Hegewisch Mourns
Fully 72% of Hegewisch's cultural heritage was destroyed Wednesday in a fire at a popular eatery (Channel 2, Channel 5, Channel 7 coverage). Rumor has it that Cousin's Restaurant was so named because many of the people who ate there ended up marrying close relatives at some point in time.

OMG! They act like they'll never have another greasy-spoon "cafe" in Hegewisch.
They probably torched it to make way for another "El Gallo de Oro #39" burrito restaurant, complete with live Mariachi every Friday night and half-price Margarita pitchers. Muggs Bunny bar used to be a local dive (but fun) to go to but now I'd be afraid that I'd get my throat cut in the parking lot.
Hegewisch died 25 years ago when the Steel Mills went out of business. There are alot of memories and history down there under the shade of the Skyway and old Falstaff brewery buildings ... it will never be the same again. No yuppies in Hegewisch, just old time polish, ukrainians and other slavs that are being pushed out by immigrants who are here to "do jobs that Americans won't do"

The offenders were probably those umpteen gangsta and want to be lil thugs that rome Hegewisch unpoliced at any given time of the day or night. There are few police that give a rats azz about doing police work in 004 and those that do care are always sent North of Indianapolis Blvd to give the scumbags police service. There is regretably 0% police presence in Hegewisch and thats a shame, especially cause you've got probably 2-3 coppers or firemen on any given block.
Thugs drive around and walk around doing whatever they want unchallenged. Just about every store,shop or bank have been robbed and/or burglarized. You can't even return a movie rental without packn a heater. !@#$%

As a former Hegewisch resident and now a resident of the NW side, I can honestly say I would never go back there. It was nice growing up there. Cops and Fireman on every block. It reminded me of where I live now, except there was no traffic. I am sure it's different now.

Well, at least Hegewisch still has the city's only trailer park (just west of the Indiana state line).

Cousins was the only restaurant in Hegewisch. It was the only place coppers could go in th 4th dist. without being under fire.

I know one offender was named GABRIEL, DAVID - lka was 8200blk of South Burley.

I'd love to know why these 5 weren't put on Death Row. In court they probably claimed that they were drunk and didn't know Mathews was a police officer or some other such nonsense.

Worked in 004 for 8 years. Most of the time in the 30 sector. One car Bt. 433 has to cover from 110th street to 138th street. A 30 sector rapid is lucky if half their night is spent in the 30 sector. A majority of that time is spent north of Indianapolis blv. There are plenty of coppers who give a shit but a place like 004 that is in a nonstop backlog, coppers go where they are dispatched.
Yes I heard 004 is in a constant RAP/Backlog. Too many calls for service, not enough cars, too much territory to cover. It is the largest geographic district on the south side, right? Isn't it bigger than 008?

433s beat is bigger then a least three districts in the city. Yet 433 does not have a dedicated beat car. the car is never on the beat, and is assigned 75% of the time in the 10 and 20 sector. Damm I just lost another tooth.

I saw those TRU guys working in 4 last week.. They were doing a hell of a lot of traffic stops in Hegewisch and the EastSide.. Some of those guys came in with some good shit..Unlike how most people CityWide feel about the TRU guys, Seeing them rustling feathers and turning over stones where I live was a welcome site..
I live in Hegewisch.I also have a boat and a Harley & don't have to work 3 jobs to pay for it cause my mortgage isn't $2000.00 a month.We have white trash sure but have you seen Mt.Greenwood lately. YEEEEEHHHAAAAAAAAAAHH!.The neighborhood isn't perfect but which one is. Long live the East Side & Hegewisch! Still the best kept secret in the city.

Hegewisch is a losing battle. Unfortunately, it has already been overrun. The quality of people who are around the neighborhood have declined incredibly over the years. There is nothing there. If the city would put something to do over there, maybe Hegewisch would have a chance. Unfortuately, like rue stated, when the steel mills left, so did the rest of the working class in Hegewisch (minus the coppers and firemen)
One of the offenders in the Matthews case was the son of a f/ police dispatcher aide and I believe he is the one mentioned above. Mom was nice with a shitbag kid, no father around either.
No one could believe that the son of a person working in the dept. was capable of murdering an officer. I think mom got into trouble also for trying to alibi his story of being somewhere else.

And Cousins Cafe was like the "Berghoff of Hegewisch", just different rats and roaches from the downtown location.
im in 004. we have nobody to work 432 and 433. we usally have no rapid cars at all on afternoons and never on midnights. on 1st watch the wagon is almost always down and 433 and 434 are 99 units. we were in a backlog today for the entire 3rd watch with two seperate shootings. we need people badly but there are never any bid openings cause we have abunch of people detailed to tons of units. but usmg 018 and they have every rapid car manned and there never doing anything. p.s. not knocking 018 at all.

The offenders in the Matthews case were the Chavez brothers, Tony and I can't remember his little brothers name but I knew them and didn't live far from them. They were trouble from day 1. Shocked the whole neighborhood that they were capable of such a horrific crime.

Hegewisch has been poorly policed for years, and a lot of the fault of that falls on the cops assigned to work out there. I think former Supt. Fred Rice cut back the beats in all the Dists. years ago. the 30 Sector of 004 could use at least 3 more beats to even things up out there. And then, of course, the officers assigned to work out there would actually have to patrol the streets out that way, and not park their squads behind their houses, as the demographics of the 30 sector have changed, and you now have some real life gangbangers out that way, if the emerging graffiti being seen out that way is any indication.
Back in the day, residents of Hegewisch wouldn't even buy city stickers, and were almost never cited for it. They would say to cops who stopped them, "I live in Hegewisch, I don't have to buy a Chicago sticker." I'm sure that attitude lives on today. And of course, officers of color were never allowed to work those 30 sector cars. Does that still hold true today??
