Here We Go Again
It just never ends. Channel 2 opens the coverage:
- An attorney is claiming four men were brutally beaten a few months ago by off-duty Chicago Police officers in a bar, less than a week after an officer was charged in a similar incident.
Their attorney says the attack was caught on tape, although the video has not been released.
Oh, but it will be released. Very shortly. You can take that to the bank. The Tribune also covers this one:
- Prosecutors are investigating allegations that six off-duty Chicago cops were caught on a downtown bar's video camera beating four businessmen, the second such incident in recent months, law enforcement sources said.
In the Dec. 15 beating at the Jefferson Tap and Grille, one alleged victim required reconstructive surgery on his face and another suffered four broken ribs, said Sally Saltzberg, a lawyer for the men.
We alluded to a couple of scandals breaking. We expected both of these. There's still a couple more out there that we know of and god knows how many we don't. We'll have a follow up post on this shortly - probably after midnight with our regularly scheduled updates.

Another scandal. How about Fatso and Kirby and maybe some other exempts resign? Daley never takes responsibility for the shit he hires as they get indicted, so that means old Fat Ass gets a free ride too. You guys say what you want but something seriously went wrong starting back in the 90's with the hiring on this job and now it is really out of control. Come on you Fat piece of shit be a man for once and resign and take the other pieces of shit you promote with you before the CPD is damaged beyond repair. How about we as concerned police officers and taxpaying citizens start calling the politicians and the media demanding Fatso's resignation? We better do something to save our department before the few untouchables with clout flush us down the toilet.
IF this story is true and the attack was the fault of the police. Then every officer involved should be fired, every one of them including the responders to the 911 calls. The Chicago Police are in danger of loosing the trust and respect of the average citizen. When that happens, look out.
I won't comment about the choices some of us make. We are all 3x7. Gone are the days of having a gin mill all to ourselves to let off a little steam after work. I am not here to tell you what you should or shouldn't do but I wouldn't wish the next off duty incident in a tavern upon anyone. I would bet my left pinkie finger our department (via the 5th floor) will overreact and attempt to run an IAD sting or two at "copper bars". I understand, breaking bread and having a cold beverage every once in awhile with your watch is great for morale but I would lay low. Watch each other's backs and stay safe. Oh yeah, I am proud to be one of Chicago's Finest.
Better read up on Federal lawsuits against cities resulting in consent decrees taking control of big city police departments and putting a Federal official in charge on the order of what Noel Brennan is doing with City hiring.
Oh, and certain portions of any labor contracts can be thrown out the window in such circumstances.
This has happened in other places and can certainly happen here, especially with a perceived out of control police department.

The deparment tried to cover this one up because a recently deceased excempt's son was invovlved. All of these guts were shipped to Siberia (as opposed to being stripped like Abbate) when this first came out in Dec '06.
My source (and a very good one) said there's a clear shot of the Sgt pummeling one of the guys. I also got a look at the case report and it describes him to a "T".
I was really dissappointed when I first heard about this mess, because the Sgt worked for me when he first came on the job and he seemed like a level headed, decent guy.
Gentlemen; these incidents are all the more reason we should have a place to go and be w/our own, like the old "MIKES" on Webster. We let the yuppie run us out of there. There should be 1 on the N/S & 1 on the S/S.

Sadly, I've been waiting for this to hit the media...Someone I know and trust heard about this incident from one of the alleged victims right before Christmas. He relayed the story only after being asked why he was limping around and seemed to be in pain. Because he works in an establishment in which the Supt. has been known to visit, this person suggested to the alleged victim that he relay his beef to Cline the next time he showed up. Funny, but Cline hasn't been seen there since...perhaps he knew where the victime\ worked?

Hey numbnuts, just like all cops are not Abbates, all yupppies aren't "beasts." I admit I pay more in taxes in a year than most POs make in the same time frame which definitely qualifies me for yuppie status. Considering what I do for a living and what members of the CPD do, that scenario should be reversed. But life ain't fair.
I know that first hand as I've had a friend die in the line of duty and watch a family member don the uniform and work his ass off every day protecting people who'd rather spit on him than thank him.

The fight took place but the 4 businesmen were not innocent in this. The bottomline is they started a fight that they couldn't finish.
The coppers fucked up by walking away from it after the fact instead of calling 911 and having the 4 dumb fucks locked up.
I learned on this job a long time ago that a majority of "battery victims" are usually the loosers of a mutual fight.

Maybe we need to start enforcing the rule about being drunk on or off duty. I know that I will be. I used to be in favor of helping a copper out when he's had a little too much to drink. Not anymore. Because of this, in the future, anytime I am called to the scene of an incident involving an off duty copper who is drunk he's going in to blow and I'm getting a number. I'm sick and tired of this. You are warned. If you want to drink and act like a fool, be prepared to pay the consequences.

I was told this advice while going though the hiring process.
If you go to a bar and someone starts trouble. Walk away and inform the bouncer or manager. Exit the bar or go to a safe area-if followed it depends but if on camera you appear decent. When the on duty arrive explain the situation. Never strongarm or pull your gun while intoxicated. Let the on duties be your muscle.
But if you start the trouble-watch out.
I forgot,
Don't tell people your an officer, and tell any friends of your not to mention it either while off duty at a bar.

dont know what went down in that bar. wasnt there. all i know is that take a deep breath and think about the situation before you reach a conclusion. 1) video, as in the rodney king incident, doesn't always capture the start of a situation, only a portion of it. 2) heard some coppers got hurt in this incident too, the p.o.s could have been acting in self-defense. 3) just cause the complainants are yuppies doesn;'t mean they're not violent assholes. i have seen many wealthy pieces of crap in my time. 4) just cause a guy finishes a fight violently, as anyone acting in self-defense would, doesn't mean he is the guy who should get arrested.

Don't blame Cmdr. Schmitz for that mess with his Sgt. and the guys who worked on his gun team. Leo wasn't there, a Sgt. WAS, and HE failed to do the right thing. It's his bad, not Leo's! No boss should be expected to police his people off duty. If that's the case, every supervisor on the CPD would have to step down, because we've all had someone who worked for us go out on the street and show their ass at some time or another.
We're all human. When some of us are ugly drunks, we become a little less so. But it doesn't let them off the hook for absorbing full responsibility for their actions. and when drunken coppers go out and f**k up, they SHOULD deal with it, regardless of rank. Grow up. Perhaps what's needed is a reality check for those officers who think they're hot s**t. Yes, the police have a dangerous job. Yes, they perform a great service for the community. Unfortunately sometimes off-duty incidents occur. The PO could be at a bar drinking or just walking do the street minding his own business or on the EL or walking his dog, etc. If you have to use force to restrain an offender off duty make sure you call the police and generate paper. We have a right to defend ourselves regardless of whether or not we are on duty.
The problem with those guys at Jefferson Tap is instead of doing the right thing at relating the story to the responding officers they told them they could handle it (and obviously they couldn't). Now they are in hot water. The majority of coppers who go out are not looking for trouble off-duty so if you are called to an incident gather the facts, comply with general orders, generate a case report and arrest the offender/s. If you do that there will not be anymore Jefferson Tap incidents only assholes like Affante will have problems...

THREE-not four. THREE victims got the heck beat out of them. All refused EMS on scene.
Everyone who responded initially and the paper car from the second call have been to OPS and back.

If you were not on scene, did not drop paper, or actually part of the fight don't speculate about what happened.

And again, all I can do is just shake my head. I'm not a cop but I am THRILLED to have found this blog. Some of you are right of course, it does confirm every fucked up thing I ever thought about CPD to read cops give other cops tips on how not to get caught doing illegal shit and praying for suspensions for cops that beat up women so they can get back on the street away from the cameras and do God knows what.

If they would have done what you described to cover their asses, they would now be under investigation for not just a battery, but for false police reports, official misconduct,maybe perjury, etc.

The surfacing of said evidence changes everything. The only people that doing paper would have helped are the unfortunate beat officers who were assigned the job and coded it out, and now might be jammed-up, for not taking any police action!

I just watched a channel 11 show w/ Carol Marin about police problems. Tribune guy busted on the police ...but he was fair and he was right. But the other weasel kept squirming like a tweeking crack whore everytime he said something. I was waiting for an off duty copper to enter the set and give him a crack.
I watched the ch.11 thing w/Marin tonite too. Remember the one guy said Chicago is way under the national % of beefs(both brutality & theft)as compared to N.Y. & L.A.

Yes, the liberal public hates cops. During my hiring process people openly stated. "Why are you leaving..." - (to join CPD) I heard this response twice "Oh, I hate the police" My friends from college think I'm foolish or shocked. The public views us with a lack of respect, or that " we fuck people over" or that cops are uneducated mindless dopes.
