Notorious Chicago gang kingpin Larry Hoover has had “virtually no contact with the outside world” for more than two decades, his lawyers have said.
They say the co-founder of the Gangster Disciples street gang “spends 23 hours a day in a concrete cell no larger than a parking space” at the federal supermax prison in Colorado. And they argue he deserves a break from the life sentence handed to him in 1998.
Their bid to secure mercy for Hoover, 73, has lingered for years at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse. But now a judge has scheduled a hearing for this fall — and ordered prosecutors to “make Mr. Hoover present in person” when it happens.
The brief order Tuesday from U.S. District Judge John Blakey sets the stage for a rare public appearance Sept. 26 by a man who’s been labeled “one of the most notorious criminals in Illinois history,” but who claims to have renounced the criminal organization he once led.
The sentencing judge is dead, the US Attorney who recommended denying any pleas for leniency isn't in office any more, and the judge - who is currently hearing pleadings and motions from the Madigan corruption trial - wants Hoover in town for a face-to-face hearing.
Given the political state at the moment, nothing would surprise us at the moment.

Let us not forget that when the DEA/Task Force Group made the case on Larry Hoover he was locked up in the 'minimum security facility' Marion, Illinois. This happen because the State cut a deal with the GDs. Minimum security for Hoover no rioting by GD members in the prison system.

I knew a guy that was locked up for selling to the police in Calumet City back in the day. He sold the mobs product so when he went in he was somewhat plugged. Hoover would be on the phone all day doing his thing and after he was done he’d let old boy use the phone for a minute because of his connection to organized crime. Don’t feel so sorry for this poor goofy he’s lived a safer life in the joint than out here with the rest of us.

Saw a guy sentenced to 25 years walk out of prison the same day (5 sentences of 5 years each, concurrent, 50% reduction because liberal math, two years on an ankle monitor watching cartoons at home, a discount for completing some BS violence reduction program. He is still on the "Board of Directors" for the gang and pulls strings as other inmates come and go, along with the visitors who come and go, and pass along his messages to gang members on the streets. Ask anyone in gang intelligence about the memos and other communications they have recovered, seen and heard from the Board of Directors of the gang. Chicago's street gangs may be "splintered" but a higher authority among them still hold sway, and if released, he will want his spot at the top again, unleashing a wave of violence the City has not seen in a long time. The lead AUSA is still alive and active but with private practice and no longer with the us anttorneys office. Hopefully he will speak out against this release especially for all the hard work he and his team along with the countless hours and days at a time away from families all the CPD guys who worked operation headache had to endure in order to bring that case against Hoover. His name is Ron Safer. Hopefully he hasn’t turned to the dark side.

DEA task force made this case against Hoover???? Hahaha, give me a break. You can BS a lot of people, but as someone who was directly involved with operation headache from day one until Hoover was put in federal prison, the only thing the DEA did was screw things up, embarrass themselves and try to have a constant pissing match with any other federal agency involved. The only useful federal group who actually helped us and knew what they were doing were Jimmy Needles and his ATF guys. The DEA didn’t have a clue.
He needs to be locked away forever. But for those saying he will walk out and have any kind of influence is crazy. If he were to try and go to one of these blocks in 007 trying to throw his weight around to a bunch of 18 year olds they will put 30 rounds in him with a switch and not think twice about it. No unity, no structure and no care about any “organization”. It’s block by block and that’s it. Nobody gives a crap about Larry Hoover.
