Police Board Meeting Mayhem
- A disruptive crowd angry over the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man by a police officer prompted an abrupt adjournment Thursday night of a routine Chicago Police Board meeting.
About 15 minutes after starting, Board President Demetrius Carney adjourned the meeting when audience members started chanting "No justice, no peace!" and approached the nine-member panel.
After adjournment, board members and Interim Supt. Dana Starks left the meeting room at Chicago Police Headquarters through a side door. Rows of police officers lined up between board members and the crowd.
And the typical conspiracy theories abound:
- Community activist Queen Sister of the It Takes a Village organization told the board that the community suspects that police are planting on civilians the same guns turned in during gun buy-back programs.
And according to a sharp eyed commentator of ours:
- I just finished watching the 9:00 P.M. WGN News regarding the protesters at the Police Board meeting. The reporter then interviewed a protester. The protester was no other than Kenny Shannon. Yes, the same Kenny Shannon that is a top leader for the Conservative Vice Lords. Yes, the same Kenny Shannon who is responsible for at least 20 years of murder and mayhem on the westside. Nice!
We didn't see this coverage, but if Kenny Shannon, aka Kenny Shoulder, one of the top generals, if not the top guy in the conservative vice lords is being quoted and interviewed by the media, then the North Lawndale community has a major problem with credibility and questionable motivation. Has anyone else seen the Intelligence bulletin put out by Squad 60 outlining the conflict in 011 between the "lawndale crazies" and the various vice lord factions? If someone has the whole thing, it shows that the dead OFFENDER was an integral part of this criminal organization.

SCC, Attached is a letter to the editor I fired off to the Sun Times in response to Mary Mitchell's column today. Since its a bit long to probably make it to publication (albeit watered down to appeal to the masses), here u go:
As a longtime resident of Chicago, recently relocated to Philadelphia, I have been closely following the stories surrounding the shooting of Aaron Harrison. I am confused as to why this incident has erupted to such a frenzy that the term "race riots" is being thrown around by Mary Mitchell. If I understand this correctly, Chicago is still a place where police officers actively patrol very high crime areas looking for criminals. Citizens in these communities demand it (as well they should). When the police see a person who they (for whatever reason) believe has a gun, a chase ensues. During the chase, the pursuing officer perceives that the individual fleeing is turning toward him with a handgun. In his defense, the officer shoots the individual. A gun is recovered at the scene, proving there was obviously some validity to the officer's initial belief the individual was armed. I mean, not every 18 year old on the west side is armed, right?
The reality here is that an officer with the best intentions of doing proactive police work did successfully find a person with a gun that night. It is extremely unfortunate that the situation met a tragic outcome. But instead of the community recognizing that encounters between police and armed individuals are inherently dangerous, an angry mob throw bottles and bricks at the police, because the armed individual was "defenseless". The antiquated police "code of silence" from the "Jon Burge" era is cited by Mary Mitchell as a major root of the problems between the police and the community. But there is no mention of the current "No Snitchin" mentality that is extremely prevalent in violent neighborhoods, and is championed to the youth by popular rap artists such as Chamillionaire. Does this not equally reinforce or contribute to a code of silence? Readers can Google "no snitchin" and make their own decisions as to what contributes to low clearance rates in high crime areas.
Have I been gone too long? Has the citizenry of Chicago lost all rational thought? Its not like I moved to Mayberry or anything, Philadelphia had its 258th homicide today. Although I am only observing the situation from afar, I think the solution is clear: If communities don't want the police to pro-actively patrol high crime neighborhoods looking for criminals with guns, because heaven forbid they might actually find one; please just let the police department know. It might make picking a Superintendent easier. I'm sure Mayor Daley will be happy to have the police use that extra time to write more tickets to fill this ridiculous budget shortfall. I would hate to think that a community who demanded the police take guns off the street would riot as a result of the police (even with a tragic outcome) having done their job. Such would be a tragedy worthy of Shakespeare.
Didn't see that one coming a mile away. Good work, good decision to let these people have a voice. We should hand out their rap sheets before the next meeting, and instead of brownies and coffee, howz about blunts and O.E.

Our interim Superintendent started this crap. He did not defend the Department throughout this entire incident thus far. He did not mention that this young man was NOT shot in the back as he was running away but shot as he turned to shoot at a Chicago Police Officer.
Dana Starks has seemed to do nothing regarding this incident but work to incite a mob. He has done this through inaction, allowing suppositions to proliferate, not defending his troops, and pandering to the media and some other interested party.
No matter what Dana Starks may be or what people said he was about, I saw him as a policeman. I am deeply disappointed that rather than work to save the city from frivolous lawsuits and inform the community's of additional facts as the investigation unfolded, he choose to do nothing. Well, really worse than nothing. He conveniently invited all the Reverends and Ministers and the community who are being kept in the dark, to the Police Board meeting. These people NEVER show up to the meetings. They would never know there was one unless someone told them.
Starks had these activist at HQ last week for a demonstration he set up. He had them back again for the Police Board meeting. That HE had to leave by the back door is such a lark. Is that how he chooses to pretend he had nothing to do with it?
The Police Board Meetings are not listed on the internet. This was an inside job. Its perfectly fine for the community to get together with us to discuss problems but to have our own Interim Superintendent set us up by allowing a bogus story to continue while tolerating some community activists that think they have to take down people who mess with their "babies" is just wrong. Where is this Interim Superintendent and Reverends when the community does not "take down" those teens with guns, drug dealing gangsters in their neighborhoods, and a host of other offenders that mess with their "babies?"
If they did then the public would not run from the Police but be glad to see them.
We are doomed. We don't stand a chance with leadership like this who is working on some strange agenda. It certainly is not to lead this Department.

Man slain in Old Town
A 32-year-old man was shot and killed on Chicago's Near North Side early this morning, police said.
The man, whom police have not identified, was found fatally wounded in the 400 block of West Evergreen Avenue in the Old Town neighborhood just before 2 a.m., Officer David Banks said.

Seemes to me that all this is by design. On the larger scale, let the westside erupt...property values plunge even lower. Grandma sells her home. Investors go in, buy up all the land and kick out most of the residents left and the others will be in jail after the revolt. Put me down for 2 or 3 acres, so I can build some new affordable housing with market rate homes thrown in as gravy!

You people just don't get it. Even as you read this the investigation as to whether or not this was a justified shooting is being decided not by the department but on the 5th floor of city hall. If its justified we could very well see a riot. Costing Daley his legacy. Costing Daley the olympics. Costing Daley the ire of the poverty pimps. First let me start off by saying that I love this job, it is all I have ever wanted to be since I was a little kid. To be able to call myself a Chicago Police Officer is both an honor and a privilege.
This is a rough time for the department in that we lack any real leadership, and in the face of adversity those that wear the stars on their collars do not openly support the actions of their line officers. These actions, if allowed to continue will do nothing but cause the moral to plummet farther into the toilet. I cannot stress enough how much we need a real leader and not some clout heavy buffoon who thinks he’s king shit. It has been a long time since we’ve had one of those.
I am scared. I am scared that because of this lack of leadership and the inability for the brass to stand up and for this department that it will cost officers their lives. The police department is supposed to represent authority, control, and order. These are some of the basic foundations that hold a civilized society together. And when we as a department cannot even support ourselves how can we hold together a society that increasingly does not seem to want our help. Every day I put on this uniform, and every day I pray that I, along with every one else who wears this uniform, gets to go home safe.

Not if we don't show up. Let's see...risk your safety for these people...not me...not my neighbors. Can you imagine if the westside did actually go up for grabs and you got involved in a shooting? Even if it was a text book 100% perfectly justifiably shooting, you'd still be extra screwed on that one. Is it worth all the headache? Not to me. Let it go up. We were told at roll call to let the people do what they want. The higher ups think it's better to let them do whatever they want than to stop them and cause more shit. What's a little shouting, name calling and blockading a district. I think giving an inch and they will take a mile.

First let me start off by saying that I love this job, it is all I have ever wanted to be since I was a little kid. To be able to call myself a Chicago Police Officer is both an honor and a privilege.
This is a rough time for the department in that we lack any real leadership, and in the face of adversity those that wear the stars on their collars do not openly support the actions of their line officers. These actions, if allowed to continue will do nothing but cause the moral to plummet farther into the toilet. I cannot stress enough how much we need a real leader and not some clout heavy buffoon who thinks he’s king shit. It has been a long time since we’ve had one of those.
I am scared. I am scared that because of this lack of leadership and the inability for the brass to stand up and for this department that it will cost officers their lives. The police department is supposed to represent authority, control, and order. These are some of the basic foundations that hold a civilized society together. And when we as a department cannot even support ourselves how can we hold together a society that increasingly does not seem to want our help. Every day I put on this uniform, and every day I pray that I, along with every one else who wears this uniform, gets to go home safe.

Parking tickets, traffic details, body removal, domestics, and shootings, and doing what the alderthings wants is all part of being a cop. It's not just arresting people. Anybody with any sense who is still young enough should make the move to the suburbs. A lot of them pay as good or better than CPD. They are run better, they have better officers, you can usually live where you want. With the climate in CPD lately, I don't know why anybody would do anything more than what is required every day at work (answer jobs). Also, I can't believe the garbage officers that are getting hired in the department. P.O.'s of all races and both sexes look like shit. P.O.'s with tatoo's on their neck, male's wearing earings, cornrows, shaggy facial hair, ponytails, these stupid mohawks I see on guys lately, uniforms look like shit, I could go on and on. The media and the public overall hate us and they do what they can to make us look bad, but a lot of us contribute by also making us look just as bad. The bottom of the barrel shit that the State Police and suburban department's won't hire get hired by CPD. It's really sad.

I have to agree with this post.....I also think that the end of rotating shifts had a negative effect on camraderie and cohesiveness, watch parties were a lot of fun. But I have to ask, if we are all working together all of the time, on straight watches, should't that promote togetherness? I am a patrol Sgt, and it amazes me how many different officers approach me to speak badly about others. "Why does he/she get that car?" "Why does he/she get an early car?" And it is also my opinion that younger officers, generally speaking, do not respect the experience of older officers. But I will also say, that 23 years ago, I thought that I knew a lot more than I really did.
That being said, it does seem like there is much too much criticism posted and voiced based on too many irrelavent mitigating factors. Went to college? Must be an asshat. High school diploma? Must be an asshat. GED-also asshat. Got a degree while on the job, asshat as well. Young military veteran? Modern military asshat. Older military veteran? Graybeard asshat, past his time. So who is acceptable?
I too am doing a job that I wanted to do from as far back as I can remember. I feel lucky that I have been able to provide for my family and have some fun to boot. This job, and city employment in general is not prefect, far from it. Leadership decisions, bad equipment, pay, retirement and medical benefits that are less than ideal. But one constant during my time has been that we stuck together, thick and thin. A guy needs help, pass the hat. Call a 10-1, roll in lights and siren. See a car making a stop, pull over and make sure its all good, no matter if it's "your" guys or an outside unit. Every badge out there says Chicago Police on it. It doesn't say SOS, TRU, District this or unit that. Back each other up. We are all we have.
We have taken some hits lately, scandals, off duty stuff, from one end of the city to the other, but as you can read on another thread, crime is down. Yea I know all about hiding crime, robberies become thefts, burglaries become CDDP, and other stuff. But police generated revenue is up and murders are down. That means that shorthanded as we are, with all the BS missions and event number generation, we are still doing it. Again, an imperfect organization doing a damn good job.
So get off each others backs, lighten up a bit and have some fun between the nonsense. Life is way too short to be pissed all the time. Part time pissed off is ok.

Not true, The CPD has been working on dividing us for years. Specialized units, treating no juice POs as non-existing. Keep in mind the CPD powers know that it is essential we stay together as a whole to form a power base. As you can see that is not happening insofar as CPD is concerned they won.

Every badge out there says Chicago Police on it. It doesn't say SOS, TRU, District this or unit that.
I agree with this statement, but why does CPD only pay you for 8 hours, but expect you to be the police in the entire city 24/7? I am pretty sure that CPD would rip a new one into a copper that happens to be in another district (for whatever reason) and decides to prevent a crime.
It is SO pitiful that here are so many haters in this dept. So what a person goes to college to get a degree, if dats what they wanted then it's their biz!! Same with the people from the military and any other place that can be listed.
