That's Not a Rat

That's a moving target!

  • Perhaps off topic but there apparently isn’t any money for rat control at the CPD range. My ex partner’s daughter is OTJ and recently had to qualify at the range. The qual session was canceled due to a major rat infestation with rats running all over. Any confirmation?

No idea if this is the new Academy range (which is a disaster anyway), the old Academy range (which is so outdated and polluted, it's near useless) or one of the Area ranges (broken more often than not and contaminated so badly the EPA ought to be notified.)

But we can name twenty or thirty guys who would have been skipping bullets off the floor, nailing rats just for shits and giggles.

Me. I’m one of those guys. That’s a brave rat to be running around down there.

Don't panic. That's the new qualification standards!!! Rats are cheaper than targets. Hit one and you qualify!!!

Gotta disagree with u sir im a 20 year old veteran and I have to admit the new range is pretty impressive by city standards. From my experience it’s clean functional and operational. I don’t expect much but however it does work

Some of the rats coming and going have two legs. I can’t tell you how many log numbers I have seen from in fighting or the new culture of blue on blue.

This reminds me of a story that an Orkin guy told me. He said he had occasion to go to the home of a Captain, who I often heard described as "soft as puppy shit," to set up traps for rats in the Captain's garage. When he noticed a lot of bullet holes etc around the garage, the Captain apparently fessed up that he'd often try to shoot them in the garage.

I remember the days on midnights, I'd bring my .22 and shoot rats by Ferdinand and Tripp. It was very cathartic.

That's not a bad idea at all as long as the shooters use frangible ammo.

Years ago when I worked the range at the academy.
We had late evening qualifying......and when no one showed up to shoot we we used air guns to hunt the critters. It started after we found the boxes of targets and ammo being chewed on in a locked room! That entire building should be torn down.
And let the critters loose in the new yuppie buildings that surround the academy.

I’m pro rats on the range. It makes for a more realistic setting. Also, everyone should have to drop and do 20 push-ups before qualification. If you can’t do 20 and then pass the test————-your fired.

A friend who worked with me in 007 back in the 90's had been on a south suburban police department prior to being hired. The suburb had no animal control and many complaints about feral stray dogs attacking people. His department offered a ten dollar bounty on every stray dog they shot. After you killed it you picked it up, tossed it in the trunk and took it into the station for verification and disposal. He was parked, along with a couple of other guys bullshitting by a forest preserve one evening whe they spotted a dog. After some debate it was decided who would get the kill. The now deceased dog was put in the car trunk a few minutes later when a guy walked up and asked if anyone had seen his dog who ran away while chasing a rabbit....no shit..

Just get the Streets & San people to bait the place with Havoc. The rats love the stuff & they die in under a week. I've used it in my garage for years when they get in.

Worked in the "old" 5th district in the late 60's and we use to go out to the old grain elevators across from Altgeld Gardens and shoot rats on midnights.

OT:
THIS is why I will NEVER leave America again:

A guy comes to America. A picture of him is taken firing a shotgun at a club down in Florida. He posts the picture online. He is then ARRESTED by British for just posing with a firearm.

"Officers returned to his home and arrested him for “possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and a further allegation of stalking related to a photograph of a house that appeared on his social media.” He bailed out but was rearrested later and charged with violating bail conditions."

Recommend Terriers, particularly Airedales. This is how British Navy dealt with Rats, both ashore and afloat, beginning in 17th Century.
