According to various comments in a previous posting, two Probationary Police Officers were fired this week for ... let's get this straight ... cowardice? And another PO was stripped and sent to Call Back?
If true, we applaud the Superintendent. Not all of us have military type backgrounds, but to leave a fellow officer behind with an armed suspect is a crime in and of itself - ridiculous to the "n-th" degree. We've worked with maybe ten regular partners over the years and been with a few teams and we can state without reservation that we NEVER worried about any of our partners cutting and running during whatever crap we stumbled into.
Maybe we've been lucky. Or very lucky. But we don't for a minute believe that this is representative of the vast majority of Chicago Police Officers. Hopefully, this becomes some sort of training or evaluation or something down the line. We run TOWARDS trouble. We try to do it efficiently and intelligently and without any of us getting hurt. We don't need to be worrying about who's got our back.

SWAT/HBT could not get to Joe because the piece of shit Daniel Salley was in a bedroom with Joe which was beyond a living room which was down about a 20 foot hallway. Salley made it clear that if ANYONE entered the apartment he would shoot Joe in the head and kill him right there. Let's get something straight, the situation became totally messed up when Joe was left behind during the initial shooting. SWAT/HBT was ready to enter at any moment, the bosses were ready to let them go, but their hands were absolutely tied because they would have had to travel too far, which would have left Salley plenty of time to kill Joe. This is essentially the same recipe of what just happened in 003...they left another PO behind...but thank God, this time our PO won and I applaud the department for holding those that left him behind accountable for their actions...even though things worked out.

Yep, it's been that way the past few years. Quite a few shootings on 1634's beat. Laramie is pretty active at night as well as School and Lavergne.
the FBI left Joe behind, not CPD. The FBI wouldn't let CPD take the lead to get Joe back. One of the HBT sergeants on the scene had to be ordered to stand down so he wouldn't take a squad in. FBI snipers had Salley in their sights at least twice and were never given the green light.

I agree. It's real easy to blame the FBI for what happened to Detective Airhart but he is one of us, it's our City and WE should have taken charge. Fuck the FBI. But until one of us that was on the scene says that we did the right thing by not stepping up, taking charge and doing something to save him, we are just as guilty as the FBI for his condition.

the two p.p.o.'s have been out of the acdemy about five months. both of them females one a 1 and the other a 2. alledgedly the reason for firing is non-performance of duty. when the male p.o. who eventually fired the fatal shots was struggling with this guy with a gun the three other officers on the scene failed to assist him. outcome = one dead bad guy, one hero cop, one disgraced stripped cop at call back and two fired p.p.o.'s

The FBI was gun shy after their scew up at Ruby Ridge. If the agents that ran out of the apartment and left Airhart, with a gunshot wound to the head, to fight Salley alone, were not going to back Airhart up, atleast they could have let him know ahead of time.

The FBI fucked up that incident.Period. The cowards left Joe inside and retreated. Would it have been a risk to stand thier ground and shoot it out? absolutley. Our Academy teaches them to ENGAGE. If they are not in a position of cover, they are taught to draw, shoot while moving, AND move to cover.

To me the problem all started when the Department made 2 years of college a requirement. The job stopped being a regular guys job and became a job for jugheads. It seems to me that the guys getting on the job lately are either pussies or cowboys. A small minority of the new guys know how to balance agressiveness with intelligence. 11:16:45 is correct when he spoke of being "mentally engaged". A very valid point, and I salute you for raising the issue. Everyone else, be safe and watch your partner's back.
I agree with 11:29 about the fact that the 2 yr college requirement has ruined this profession. Many of the kids coming on this job are not coming in for the same reasons we all did. I looked at this as my profession, many of them see this as a way of having somebody else foot the bill for those final 2 yrs of college (tuition reimbursement), and then on to grad school or law school. You are all correct that we must have the mindset that at any time a killer instinct has to come forward or we might not make it home at the end of our tour. But from what I can remember about the academy, theytaught us the basics, it was up to each and every individual officer to procure that instinct in themselves. Unfortunately many of them don't, but they are lucky enough to never be on the receiving end of a situation that would reveal that.
What kills me is how the over educated idiots on this job applaud the stupidity they create.
If the working P.O. would just stop for one month. If we could just unite we could stop all this BS. Answer your calls and thats it.

Despite the fact that idiots like you keep badmouthing the training, understand that like you, we are doing the best that we can with what little resources we are provided with. Most of us are making every effort to provide the recruits with the best training we can in the limited amount of time they are with us. Are there problems- yes, of course. We aren't given the luxury of deciding who is fit for the job and who is not - we are just trying to turn out the best possible recruits we can, given the constraints we are faced with.
Stop playing the blame game and grow up a little bit. There are problems throughout the department - some of us are trying to fix them, while you are just crying and complaining about it.

That may be the problem. It appears that there is a lack of experience at the academy. Maybe getting P.O.s with over 20 years of experience in there, instead of someone with little time on and a phone call.
This isnt a slam. Look at the training. Look for where the emphasis needs to be in training and street survival, instead of the feel good P.C. bullshit that is currently being shoved down the recruits throats.

My recollection is that at the Academy one of the first things they tell you to do in a shooting is duck and seek cover. My understanding of this shooting from someone who was there was that of the 4 officers on the scene that 1 was holding the female offender and the 3 others were struggling to handcuff the prisoner when the prisoner attempted to grab the officer's gun. Didn't hear anything about anyone running from the scene. where is this story coming from?

And I don't know where people get off suggesting that paper credentials should be the basis for being a trainer in the academy.
While I agree that trainers should have experience being the real police (and bonus points for surviving particular difficult situations intact), working in 007 or 011 does not generically a good trainer make.
My two recommendations would be Frank B. of 008, now a sergeant, who could have schooled 99% of the POs in the department on how to be the police day in and day out. That guy was the police off duty and on, 24/7. I'd hate to have him as my sergeant or as a trainer, but it is what it is. That badass should be schooling people, if he could stomach for one second being off the streets.
Next choice would be that Asian guy in 011 (beat 1121?) who had the hits on his scalp because he was such a badass in the '90s. When the gangbangers and dopeslingers in 011 single you out for a hit from among the hundreds in 011 and SOS roaming around, something tells me you are the baddest boy in the district. My guess is that he too could teach a few classes regarding how to be the police. Heard he went up to the north side years ago.
Don't get me wrong. There are obviously a lot (not necessarily all) of paper heroes as trainers, just as there are in just about every other cush job that exists in the department.
And there aren't 5 or 10 people in the department who stood out like the two I noted above, so they'd have to find some other criterias to use. But merely working in 007 or 011 for six weeks, six months, or six years, is not a credential in itself. Standign out while working in either of those two zoos is.

2 years of college has nothing to do with what may have happened. All the college requirement does is stop some of the complete morons from even taking the test. If one can't take the test until they are at least 21 that leaves 3 to 4 years to acquire 2 years of college credits at a city/junior college. If you want the job you do it no choice in the matter. Don't take it out on the new guys because they are forced to get some college credits before they come on. The people involved reactions or lack thereof would have been the same no matter what there educations were. You are either cut out for this job or not.

No, #1 was sitting with the female offender on a bench, #2 was looking up at the ceiling, down at the floor, all around her and #3 was off somewheres else. Once the struggle began, #2 and the PO who did the shooting began dancing around a shopping cart - #3 did not put her hands on the off. at all! The only one struggling to handcuff the off. was #4 who handled the whole thing right.
#1 left the female off. and ran off to cry in the security office!
The ONLY PO that drew their weapon was #4 - who handled the whole thing right!

It's very true. I blame the majority of horny, desperate males on this job for why females are they way they are. From the moment the walk in to their first day of roll call, 99 percent of the males, from the captain on down wants to fuck her...work with her for a chance to fuck her...does all the work for her for a chance to fuck her...babies her for a chance to fuck her...it never ends. Then, when it hits the fan, the same people, from the captain on down, blames the same female and says, "The shuda never let females on da job".

The Police board has nothing to do with it genius. The Sup sends the request to fill budgeted openings through channels to City Hall. The Mayor has agreed with the Sup's recommendation. Based on the spelling and sentence structure in your post, I don't think that conversation about promotion concerns you.

You missed a few though! Baby boomers surrendered everything. Gen Xers with 2 year degrees are what killed the job and department. Civilian dispatchers will get everyone killed. And on and on and on.
The problem is the job makes people see everything in black and white. Simplicities. Right or wrong, no middle ground.
It appeals to the basest instincts.

I think being a good cop depends on the person. I think there is a place for a lot of differnet types of people on this job, however, each officer needs to be able to recognize his/her strengths and weaknesses.
I can't tell you how many times I have been partnered up with a female who thinks she has to M.F. anyone she comes into contact with just to show how much of a badass she is......NOT. Then, when she pissed the offender off enough so that he/she wanted to fight, I had to do some backpeddling to calm the idiot down. The idiot did whatever I asked him/her to......no problems. These same females have also had to call a 10-1 on several different occasions because, again, they opened their big mouths and tried to act tough.
I've also had to shove a drunk, resisting offender into the car by myself, while my male partner stood there and watched.
All I am saying is that different people can do this job. If you are weak in one area, then you better more than make up for it in another, with the exception of shooting. You can't talk a bullet out of hitting you. And if someone pulls a gun on you, he/she is way beyond reasoning.
Everyone should be able to shoot. How many people do you know that talk a big game about how tough they are and how females shouldn't be on this job. Yet, they can't hit a target (that doesn't even move) with more than 50% of their bullets. And, yes, I am well aware that there are people who shoot better under pressure, and at moving targets, but they are not the majority.

I've worked with some male officers who were afraid to go up in the projects for a domestic, go into a dark building to look for a burglar, etc. so its not just females that are useless and scared!

The academy: Stop teaching these recruits the bullshit CAPS, diversity, "cultural differeneces", etc. In most cultures, they see nothing wrong with kicking the shit out of their wives. Does that make it right? Should we care how a Puerto Rican male thinks differently than we do? Other than realizing that they are more apt to try to hurt us when they get pissed, who gives a shit?
Females on this job: You're assigned to a bar fight. You get there and it's going good. You have a female partner. Do you think the drunken, fighting idiots inside that bar give a shit if your female partner is good at reasoning with people? Do they care that she has some martial arts training? No. They see a female and realize that the odds are with them (that means AGAINST you!). Better yet, you respond to a domestic where a male has just kicked the shit out of his wife. You walk in with your female partner and she announces, "You're going to have to come with us." Same thing. Had it been two male officers, he might just give it up, realizing he's going one way or another. Now, he thinks he's got a good chance of fighting his way out of this. And he's right.
And, as numerous others have stated, it doesn't help when these broads work the street for two years and say, "I'm through with this shit! I want to work inside." And they do. Look at any desk crew.
And this bullshit: "But there are a lot of males that are useless, too!" Yes, there are. But there are a hell of a lot more useless females than useless males. And, at least when I respond to that bar fight or domestic with my useless male partner, the bad guy doesn't realize he's useless. There's a perception there that isn't there with a female.

Okay, how about this one a female and a male cop go to a domestic in the ghetto on the third floor. Half way up the second floor landing a broomstick comes flying down at their heads. The female cop goes first up the rest of the stairs into the apartment. Enters the apartment where "joe" who threw the broomstick now has a butcher knife attempting to stab the girlfriend. The female cop turns around and there is no male partner. The male ran down the stairs and out of the building when the broomstick was thrown. The female cop was left alone to handle the "joe" with the butcher knife who is twice the female's size. A few minutes later the female cop comes out of the building with "joe" in custody. Moral of the story MALES can also be cowards, judge each person as a person and not all females are useless and not all males can handle themselves.

If the "two year wonder" females being alluded to had any juice they themselves could have shot the lone male officer to death, on film, and got away with it. Thats how it is. All the arm chair quarterbacks out there should be more concerned with the unequal treatment given out by our corrupt organization. Cowards come in both sexes. I've had some great male partners, and a few outstanding female partners during the course of my 20+ years of service. And I hate to say this (guys), but over that time, I've seen far more straight 3rd watch

Joe Airhart is a great guy, came from a great family. It was just a shame that the FBI guys he was detailed to never had his back on the ruse to draw out that psycho bank robber. Knowing that the offender was holed up in that apt. where a woman with children resided, entering that flat should
have been considered a last option only. Bailing out of there after Joe caught one in the head was inexcusable. Hillard's refusal to take charge of the scene at that point and give the green light to HBT to extract Joe immediately was also inexcusable. If I never have to work with the FBI again in the few good years I have left, I'm sure everyone will understand. And to the subject who asked if anyone has recently seen Joe, I have stopped by recently. His family rarely allows visitors in to see him, but I do stop by and speak with his family
about how he's doing. Joe is, simply, doing as best he can, considering the amount of damage suffered from his wound, and that's about all one can say. Joe has nurses to tend to his need 24/7, and he continues to have the love and support of his family. If any of you pray on a regular basis, keep Joe and the Airhart family in your prayers. Here is a real coward story; The Lieutenant of the Marine Unit just dumped a Seargent from his third watch assignment to midnights in 024 before change day and he didn't even have the balls to tell him to his face, he choose to be a coward and call this poor Sgt. at home on his 1st day off. The best part is that the same coward flooded Near North Highschools lower level by leaving the water fill valve on in the pool which he also screamed and swore at the Sgt.for as if he were to blame. The worst part is that this coward is what they like on this ass backwards Dept. and this coward of a Lieutenant is sure to be the recipient of a Gold Star in the near future.
018 and 1 does have a 1 car, two man gun team. Don't know if they have ever got a gun though. They do go on alot of radio jobs..

Stumbled across this blog from UK police blog. It is disappointing to read such misogynist opinions in the 21st century.
I have worked with loads of male & female officers - here in London response officers do not get partnered up for years on end, instead shifts with different officers can vary from one day to four weeks.
I am an unarmed response officer, which can have it's moments when you are facing a youth with machete. I enter those buildings at night time without a gun because it is my job. Do I ever worry about it? Sometimes - you just learn to put it in the back of your mind and get on with it.
Yes, I am an unusual female in the sense that I have years of martial arts experience and I do go to the gym in order to guarantee the fact that no colleague of mine is ever going to suffer because of me being physically too weak. So far, I've only ever had to engage into physical confrontation - about 10 times (in three years of service). Only one of the fuckers got away (although I managed to cuff his mate on to some railings before legging it after him).
What I am trying to say is that female officers are just as good an male officers dealing with situations. I have worked with a male officer in the past, who got literally lifted up by the perp and thrown over the railings (male officer was 155cm tall - they have removed height restrictions over here).

Here in the U.S. things are a bit different I imagine, in that the whole country consists of about 6 thousand different minority and special interest groups. Lots and lots of people get bound up in the group-think. They aren't Americans, they are Irish Catholics, or blacks, or Jewish, or Italian, or Hispanic. Its almost like they are embarrased about their own individual identity, and can only feel the pride (or the sorrow) by association with others.
It translates into everything. Religion, race, orientation, gender, class, education, neighborhood, you name it.
A confident adult wouldn't need to "hide" himself or herself behind a group identity. But most adults, here or in London, are not so confident. They dive for the lowest common denominator and hide behind the crowd bound by the denominator.
So please don't take anything written here personally. It manifests itself everywhere in every way. Its not a sign of your weakness. Its a sign of their insecurity.
As an aside, an ex-gf went to Scandinavia a few years ago. In Comenhagen the Danes would grumble about the Swedes. Flippin Swedes this and dirty Swedes that. People here would feel right at home just about anywhere. People here are home just about anywhere. We are you, and you are us.

As far as that lieutenant goes from what I understand he has been able to get his guys a boatload (pardon the pun) of equipment that have needed for a long time. The marine unit guys that I've spoken to seem to be happy with him. I don't work for him, don't know for sure. But I do know the sergeant was weak...and that's a fact Jack.

Now, imagine four officers are shooting at an armed offender (robber), from a position of within 15 feet of the offender.
What should we do about the fifth officer who, from over 50 feet away from the offender, decides to let four rounds loose (alongside/over the heads of the other four officers).
I can train for the time when I have to engage an armed offender by myself (should my partner/PPO decide to freeze/run).
I can't control the asshole who wants to try to shoot through me just so he can get his name on the paper.
That asshole should have been fired. An ass kicking would be too nice.
At the very least, make him stand at the 25 yard mark in the range, with a target on each side of him, while the four officers he "shot through" each fire 2 shots into each target. Timed - 6 seconds, from the holster.

I can never figure you out.
From birth you teach your children that I am a person to beware of -- and then you're shocked when they identify me with my traditional enemy, the criminal.
You accuse me of coddling juveniles -- until I catch your kid doing something.
You may take an hour for lunch and several coffee breaks each day, but point me out as a loafer if you see me having just one cup.
You raise hell about the guy who cuts you off in traffic, but let me catch you doing the same thing and I'm picking on you.
You know all the traffic laws, but you never got one single ticket that you deserved.
You shout foul if you see me driving fast en route to an emergency call, but literally raise hell if I take more than 10 seconds responding to your call for help or need.
You call it part of my job if someone strikes me, but it is police brutality if I strike back.
You talk to me in a manner and use language that would assure a bloody nose from anyone else, but you expect me to stand there and take it without batting an eye.
You wouldn't think of telling your dentist how to pull a badly decayed tooth, or you doctor how to take out your appendix, but you are always willing to give me a few pointers on law enforcement.
You've got no use for me at all, but it's OK if I change a flat tire for you wife, or deliver your baby in the back seat of my patrol car, or save you son's life with mouth to mouth resuscitation, or work many hours overtime to find you lost daughter.

As a female on the job, I must say that I am extremely embarressed by most of the other women on this job. No, I do not claim to be a super cop. I try to stay in shape, but know no martial arts or anything like that. I am only 5'02/120 and know that almost any man on the job is stronger. Although it is not all about strength to be a good copper, it helps in many situations. I try to do my best, but worry a lot that there may be a situation that I am just physically unable to do as well as most men on the job. I worry that my partner could get hurt because of this. I also spend a lot of time playing scenerios in my head so that when this time comes I know what to do when I am physically overpowered to get the situation under control without myself or partner hurt.
There are many females that are damn good police officers on this job. But there seem to be a whole lot more that are either lazy, ignorant, fat, worthless, ditzy and/or whores (and some all of the above!!) that make me sick to my stomach. These women make it harder for those of us that actually want to do our job and are why we have to work harder to gain any respect or trust from most male officers. These are the ones that usually end up working inside early on, and if they have to stay on this job, thank god. I wouldn't want to work with them! I understand why many males complain that women shouldn't be on this job. I respect their opinion on that, although I do not totally agree.
For the ladies: If you want to be known as a worthless slut that can be passed around and hope it will get you moved up quickly, go ahead. But you will be a worthless boss with no experience because you keep having these hornballs do everything for you and will have no respect from anyone that works for you. If you got on this job to meet men, you are pathetic. If you worry about breaking a nail on a job, do us all a favor and get on the desk or something. Quit making it harder for those of us that love working the street.
And guys, try not to judge the females so quickly until you see them in action first. Most will probably be just what you expect, but some may surprise you.
