Man, I just don't get it. Why the hell would you do this? I can honestly see the drug addict copper that wasn't properly screened by our THREE background investigators doing this kind of shit. I can see the gambler, whore monger, etc doing this type of shit. We do have those on this department just based on past experience and national statistics. I don't see the normal everyday copper deciding to be a shithead. I just don't fucking get it. I have had large cash seizures on street stops and search warrants (not like a million, but large enough that some $ wouldn't be missed unless counted by the Feds) and never EVER considered taking a dime. Yes, we joked about it and were vigilant about who was around it, but never even considered it. I just don't get it. Why would you jeopardize your LIFE for that kind of shit? And I mean life. Even if you are on your ten weeks and have no family, you have to live with the record of being a fucking criminal for the rest of your life. If you have a family and have been on this job for a while and don't have the luxury of another career that doesn't look at your background you are FUCKED. WHY WOULD YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT DOING SOMETHING LIKE THIS? This isn't a, "He ran from me and made me rip my pants on the fence" smack in the head at the heat of the moment type stuff. That does happen and the police SHOULD be exonerated for stuff like that. Joe citizen does not lose his job, pension, and freedom because he slapped a fleeing criminal when he caught him. I know it happens in those fuckedup suburbs and with juries and insurance companies, but not the norm..... This is a fucking theft/robbery/extortion, etc... I don't get it. Residency sucks, Taxes in Chicago Suck, The fact that we're treated like 2nd class citizens sucks, the fact that everything in Chicago is about RACE AND POLOTICS sucks. You must realize that I no longer LOVE my job. I have wanted to be the police for a large part of my life. I did come on with a degree from a good college (Non-City) when only G.E.D. was needed but I do think the department should once again lower the education requirement to high school graduate or military experience. I think everyone should get a degree if it does not create too much of a hardship for their families especially when the City still pays re-imbursement. That is a perk that is going away fast. The education does help (if it has some constitutional law, civil liability, and labor law classes especially) with the stigma we all have as uneducated buffoons that do nothing that beat people. Hard for the news to say that the city is full of brutal uneducated rogue cops when we all have degrees. But to get back to ME: I really do love my job. I love to catch the bad guy. I love to solve the crime. I love to help the little kid that was left in his fucking high chair by the crack addict mother overnight, even though some stupid fucking lawyer who is now a judge will let give that same child to the mother until he dies, at least I have some hope that the worst will happen to mother and the child will live with a family that loves him/her and makes sure that he/she prospers. I love that fact that I get to drive around and try and find the missing part of the puzzle. I love the fact that people who were in an accident; but are alright, love to see me. I just really like to get the bad guy. Trust me when I tell you your response and demeanor is everything to these people. Think about how your mother/father/sister/brother/uncle/aunt/ETC would want an officer to respond and do that. You will like your job more if you do. If they treat you like an ass, then change tactics. For those of you who ever work on a murder investigation and are able to piece together the clues to get a murderer charged and convicted...There is few better feelings other tan saving someone on this job. I know this is long and kind of stupid, but just think about it. We have a great job if you think about what you get out of it. W do get decent pay (not to start, but to finish), we have a GOOD medical policy, a good vacation system, we drive around in someone else’s car with someone else’s gas, can defend our family better than most because we are legally aloud to carry a firearm, and we hopefully respect what we do. Been around a long time - never ceases to amaze me how things go on in this City and no one in authority knows what’s happening. The Mayor knows nothing of the hiring scandal - but he knows if Graphic Arts at City Hall spent $36.78 on what he considered a frivolous expenditure on a desk calendar (I'm not kidding - he sent a memo personally on the issue). He micro-manages everything but can't see Rome's burning like another pompous emperor of the past. When I came on old timers who lived through the Summerdale thing told me it got very bad for north side police for a while. They would drive down the street and citizens would yell things like "Hey, you got any TV's for sale today?"
It isn't far from that now.

Also back there in the days before double action semi-autos, video cameras and CAPS the strongest incentive to a regular PO to behave in a certain way was peer pressure.
Officers didn't want to screw up on a call or fail to back each other up if for no other reason than you would then have to run the gaultlet of your co-workers at checkoff and again the next day at roll call and those old guys were beautifully brutal, blunt and merciless in their assessment of a non-performing officer.
That was in a fast district where they would give you jobs five at a time out of roll call. The dispatcher would simply say "get your pencils ready."
That peer pressure is missing today.

(Yes I use the word skate for a reason) Why was a Deputy Chief allowed to stay a Deputy Chief until manditory retirement, despite the fact that he allowed one of the players to return to SOS, and had at least one DUI arrest in the suburbs. And you wonder why morale is bad, and many of us beleive that our leadership has no credibility.
M.T. was only one of at least FOUR commanders who turned a blind eye to what was going on. Why are you singling him out when Wayne the rat took an active part as a LT and commander. Then there is the beloved Commander named after a cop bar, who was happy as pie because that team was filled with workers bringing in numbers. And last but not least our little Darling, Jimmy hot dogs (JD), who has since retired. Stop blaming one commander for the faults of four.

It is with tongue in cheek that the format of this letter mimics the CPD To/From report (entertaining myself, I guess). Let me preface the body of this letter by stating that if you have clarified, corrected or reversed your position on the following subject, then disregard.
A few days ago when the 025 Dist. illegal handicapped parking/lot blocking issue was being discussed by yourself and Ron Magers you (rhetorically) asked some important questions. Such as why, at a time of such public/press scrutiny, would a group of officers/supervisors band together and do something guaranteed to garner further negative publicity? You also seemed aghast that real, honest cops would want to go an extra mile for such a jag (my term) as Abate. These were valid probing questions and your sense of incredulity was that little voice of the healthy skeptic telling you all was not as it appeared. I give you much credit for that. It was with frustration that I couldn’t get through on the phone to your show as Mr. Magers was able to further the unsubstantiated premise, stated as a proven assumption on which further discussion was based, that this was a concerted effort by police officers to deny the press access to the accused. I wouldn’t have been ecstatic but could have lived with merely slanting the story but Mr. Magers made the mistake of restating this assumption as a given numerous times. Never was there a caveat that “This smacks of…”, “Could this be…”, “Are we seeing a ….”, so a claim of editorializing is unacceptable.
I am sure by now you have heard and considered the following facts/possibilities:
Writing a (legitimate) ticket or blocking a police-only parking lot denied the press only IF they are doing some sort of new ‘drive-by’ filming from their vans.
The city recently began a program of towing on duty squad cars for parking in handicapped spaces.
The hypocrisy of the media doing exposes on abuse of handicapped parking. I believe one ran on WMAQ during the same newscast featuring the story of their outrage at not being allowed to trample the rights of the handicapped.
The 025 Watch Cmdr. should and was only trying to keep order in his parking lot. A lot where prisoners are brought in for court by county officers, covert vehicles park, undercover officers and confidential informants frequent (no bat cave-like secret tunnel). And bottom line is it IS a police parking only lot and access to the press is a favor given when the Watch Commander chooses to do so.
An exempt rank commander wouldn’t sacrifice his career like this even if he was friends with the accused.
It was the judge that ordered knucklehead to be taken out a different door.
As high profile cases are sometimes handled this way, any reporter worth his salt would have found out where their subject was exiting. It is unfortunate that their usual wiliness deserted all of them at the same time.
Your doubt and sense of disbelief that good Chicago Police Officers would want to protect this F*%*NUT was right. And I would like to think Mr. Magers merely got swept up in the excitement of the moment as his statements were off the cuff and not a written editorial piece. But huge damage was done. This whole situation was, or rather should have remained, just another episode in the ongoing pissing match between press and police (a whole ‘nuther subject). Sometimes we write them, sometimes we give them a play. Choosing to write them in this situation may have been bad timing but that bad timing hardly warrants the irresponsibility and damage of claiming a police conspiracy and using it as a platform for further discussion thus leading listeners to believe it is being reported as unbiased fact. If I have swayed you at all, at least about the method that was used when you discussed this subject on your show, I hope you will address it on your show. I don’t think the damage can be undone-this event has already gelled in the public’s mind forever as a police conspiracy but it would at least prove the character you usually show.
I am aware of your pro-police stance and all the work you have done on behalf of the Gold Star Families and thank you. It is because of those things and your consistent objectivity that I take the time to write. Any lesser a supporter would have me on the blogs calling for a boycott, not composing this long-winded missive. I know you are an acquaintance of Superintendent Cline and had him on your show yesterday. Due to my military experience, I am uncomfortable questioning his decision but as this does not involve a lawful order given on duty, I believe a certain amount of dissent is acceptable. I disagree with his handling of this situation, finding it prematurely reactionary and based on media-supplied suppositions, unproven at the time. It is possible that he had real information that the demoted Watch Commander was actively engaging in press censorship. If that comes to light, then I withdraw my objections. Let it be noted that I am well aware of the constraints he operates under due to political ramifications and believe he normally tries to do what is best for the department as a whole. I certainly wouldn‘t want to be in his shoes! Consider having someone from the rank and file on your show some time, not on the phone but live, in-person to get another perspective.

The morale and leadership of this dept. could rise from the dumpster if we still had bosses of the same caliber as Vic Vrdolyak and Ray Clark.
Why must all the negativity continue? Stop the SOS bashing! There are many great officers who currently work there, and have worked there in the past. The actions of a few "bad apples" do not make all of the officers bad. You guys in fast districts know that if you called for help, and SOS had a mission in the District -they would be the first ones there to help. The bashing of good officers and supervisors who work/worked in SOS benefits nobody, and only helps fuel the current media circus. The media is comprised of police hating liberals who live by the mantra of "If it bleeds it leads (the news,) and our Dept. is currently bleeding, so lets apply a tourniquet. With time and adherence to the principles of good, honest police work the public trust will be restored, and the media will be unable to continue bashing us. Stay safe and God bless CPD/CFD.
