Use of Force Falling

What could be the reason?

  • The number of police uses of lethal force is on the decline according to a new report from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

    Researchers with the school’s Cline Center for Advanced Social Research compiled data to track and identify the use of lethal force by officers throughout the country. They found that from 2021 to 2023 the number of such incidents fell by 24 percent nationally. The drop was about the same in Illinois.

    The report includes any incident in which police used a firearm, including those with nonfatal outcomes, as well as any other use of force that resulted in a death. But it doesn’t draw conclusions as to why the decrease is occurring.

Gee, could we form a few conclusions? How about these for starters:

  • the constant anti-police drumbeat of the past half-decade has led to fewer police being hired;
  • the fewer police being hired, the less backup there is, the less "specialized" units concentrating on high crime areas and high crime individuals, meaning few interactions with criminals;
  • the lack of an incarceration penalty (no consequences) has led to a conscious decision to disengage by authorities who figure, "Why bother?" when the criminal is going to be out almost immediately;
  • the needless, redundant and overreaching "oversight" that exists not to correct mistakes or improve policing, but to punish the tiniest infractions as harshly as possible, endangering not only continued employment, but actual freedom.

The end result would be a black mark upon an otherwise stellar career, resulting in job termination and making further employment in most fields unattainable.

no one is doing any proactive police work anymore. its down to the lowest common denominator for interactions, some calls go very bad. but no one is actively looking.

They are accomplishing exactly what they wanted and they now have the data to prove it (even though crime is still an issue in my opinion)

I think its more about the hiring of dei pussys that are afraid of their own shadows ... scared snow flakes are less likely to use any kind of force other than the force needed to run in the opposite direction

Should an officer be involved in a violent altercation and offender ends up claiming injury. The involved officer must immediately claim IOD as well. Otherwise the jury will always side with the shithead come lawsuit time. Remember, WOL, COPA, IAD will interview the shithead and everyone is gathering his witness statements against YOU! Your IOD claim, injury time, months of occupational therapy and physician notes is what will help ensure your assets remain with you. Wish someone gave me this advice before my federal trial. Because when the heat’s on you, you will be on your own. Good luck.

Don’t forget cancelling all your RDO’s so officers are exhausted and not of sound mind to make split second decisions

My tact sergeant says I can police like it’s 2003. Nothing can go wrong if you’re the real police. The real ones drive a Jeep.

I agree with your analysis. If you are out here proactively policing you are out of your mind. The deck is stacked against the police and this is why you should walk away from any type of situation that could turn into a deadly force incident. Also, driving 100 MPH to a man with a gun call usually ends in a car crash involving the police and if you do choose to drive that way you might be the one and only car on scene and that is not a good thing if you want to avoid a shootout.

it's easier just to watch the criminals shoot and kill each other, less paperwork and less chance of getting fired, so why interfere?

Fewer law enforcement events of this nature = more numerous occurences of this nature amongst and betwixted the population.

It's the deescalation mentality. There is no future in being a gung-ho aggressive crime fighter, seeking to engage hostile individuals. The hunter mentality is gone. Not that the city cares about violent acts. If they really cared Shotspotter would still be active.

Let’s be honest, we all knew of “bad shoots” back in the day that never made the news or public’s attention with no bwc or surveillance cameras. Jvd and bwc’s changed the game…for good.

Heard a young officer say she would never shoot anyone, even if it meant she will be shot. Be the change.

Nonsense. Been otj for 30 years. Incapable of doing your job due to exhaustion or for any other reason? Hit the medical. Shit, take all 3 days if need be. Remember, there’s never a problem going on the medical. Take your time and get well. Get sleep, eat right, do the old lady a few times. All better. Fresh and ready for the rigors of police duties. Remember one more thing: the job was here long before any of us came on, it will be here long after your gone. Take care, be safe, and damn it use the medical.

Less proactive policing, less interactions, less stops, less arrests, therefore less use of force. It’s not that hard to figure out, keep up with the class thunder thumbs.

Since 2019, CPS has hired more than 7,000 new employees, including teachers, special education aides and social workers. The district’s payroll has grown by $800 million over that time.

The introduction of “ Less than Lethal”, such as OC Spray and Tasers, has confused the matter.
Fifty Years ago, the Streets were controlled — and Crooks dealt with—by Voice Commands, Hands, Baton ( a real hardwood baton, not a collapsible/ telescoping one), and Revolver.
More Options— OC and Taser— mean more decisions. More decisions in the same amount of time ( often split second), and the same information ( or LACK of information) leads to INDECISION and Hesitant Half-Measures.
Remember: Never use “ Less than Lethal” against a Lethal Threat.
Note: I have never used Deadly Force, but these are my observations.

Who was the guy in the old 23rd District who was involved in dozens of shootings, telling the youngsters on the job that if you write good paper, you can do (get away) with anything?
