unbelievable.
Let’s hope so, you don’t want to “Kobe” that helicopter. Never go cheap and on helicopter maintenance. It always goes bad. The clean up is horrendous.
Could have lived without the 3 year wonders on the Robbery team screaming out directions while Ph already had eyes on it and was trying to call it out, but these guys wouldn’t shut up.Let the helicopters do the work and call it out.

I’m guessing some unclouted mechanic is going to end up under a string of buses when this bird suffers a catastrophic failure over a heavily populated area.

Do not forget the first CPD helicopter that crashed onto the Dan Ryan in the late 70's. They ended up making the pilot a commander and he turned out to be one of the biggest clowns ever to have a gold star.
Why is it that LAPD and LA Sheriffs dept seem to have a gaggle of choppers with which to patrol but CPD can barely keep on in the air. Is there any reason the couldn't procure some MH-6 little birds to for the air job, they're small, light and relatively cheap and easily maintained and with only a 150hp engine probably get good gas mileage.

The department does follow FAA regulations with the helicopter maintenance. The problem they keep having is with 2FM supervisors not allowing the maintenance to be done by the mechanics from Gary Jet Center because 2FM wanted to swing their cocks around. This caused a lot of maintenance stuff to build up downing the helicopters that haven't been maintained. The unit is down to very very few hours before the 100 hour inspection is due.
14 CFR § 91.409 - Inspections
"no person may operate an aircraft carrying any person (other than a crewmember) ....... unless within the preceding 100 hours of time in service the aircraft has received an annual or 100-hour inspection and been approved for return to service"
I hope the pilots are actually qualified and not just recommend by the next door neighbor to the Mayor’s brother who thinks “the kid” would be right for the “spot”.

Pilots are very quailifird and all around good pilots. The city won’t pay for the maintenance so they can only go up when there’s a High profile case ie murder etc
I’m thinking about applying to SWAT. Former Marine with four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. They make major overtime and it’s a good way not to have to deal with the streets. Is it a legit unit to get on? I can shoot and pass all their PT tests. I don’t have a phone call. Thanks.

There's no special unit in the CPD that's "legit". If you really can shoot and pass PT then you will make it through the first round. Congrats...most don't even make it past that point. Going into the second round you better know someone. If you're tired of working a beat car, can do involuntary OT throughout the year and don't mind spending your own money on practice ammo and training then yes SWAT is a good spot.

Every SWAT Lt has been merit since its inception. You can pass the firearms and PT but the second portion is all merit. Guess who approves the scoring for the second portion? The merit LT. Nothing is earned, just given. SWAT wears knee pads, there’s a reason for that.
I saw somebody post that he said it and they posted a still from it, but no link. I found the video the still came from, and as much as I think he's dumb enough to say something like that, he did not say it in the video the still was lifted from.
