Most Illinois students are struggling to read or do math at grade level on their end of year state assessments. The State Board of Education’s solution? Lower the standards.
The board of education approved a plan to lower the scores needed to be considered proficient in reading and math on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness. It also determined the scores needed to be considered proficient in reading and math for 11th graders as the state moves from the SAT to ACT as the state-required assessment for high school students.
The most recent state data available shows only 41% of students in third through eighth grade could read at grade level in 2024 and just 31% in 11th grade. In math, 28% of third through eighth graders were proficient and 26% of 11th graders
New proficiency rates will be implemented on the 2025 Illinois Report card released in October, leaving Illinoisans unable to compare scores to previous years’ proficiency rates.
Got to love that last paragraph, making it impossible to actually assess the year-over-year improvements....or the far more likely, the declines.
Indiana resident and CTU boss Stacy Davis Gates still wants Fata$$ to come up with another billion-and-a-half while her members haven't successfully taught kids to read and do math at grade levels in years.
It is truly past time to break the CTU.

i remember when i was in school, the teachers would basically tell us that they were always teaching at least a 1 yr or grade behind. If I remember correctly, our schools "accelerated" or "honors" program is just a regular class compared to school district up north or in a different state. Our state exam was considered to be a joke.

Studied Electronics 101 with Uncle Mickey. He wasn't an instructor. Got a 40, which was a fail, but he just slid over ye olde Bell Curve and viola! I passed with a B. I took that class again as I didn't understand the subject after fail-passing his class. He was ahead of his time!

I put 4 kids through CPS k-12 and they all doing great. It’s more of what happens at home than in school. 2 out of college and doing great 2 close to finishing college and doing great.
During covid they handed out A+ for everyone so that helped huge with college expenses at SEC school.
No drop off in performance in college so maybe they earned all the A+.
Take care of your kids at home and CPS won’t hurt them.

And guess who the CPD is hiring ? CPS graduates ! Take a few minutes and try to read a report by a newer officer. The spelling and punctuation is remedial at best. Some new officers write every report in capital letters. The sad part is the supervisors approve everything. I don't think they can spell ether.
A Catholic HS diploma is essentially worthless too… nothing but a pipeline to a city job. If, you can keep the kid from getting a dui while he or she does their 1st yr at NIU, ISU, Southern before dropping out returning to finish at community college before taking those city job exams-

The academic rating agencies have placed the public school system on scholastic probation. The public schooling has since been downgraded to scholastic parole by academic progress monitors. I had to read police reports for 30 years. In that time I read a lot of reports that made as much sense as the recent report posted here. But, after reading all those poorly written reports, I can only remember a few that were written by cops who went to private (church) schools. This includes the people who went to private schools through elementary school and the switched to public school for HS.

Interesting point you bring up about China. Recently visited various cities to see with my own eyes what I was told. They are at least 50 years ahead of us. And yes from a young age those kids are taught to be dependent and learn skills in various trades. Meanwhile the majority of CPS students got their faces buried on ticktock or the ‘gram or too busy twerking. Not only is math and reading lacking from CPS, there’s no discipline or motivation.

The ONLY thing the Dept of Education should have done was to set the minimum standards to be met so proper nation-wide comparisons could be conducted across School Districts.
Any School District trying to do LESS? Cut off 100% of their Federal Funding, decertify their diplomas for any Federal Jobs. Want to work at TSA or the Post Office, etc. but went to CPS? Too bad - no job for you until you take remedial classes at a Certified School or College and pass those classes with a minimum B average.

The education system of this state is a joke. By today’s standards, a “gifted” kid now would’ve been an average to below average student in the 1950s thru 1980s.

A supervisor’s job is not to teach basic English skills. You’re asking for too much. At best, supervisors can kick back the report a few times and hope the officers have the knowledge to correct what they’re told to correct. But after 3 or 4 tries and garbage is still submitted, a supervisor has to throw in the towel and admit that’s the best they’re gonna get from the officers. Put the blame on Yoyo, cone head, larritoriius, landowski and any other moron that contributed to dumbing down CPD. In any other job if your work is below expectations, you’re out. Here you got a good shot at a merit promotion.
For generations now, people who cant read are graduated and go into the workforce. Some just go on SSI and food stamps right away. They use smart phones, drive vehicles, and some even go on to city colleges.
These non readers work for the city, and CPS, and Streets and Sanitation. Every year the population I.Q. falls a notch and the standards get lower. City services get worse and worse at the customer service level.
And no one seems to care...
