The National Guard works in DC because DC is tiny, area south is bigger than DC. The Guard doesnât have the manpower to patrol. The best we could hope for is federal charges and federal time for convictions. Once they realize there are consequences, crime will go down.

There are things Feds can do: we can investigate crimes against interstate commerce and crimes on federal territorial jurisdiction (military bases, national parks) and (under republicans) control borders. The Big Ones - for Chicago - would probably be those that relate to conspiracy, fraud, weapons and drug offenses. There are many things Feds cannot do in general policing. You arenât going to see - nor would you want to - FBI agents answering jobs for domestics, DUIs, etc. unless the city partners with Fed agencies to have agents ride with patrol officers - which they should and which they have been doing in DC. The biggest thing the Feds can do is grab bodies for guns and dope, because we can usually keep them in custody instead of releasing them under the âSaFeT aCtâ. And, of course, grab anyone illegally present in the country because thatâs a no brainer. The Nasty Gurls are just there to protect federal assets (agents and property) and be a deterrent.
The biggest thing this proved in DC is that we CAN actually âarrest our way out of this problemâ. If you think of it in those terms, itâs brilliant.

For those who are not long in the tooth, I recall when the Army Military Police and Navy Shore Patrol used to ride in cars with CPD and patrol Rush street and the downtown area on weekends to enforce the law against military on a pass. I would venture, although I do not know, that D.C cops could ride with federal officers and make traffic stops and arrests for local and state crimes. The same could apply in Chicago. That would certainly expand law enforcement. But, than again. Johnson would not permit that and Trump does not have to power that he has in DC, that is to take over the local police. I wish he had that and bring Charlie Beck to run the department and get rid of all of our patronage workers with gold stars.
