About damn time, but far too few:
Chicago Public Schools’ crossing guard staff were cut by 15% Friday as the district announced sweeping layoffs in an effort to fill a projected $734 million budget shortfall. District officials said 161 employees in various positions were laid off and 209 vacant jobs would not be filled in what they described as a “careful and strategic approach to reduce spending while minimizing the impact on classrooms.”
Nearly all of the 87 members of SEIU Local 73 who were let go were crossing guards, officials said. Another 24 vacant crossing guard positions were closed. Seven Chicago Teachers Union members were also laid off, with 19 open jobs eliminated. And 67 central office and network offices employees were laid off, with 166 positions across those offices closed, officials said.
The reductions come a day after interim CPS CEO Macquline King pegged the district’s budget shortfall at nearly $730 million, hundreds of millions of more than what was acknowledged by her predecessor, Pedro Martinez, who left last week after being terminated.
"hundreds of millions more." So CPS lied. Again. And Conehead wants CPS to float a bond issue or some such nonsense, saddling taxpayers with even more debt, just so connected banks can make money on the junk bonds.

i drive by manley on the way to 26th. after seeing this i drove around the school, parking lot was pretty full. that means a whole lot of do-nothings there for 64 kids. they must be getting a quality education

CPS and CTU are prime examples of educational neglect. To keep all the buildings open when there are so few students shows that the CTU is a jobs program for teachers only. The test score show that these kids have no chance to succeed when they are functionally illiterate.
Where are the AP English classes? Where are the math courses? STEM? World languages? Arts and music? Sports?
Across the border in Indiana, Hammond closed two high schools and several elementary schools due to low enrollment. It can be done.
Time to close the under enrolled schools in Chicago. A waste of taxpayers’ money. All the pontificating by Stacy Davis Gates means nothing. And, her child attends an Archdiocese of Chicago school. School choice for some but not for all.
Turn the low enrollment buildings into community centers using the facilities in the buildings. Learning labs, a meeting place for seniors, music practice rooms, food pantries, mental health centers, exercise rooms, tutoring for students in reading and math. Time to serve the community and not the CTU.
Much of the crime in Chicago is a result of low literacy, the kids from high-performing high schools are not out “actin’ a fool.” They have too much to lose and have the benefit of structure in the home and family support.

Close all the schools on the list. Terminate all the employees. Hire any of the qualified to work midnight's though out the city under a new program of no disability benefits for PTSD as Police Report takers after the real police determine the scene is safe.
When I was about 10 years old I was a crossing guard, complete with a orange Sam Browne belt at the Joseph Gary grade school. All we got paid was a cup of hot chocolate on cold days. My how times have changed.
Ask everyone of the students that are still in these underused schools to actually spell the name of their school. If they can they graduate.
More money for dumber kids...with zero accountability. Does anyone else besides me care that CPS have been graduating students that can't read for decades? Yet, no one seems to care. Every year they ask for more taxpayer money and raise taxes to fund CPS and no one bats an eyelash. Cutting waste won't make a difference. I came up in school and the disciplinary problems and the failures were kicked out of school. Everyone saw them and knew their shame. Maybe a few more need to be kicked out of school. It's not like they will be missing out on an education...Lets start separating the "wheat from the chaff" No child should be handed a diploma who cant even open it and read it.

All winter every winter, 69th and Lafayette. Babies trying to hold onto a railing crossing over the Ryan to get to school Bitch crossing guard never showed up. Neither did any parents.

The teacher take turns working the crossing at our school. They only make half of what the CPS teachers make, why can’t those overpaid CPS teachers do it?
