New Police Stations!

007, 009, 012 and 023 are on the drawing board.

We should see something in the next 3 to 7 years according to the way the City usually works. And if Kennedy-King College is any indication, they'll be 15 to 40% over budget, have the new City approved collapsing concrete floors within 18 months of opening and be obsolete with a decade.

Included in the plan is a 300 space parking garage for the Town Hall District, one third of which will be parking for the neighborhood. Huh?

When they first started building the new stations Daley had a press conference with Hillard where he announced the building of a new 009 & 012 stations. That was 6 years ago. Don't hold your breath.

The routine is for the contractors to form a corporation for the express purpose of building a police station. After the last payout is received, the corporation dissolves. That way the city can suck hind tit for getting the floors repaired, windows fixed etc.

I have have heard the same story from too many bosses as to why various stations still have numerous problems: "the contractor went out of business."

This is INTENTIONAL!

Why doesn't Kass of Frank Main or Fran Spielman or even Patrick Fitzgerald look into this.

Hell, US Attorney Fitzgerald can spend the rest of his life rooting out corruption here, and the lives of all his kids and their kids too and they still won't get it all.

I like what ex-alderman (and convicted felon) Tom Keane used to say: "Let's go downtown and make some money."

Why don't Main, Kass, or Fitz do something about it? Because who wants to stand up for assholes who post shit like the guy in front of you? Anyone who befriends the police pays the price in the end. We're our own worst enemy.

I agree. My sister owns a "trendy" restaurant. When she opened she was giving 50% off to the police. Within a few months half the floor was filled with coppers every night. I was in there one night and there was 4 "you know who's" in cargo pants, white t-shirts with civilian jackets on and their stars around their necks. Coppers ruin everything. In the end she cut back to free coffee/soda and a 10% courtesy. That got rid of the problem. But not without a few confrontations and threats from members of the earlier mentioned group.

They HAVE to build a new 012th District station. I hear that the city already sold the land that the current one is on for more yuppie condos. Who would have ever thought that Madison would turn into what they are trying to make it?

Some of the contractors don’t even wait till the buildings are finished to go out of business. The collect the down payment for the electrical or plumbing work, dissolve the corporation, and disappear. This not only is a out and out theft, but then it puts the whole project on hold for months while new deals have to be made to get the work done. Let the investigative reporters and the feds chew on this, maybe it will lead to the mayor’s office.

A year after the 10th District Station opened a lot of lighting, ventilation and security problems cropped up and there seems to be no way to get them fixed. Why would anyone design a police station site that is almost two full blocks long and maybe thirty yards wide. The art work in the lobby is a bad joke: it is supposed to celebrate the African, Hispanic and Native American contributions to the area as if the Irish, Italians, Poles, Czechs, Jews and so on never laid a brick around there. Most people thinks the artist is celebrating collecting six figures for throwing some nonsense on the walls and floor and laughing all the way to the bank.

I am sure that future stations, as well as other new stations like 017 and 020 will have similar problems like this and like the First District with it’s cracked walls and floors. Would you want a building built by these goofs.

I remember the building of the current Area 4/011 on Harrison and Kedzie. The "minority" contractors installed "the stairwell to nowhere" and sewage pipes that couldn't handle the feces of a ninety-pound anorexic.

If the City decides to use minority
contractors to build these Police stations you can rest assured that NOTHING will work correctly in any of them. The firms hire the dumbest MF's they can find and pay them less so they can pocket all the left overs. Then afterwards they will have to hire a non-minority firm to fix everything that's fucked up.As was done with the new 008 dist. Then the work goes way over budget and the good citizens of the city end up footing the bill. 20 or 30 years ago it would have been the Irish firms that got all the bids but everything would have been constructed correctly and there would be no after problems. That was when the City that worked ,
worked. Now we have to put up with the likes of Jesse saying we need more minority contractors on this job. Fuck that Balloon head to.

Thats great that they are finally building these new stations. However if Daley's cousin is still doing the construction, there will be many problems with these stations. We have been in the 010th district for only a little while and many things are screwed up with that station.
1. only 2 of the 5 urinals in the men's washroom have worked for the past 4 months.
2. all of the windows in the lockup had to be changed because they were not shatter proof and someone broke a window or two.
3. the back door that all the pos enter has broken two or three times.
4. a loud ringing sound was heard for 4 months or so until they fixed only to come back for another month before they fixed it again.
5. the swipe card system has gone down numerous times.

these are just some of the many problems I can remember.

Thanks Rich your cousin does some good quality work and thanks for putting the taxpayers money to good use.

I have to agree with you. My brother is an electrician, he worked on the new 20th Dist. station. He stated the same; the minority firms did a sub par job on the electric. The company he worked for had to come in to fix the F@#K ups of the minority firm. My brother got a lot of O.T. out of it, but it is the taxpayers that are the losers

The First Dist. was built on the land formerly occupied by several automotive junk yards (Illinois Auto etc.) and after being cleared away, the ground was found to be a hazmat situation that should have been cleaned up.

The EPA said they could not use it for homesites, but it was acceptable for public building use which does not require EPA approval.

It contained many toxins which can cause cancer.

City builds anyway, and even before completion, foundation is sinking just from weight of the foundation.

In early 1980/81, 25 sat empty for over a year after completion cause Illinois Bell refused to install phone lines until the city paid their past due bills.

Then they discovered a room with 4 walls and no door to get in the room (just a minority oversight). They had to tear out a wall to fix the problem.

The Range equipment did not work and when they complained to the installers to get it repaired, they found out it was over a year old and the warranty had expired.

A couple of years ago I was on vaction with a group containing a couple of CFD members. We met a guy that was an iron worker out of Rockford. As the firemen talked about the screwed up station that they worked at, built almost 25 years ago, of course the ironworker knew exactly what was wrong with it. He worked on it as it was being built and saw first hand the minority contractors work. Even in another counrty you find people that know how screwed up this city is but suprisingly enough our local media or the IGA can't figure it out.

Foreign made autos are on the brink of surpassing American-made autos in U.S. sales. Japanese autos like Toyota, Lexus and Honda are virtually flawless.

Why?

Hint: Read the previous posts about shoddy construction.

It's like the emperor's new clothes. No one has the guts to admit that the emperor is naked.
