Shut Down the Blog?

Once again, someone has their panties in a bunch claiming that this blog is the cause of all the problems suddenly cropping up in the media. That the media reads this site daily and sits on nuggets of potential scandal until the time that they can bring them up to do maximum damage and embarrass the Department.

First of all, this blog didn't cause a bad drunk to lose his marbles and beat a woman half his size. And this blog had nothing to do with the video being released to the media. That is on a civilian and her lawyer attempting to get some sort of payout. And the gun team thing was bound to hit once the first video became available. And we also didn't have anything to do with the State's Attorney and IAD investigating, stripping and arresting almost 20 coppers at SOS.

We've tried to give coppers, especially unconnected ones, a place to bitch and moan about the rampant political cronyism, the nepotism, the incompetence, and the funny shit that makes for great stories. Has it gotten out of control at times? Welcome to moderated comments. Has it gotten bigger than we ever imagined? Yeah, and we've tried to adapt to it as it grows. We take reader input very seriously into consideration.

Here's a survey:
  • Does this blog creates problems?
  • Does this blog shines a light on important issues?
  • Who thinks we ought to moderate certain things a little more tightly?
Serious suggestions only. Off topic will be deleted. Obscene ranting gets flushed. Constructive criticism people. Constructive.

Does this blog create problems?
NO I think it's great the media does read it. How about doing a segment on how we don't make enough to live here for instance Channel 2,5,7,and 9??
Does this blog shine a light on important issues?
YES, this blog is the real thing. No PC bullshit. I do think you could use this site as a place to direct people to make changes. You are more powerful then you think SCC. Those same changes that we rant about we could change. It would be great to have a forum like setting, where we could come up with ways to change things. Start being the change instead of just bitching like a bunch of old biddys.
Who thinks we ought to moderate certain things a little more tightly? I think you are moderating comments just fine. Keep up the good work. Frankly, if we want fluff we know there is another blog out there that never touches the real issuses of the CPD that we can go read.
I wish the mentallity would change, and we all wouldn't have this "well this is how it is" way of thinking. We would be so powerful if we could just unite.

No; this blog supports freedom of speech more so than this idiot city goverment and this whore local corrupt media.
Remember why we fought the British for a separate Country; and also the Constitution, and the amendendments like the 1st,2nd, etc.

Does this blog creates problems?

Not only does it create problems, it makes existing problems worse than they are.

Does this blog shines a light on important issues?

Sometimes. For the most part, it's a bunch of disgruntled, unhappy and anonymous individuals attempting to force their complaints on others, or seeking others to join in their misery.

Who thinks we ought to moderate certain things a little more tightly?

Absolutely. Back in the day, it would take an act of god to get this much information, especially information that shouldn't be made public, to come out of the mouth, or in this case in type, of a copper. Now, there are more morons who spew information through this blog for everyone to see than we can count. Airing dirty laundry is not a good thing.

Here's another tidbit to chew on. After all that information was posted on the fight at Jefferson, especially that there was a squad car and a supervisor on the scene, what supervisor in their right mind would go out of their way to protect coppers, on or off duty, ever again? If you think they aren't seeing what comes of situations like this you are sadly mistaken. Used to be that a boss could go out on a limb for a guy who deserved a break, and it would stay nice and quiet. These days, someone would immediately get on this sight, accusing the supervisor of protecting someones kid, a clout heavy po, one of the chosen, etc. Then, as a result, the incident gets all kinds of attention and the shit hits the fan. The original PO takes a hit and the supervisor takes a bigger hit. You can see the results already, supervisors posting throughout the comments about never looking out for anyone again, not holding slips, going the extra mile on bullshit beefs. A sad day is dawning, wear shades.

As you said, this is the one safe place all us pee-ons can vent. I'm sure the people that demand the blog be changed or stopped are those that are happy with the status quo. Well guess what, I'de say close to 70% of us aren't happy. We, the ones that have no political juice, no mommy/daddy that were the police cashing in favors, the ones that refuse to demean ourselves by sucking ass to get somewhere in this fraternity are pissed off. Yeah, you 30% (or more) don't want change, you love this department because your career is going just as it was mapped out since your 1st day in the academy. You 30+ % are the reason we need to make change. Perhaps this blog alone won't bring about any change but hopefully it opens eyes. We all know 35th reads this and we are sure the media reads this. For that reason alone change has to happen sooner or later. We as a department have become a joke nationwide and it didn't happen overnight. Perhaps as the media learns more of how our department runs, 35th street will have to do something to curb the negative press. Suggestions: First and foremost, make merit legit! Now to do this is tricky. It would mean set standards on awards. Ever read some of the DCs given out? Some of us do that stuff daily and don't even see an honorable mention... Its a joke and a brilliant way to pad a rising star's folder for that merit process.
Second: Some sort of real criteria for promotion. a) no way should a five year kid be sergeant. Set it maybe minimum 10 years to test. b) the current testing process is a joke. Its always funny to see the guy in your district or unit that is the go to guy for advise scores 500 or worse on the test yet the kid with 4 years and happens to be really close to B.I.F.F. is in the top 50. This is fair or legit? NO
Third: Make one set of rules for everyone and strictly apply them to EVERYONE.
Bottom line is we signed up for a quasi-military organization and with each passing year it seems more like a college fraternity. We need some drastic change to make this department look even a little bit respectable and maybe this blog leaking out whats wrong with us will help.

SCC

I would vote to keep your site up. At times, it can be informative and often, funny. You are to be commended for that. At other times, it can do disservice as to what we are supposed to be about as a profession.

We are supposed to serve and protect, but here, we can’t even protect one another. Generally a post that starts with good intentions, ends with everyone calling one another names. What does that accomplish? You wouldn’t allow anyone to talk to a brother officer like that in public, why is it okay here? Obviously, it is easy to hide under the cloak of anonymity. Registration is an option, but still allows the general public access. Setting strict rules for posting would be my recommendation.

Most of the above isn’t your fault, you only provide the forum. But with that comes a responsibility that is serious. You seem to be an intelligent person so I am quite sure you’ve figured that out already. Your subtitle, “Sarcasm and Silliness” implies that this site is not to be taken seriously. However, several of your posts are serious. Serious subject matter should not be taken lightly and certainly should not be allowed to be defiled by some caveman that wants to see his comments on a computer screen. Keep on subject!

Also, calling for the Supe’s resignation is not silly or sarcastic, nor is making fun of brother officers. I realize that you rarely do the latter, but you sometimes allow this nonsense on your blog. Stop naming names (unless criminally charged) or initials and no posting of unsubstantiated, hurtful rumors. Speculation about the next Sgt’s class is fine but speculation on any member’s sexual orientation, regardless of rank, is not. Keep these posts out, not to a minimum.

Finally, instead of taking a subject into the gutter with name calling . . . look for real answers. Who cares how the merit people are? Let’s have a discussion on what WE as a membership can do to reverse the damage that merit promotions has caused. Instead of looking for someone else to improve moral, let’s start here. SCC – I challenge you to
mold this blog into an example of what make us the second most honorable profession in this country, next to that of a soldier.

The only thing I can say is that this blog allows all sorts of rumors to surface and take a life of their own. I've been reviewing all the stories about the Jefferson Tap incident and watched a video. You gotta be a fucking moron if you think that the "businessmen's" attorney is telling the truth. He's embelishing, which all attorneys do when they sue the department!! He is totally exagerating. Do you expect me to believe they "were minding their own business" and his clients were attacked??? Don't you think you would like to hear both sides of the story before you want to hang the cops? Has anyone, outside of the department, seen the video? Were they defending themselves? Here's what their lawyer said >> "Their lawyer, Steve Fine of Chicago, alleges that around 2 a.m. his clients were attacked by as many as six men they later found out were off-duty Chicago cops." Give me a fucking break. An organized attack by police. I'll put money on it that they were backing up one of THEIR BROTHERS. We have a bunch of whiney pussies that post on this blog before they know the facts and want to hang the cops before they know everything. This is one reason this blog is harmful and causes problems. I've read so many rumors and misinformation over the last few months, that it makes me sick. We aren't BROTHERS anymore.. Many are just whiney bitches with no balls - just skirts! Guys/Girls right whatever they want without a source or without ANY KNOWLEDGE of the event that took place!!! Let me see the evidence before I determine whether someone should be fired, etc. I think this is why the blog creates problems!

keep the blog. nothing comes out in the media from this blog that wouldn't come out otherwise. anyone who thinks the jefferson tap video wouldn't have been brought to light is crazy. you think that the lawyers wouldn't bring it out after the abbate incident? scc, you are not responsible for that one. it's just a matter of time...

did anyone notice how phil sidestepped the question at the news conference about what happened to the lt. of the A4 gun team? phil stammered, then said it was an off duty incident and brushed the question off. i can't believe the reporter let him off that easy. that reporter is too soft to work in chicago.

if the media does in fact read this blog, you'd think they'd start to see that the problem isn't exclusively drunk, off duty coppers. the problem is the command staff.

the lt. of A4 gun team gets promoted after this incident.

the commander of sos gets promoted after that scandal.

i could go on and on about all the nonsense in the supervisory ranks- c. white, r. guerrero, etc...

phil himself admitted the whole jefferson tap incident was mishandled. is he gonna give himself or his chief of staff a suspension?

phil also stated that what the w/c in 025 did was a misallocation of dept resourcs, and he'd rather see cars out on the street. how about that stupid seat belt mission in 010 where 5 rapids were held down on nonsense, only to have double shooting occur on the other side of the district? think phil will put an end to seat belt missions? i doubt it.

I think your blog gives Officers an opportunity to vent thier frustrations. However, it also allows the gutless to attack individuals by name without any concern for the truth. If you hate the guy, rip him on the blog by name and ten others will follow. I do not think you should ever publish first and last names especially when the blogger is anonymous. It is unfair to that person and their career.

Dear SCC:
NO, I don't think the blog CAUSES problems. However, I think we as a group have a lot of dirty laundry that would best not be left out for the world to see/read on the internet. It's no secret that there are many among our blue brethren who have major issues with people of color. Posting so many opinions describing blacks as "beast", "savage" and "Joe" only play up to the fears of minorities throughout this country, that they truly don't get a fair shake when it comes to law enforcement. One only has to count how many posts have been printed here with those inflammatory descriptions to cause anyone coming on this job to wonder what the hell they're jumping into. And I'm not even addressing the slams frequently taken at women, Latinos, and the Exempts, and particularly black exempts. Most of the black bosses on this job that I know and have worked for have been excellent examples of leadership. Have a few taken a step backwards? Sure. But I've seen far worse among many who aren't black, and exist at the highest levels of power within the CPD. And you know what? Most of the exempts at the top have never even been District Commanders, probably the worst job on the job today. I know I wouldn't want it.
Cline, Egan, C. Williams, Day, Caluris, Kirby, Gross, Patton, Cronin and others have never had to deal with the daily grind that is PATROL. Patrol is shit on daily; every month, new tasks are added to an already overworked base of this Dept., its patrol officers, with no relief in sight.
The new officers coming on this job will need to be men and women of exceptional fortitude to jump the many hurdles placed before them by people who never had to rise to the level of performance expected of today's urban patrol officer.

Just for giving me a term like ASSHAT, you have my support.......plus I enjoy reading the back and forth exchanges over the spelling.......hilarious. This blog provides a place for officers to vent their disgust at a Department that is run the " Chicago Way ". It provides a great forum to express our 1st Amendment right. If anyone should be allowed to do this it should be those that risk their lives to ensure it exsists. The freedom of expression is a great one and why not enjoy it. The Good, Bad or Ugly. You do provide a great service whether you know it or not. There are those that would rather we keep are discontent to ourselves. Those people I would guess our the clout clowns. There are also those that suggest out siders are reading this site and are going to us this against us. Yes, maybe they will read about the clout, nepotism, and other shit and actually write about it. That would be terrible. Dont blame this blog or even the Gallows for the decline of the Department that was in the works for a while.

yes the blog creates problems for all of us. Unfortunately it is necessary. We do not have a proper forum to air our concerns with anyone who controls our job. Our union does a good job on certain things but mostly it fails to address the concerns of its officers. The blog could be moderated a little better. It is sad that many officers like to gossip and say hurtful things about each other but I guess that is just human nature. Just remember most of us go to work do our job and just don't enjoy getting shit on by the city, the media, or our co-workers. Keep the blog running but P.O.'s should have more consideration for the opinions of others.

You guys do a great job of censoring info. -Does this blog create problems?

For Whom?

-Does this blog shine a light on important issues?

If the issues are important for those who regularly visit this site--the only criteria that matters--then the issues are important. The level of response this blog receives more than answers this question in the affirmative.

-Who thinks we ought to moderate certain things a little more tightly?

If given the choice SCC I would always opt for LESS moderation not more. Frankly I miss the spontaneity and give and take this blog had before you introduced a moderated comments policy. Having said that, however, I can understand your motivation for the policy just based on some of the comments that DO make it through.

All and all I think you're doing a heck of a job by providing this forum [I know you flinched SCC but, unlike your hero, I don't mean that as a kiss of death].

Thank you for taking your own personal time on behalf of not only your coworkers on the CPD but in addition to all the other city workers out there, who are inspired by your actions. I know your intentions were for the Police Dept, but it went much father than that.
Thank you for letting all of us workers have a voice, a laugh, a moment of silence for a departed loved one. Keep up the fine work, and may God protect you from your enemies who want to see you silenced out of fear and ignorance.

To think that I spent 30 years with this department and its come to this and yet I still read it. . . its addictive and about the only way to stay semi-informed of what's really going on, although after 60 people chime in on an event that they really know nothing about, I have to think the ScumTimes is factual.

Of course you cause some problems - so what? Anytime people talk about stuff that's hidden, problems come up. But it would be worse if it had no place to go. When people don't have a place to vent, they tend to invent one, and sometimes it's at a really inappropriate time. There are a lot of Americans who hate free speech. It's threatening to the status quo and the power structure to have rank & file cops speaking their minds. So, keep it up, warts and all.

Do any P.O.'s out there really think Abbate is worth defending? The 25th Dist. should be ashamed after pulling that stunt yesterday too.
YOU JUST COST THIS DEPARTMENT IT'S LAST BIT OF CREDIBILITY AND TRUST IN YOU.
Tough guys come in all shapes and sizes my friends and I would always follow an order from the Police, but if one of you was out of line criminally, you will be fair game. Not everyone out there is a small female bartender or a bunch of white collar businesmen. One day one of you so called tough guys are going to pull this shit on the wrong guy...wake up people !
Covering a fellow P.O. when you find a dime bag stuffed behind your back seat is one thing...Being a criminal is entirely another matter. You need to better screen the morons that are getting on and step up to the others who have been pulling this kind of shit for years. You are loosing our trust big time. Get a fuckin' clue !

I also agree with another poster that we should try to pack the FOP meetings. Ive heard that the powers that be stack the deck with people to go along with them. It seems that it would be less scandalous if there are reports of a big fight at a union hall rather than a bar. People fighting for better benefit
and things that arfe important to us and our families.

The only people complaining about the blog are those hiding under desks and gender confused.Lets face it,the reason you needed a phone call is your a retard in the first place(T.A),let the existing standards work for "real".Thats means real background checks to stop the gang infiltration.

Affirmative action:GONE GONE GONE.If you cannot meet the standards of the State of Illinois and the CPD,regardless of your skin color, then you cannot become a policeman,PERIOD!!!

The blog stays!!

Does this blog create problems? No. Its a place for us to bitch, bullshit, and have some laughs.

Does this blog shine a light on important issues? Yes it does. Especially those issues that directly pertain and affect us police officers.

Who thinks we ought to moderate certain things a little more tightly? Not me. Things are just the way they should be. Any tighter and I may not want to read it anymore.

Every comment I have read is right-on. The last time I checked, we are still in the good ole U.S.A. I would like to remind all to learn, enjoy and stop with the back-stabbing. There is a difference in calling someone out than whining and name calling. SCC is doing a fantastic job and in no way should it be shut down. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, keep up the great job!

The blog does not make officers act like fools, but to deny that it does not provide leads to the news media would be foolish.

Several times items have appeared here, of which I was unaware, and two or three days later Frank Main and the boys at the Sun-Times have a story.

The Chicago Reporter did a story a few years back on the first P/O board and quoted posts by officers. Racial slurs and comments from a liberalofficer were among those cited.

I am sure Frank Main will do a story on this site sometime, it is bound to happen. All those racial attacks and slight slurs will be mentioned and it will look bad on us all. Since Coldtype is the only liberal left here, he too shall be mentioned.

TO 3/28 1:34AM
The ghetto is going to hate us no matter what; mostly due to their "activists" and the whore media.
A black or latino guy who gets up in the morning and goes to work to feed his family and obeys the law is not a savage or beast and I always gave them the best service I could.
The beasts are PsOS that tried to kill me in the early 90s in the Division/Laramie during the bulls riots. Had I'd been given a shoot to kill order, I would have gladly killed as many as I could have.
Maybe that'll remove some of the fear a law-abiding minority who reads this site may have....

This site should be shut down. I know someone very well in the media that tells me they read this site all the time. He said that they knew about the 6 coppers back in december but were waiting for the right time to bring it to lite.

Ouuuu, if the media checks this site out all the time, hi we are available to liven up your papers and broadcasts. Stop by and see us sometime. Codeword: banana hammock.

Shut Down!! It gives too much mis-information to the general public. The same cry babies write the same stuff everyday. 1,000,000 visits from the same miserable 5% of the CPD. If you have too big of an ego to shut down the blog, then at least shut down the comments section. Your posts seem to take some time and consideration. The comments left after your posts do not and therefore should not be posted.

Every race has group of assholes. Our job is to DEAL with those assholes. You begin to give "those assholes' names, like JAPS, JERRY, OKNOD, YANKS, GOOKS,WOPS,MIKS, VC blah blah blah. Its just a way people deal with it. In a PC world of only Kittens and Puppies, yeah no one would say BEAST or anything else YOU ASSUME is XXXXXX. I've been on the job for almost 17years and have NEVER met anyone say "Lets arrest him because he's a (Insert term)"

I hear "Let's get him because he's an asshole, commited X and he needs it" daily.

People who think the vast majority of coppers fuck with people just because of XXXX, are so blinded by hate anyway, it's no use explaining.

This blog replaces the bantered bs and needed stress relief that went on between pos in the cop bars. Since there are no true cop bars anymore (Slammer, Mikes's, etc.) this is the place to talk whether you have a beer in front of you or not and the the nice thing is that it is city-wide.
Cheers!

I think the cat is out of the bag regarding this blog, SCC. Check out this comment left on the ChicagoTribune.com today (Eric Zorn's column):

"If you want to be truly creeped out by the CPD, just check the comments page for the postings on the scandals on their blog.

http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com/

Thanks for bringing this blog to light, Omnibus Driver. It's chilling.

The CPD seems to be arguing that they shouldn't be judged based on the actions of a few dozen in their department, but the CPD has no qualms about generalizing others like the national media or the "yuppie beasts" that pay their salaries.

This blog doesn't cause problems ---dumb fuck coppers and supervisors and exempts cause problems

The blog does shine a light on problems and gives the men a place to vent.
I remember when that "clergyman" went to the 018th roll call the outcry on the blog made a difference.

Don't ever stop the blog---maybe if the exempts read and took the salient points on the blog to heart they could stop the slide of the greatest Police Department in the world.

My suggestion is to disband all the special units and actually have people get into them with qualifications and not phone calls.

If you are in and you are the real deal fine keep your spot if not welcome to the watch.

No inside job until you get ten years on.

just to clarify---I don't want a spot or an inside job----happy to push a beat car around in squares.

SCC, I think you and your staff are exucated, well experienced, some time on the job, and looking to help and not hurt P.O.'s. But some of the posts are from rat bastards that do not think about the consequences of their post. Alot of these comments should be kept in house. As I have stated you are a smart cookie and have comment moderation enabled on your blog, some of the comments you allow to be posted, never should have. All I ask is that you use some of those smarts you have and do not allow posts that will come and bite (US, The C.P.D.)in the arse.

It is a way of blowing off some steam without going to a bar.

If it were not for this blog, would anyone, media or not, know what problems we face because of bad micro-manageing bosses and politicians.

If it were not for this blog would anyone outside the department know that it is department policy NOT to train it's first responders to respond to a terrorist attack.

If it were not for this blog, would anyone know that while money is being waisted on Daley's monuments to himself we do without PDTs, medical coverage, protective gear and other basics.

Could we ever have gotten most of this stuff on the regular media without reprisals. This blog is the last scrap of free speech we have.

IT sure needs to be kept up and running.Just because its a blog open to the public is not news.I am sure we can all do with out false information or rummers. Its our constitutional right to free speach.Unfortunately it must be done in secret or anonymously.Just think if thedept. had a suggestion box what do you think will happen with the suggestions even the best.P/Os unless connected will not get any credit. There are many of us on this job who have gone above and beyond our regular duties who are still in the same places because the dont have any clout or are not kissing the bosses butts . I wish I knew how many bosses on this job ,i mean some deputies actually have a clear consience for many of their dirty deads but some poor patrolman doing his job must face false allegations and be nailed to the cross .How about inocent until proven guilty please. We have always had bitching and complaing on this job.It depends on where you work and for what boss as to how bad or good your work enviroment is.Its just as bad or worse in the private sector. All I can say to close this out.May the federal prosecutor open the gates of hell and not close them until KIng Richie is in there asking for his cup of water and slice of bread .Chicagos politics does ruin much of our job.But if you have a good job due to clout God bless you.All stay safe its still a good job,yes pay can always be better .

Hey, this blog will educate those who do not know the truth and are being pumped full of media bias. Your readership is growing everyday. NO I think it's great the media does read it. How about doing a segment on how we don't make enough to live here for instance Channel 2,5,7,and 9??
---

The media is a tool of Daley's. We are getting close to negotiation time for our contract. Don't think the timing is random. Expect more and more and more...

Oh, and you don't get sh!t.

We've got open posts all over the place - you have a better target? One who posed in some more ridiculous situation than in front of a fucking airplane where a child died?

Seiser wasn't started by us - we've seen the graffiti in the rest area's all the way up to Wisconsin. It simply took on a life of its own in cyberspace. If you don't get Seiser, you don't get it - period.

This Blog creates problems. The bosses at 35th st. do read it, IAD reads it, the media also reads it. It used to be that you could never get a copper to talk, now you can't get them to shut up. We are our worst enemies. We have had a problem with certain enemies like the media for over 40 years. We are NOT going to be able to change this. But writing opinions about other copper, whether true or false, are just fueling the media and the networks. The media loves to follow around the police just waiting for officers to do something that the media could "twist" in their favor. And believe me, the blog is their ammo. They will not care if some poor copper loosed his/her job & pension, they will air it because negativity sells (especially police.) Well my brothers and sister in blue, the media has ALOT of dirty laundry of their own. They're smart enough not to exploit it so the whole world can see it. For example, there are certain media personalities who like to binge in nose candy (that's cocaine for you house mouses.) Other media personalities perfer dating through illegal match making practices, etc, etc. Morale is at a all time low. The rank and file at the ivory towers don't see it. It's up to you boys and girls. You knot out the negative media, and you won. That is why we shouldn't have this blog. Some of the comments speek of the first amendment right of "freedom of speech." The media thrives on the first amendment, and they will use it against you (the police) every time. So why give them more ammo. If this was a perfect world, we can say that the police are the only ones that read the blog. This is why we can't have the blog... Sorry

When have we ever said "I'M NOT A RACIST"? When have we published anything remotely racist as a matter of fact? We don't have to deny what has never been proven in the first place. Go back to the beginning of the blog and we have banned certain words since the start - nigger, spic, chink being the top three. After that, we banned cunt and other various mysoginist descriptions of females. Then homo, fag, dyke and god knows how many other things.

Two words we haven't banned yet would be "fucking moron" which appropriately describes you it seems. You make a blanket allegation without any proof whatsoever and retreat behind name calling. You must have been the debate captain of the short bus.
