Protest March Coming

Yes, we got the text messages. Yes, we got the e-mails. The rumor mill is shuddering under the winds of the latest and even the Tribune is picking up on it:
  • Leaders of Chicago's police union are considering taking the growing acrimony over contract negotiations public at a most inopportune time for Mayor Daley -- picketing on the day International Olympic Committee evaluators arrive next week to see the city.

Fraternal Order of Police President Mark Donahue acknowledged that a picket line of cops while Olympic officials are in town April 2-7 is "being discussed," but he said nothing has been decided by the union and declined to comment further.

But multiple police sources familiar with union activities said that an "informational picket" is being planned for next Thursday, the day the IOC's 16-member evaluating commission is scheduled to arrive in Chicago. The sources expected the picketing to take place at City Hall, but the location is among issues still being discussed.
Why one day of pickets? Why not a few days worth? Why not a bus on standby for the "grand tour" and drive ahead of the IOC entourage to conduct "informational pickets" at each and every whistle-stop the convoy makes?

One day of picketing is a mosquito bite to Shortshanks. One week of being alongside his Olympic dream is a festering boil on Daley's ass.

Have the police assigned to the IOC activities give the FOP the schedule of times and locations ahead of time.

Great idea!

0% for this 4 year contract and obviously no retro Daley says. This schmuck has stooped to an all time low. Everybody in this city strikes; we can't because thats the deal we agreed on when we all signed up. Everybody under the son gets raises, decent ones at that EXCEPT the Chicago Police Dept. He's using the hard ecomonic times as an excuse for bitching about our raises. But this has been going on each and every time our contract is up since this idiot has been in office as our Mayor. His reckless spending, his backwards priorities, his skimming and scamming hundreds of millions. Enough is enough. I'll picket everyday I'm able. Everybody should do the same. The F.O.P. should be interviewed by every Chicago news stations. Put signs in your windows at home, put signs in you car windows when you are traveling, have your family, friends and neighbors write and call the aldermans office, the news stations and the papers. We put our lives on the lines everyday, deal with everybody elses bullshit, high stress, no sleep, overworked, always underpaid, faulty outdated equipment, low moral, etc etc etc but we continue to get shit on by Deep Pockets Daley.

I agree with you 100% on following the IOC around town for a few days with picket signs.

Picketing the first day when they arrive and are busy unpacking and having dinner is a waste of time, they won't even know we exist.

We need to send a message, and we need to do it at the most opportune time. Just think... if we don't get the Olympics, Shitshanks will have a big pile of money left over that can go toward our raise!

I hope that you take a stand and just not picket the hall but the whole route. The people of Chicago who support you are waiting to see if you will take the first step to fight for your convictions!

Sneed's Column,

Pothole Pete . . .

It's stranger than fiction! Sneed hears Mayor Daley's car hit a huge pothole Tuesday, which flattened two of his tires!

• • The kicker: The pothole incident occurred shortly after hizzoner apologized to the Chicago public for the behavior of convicted Streets and Sans czar Al Sanchez, who was in charge of plugging the city's potholes!

• • Upshot: It was a Pulaski Avenue pothole, which ruptured the tires while Daley was being driven back to City Hall in his Lincoln Town Car.

I couldn't make this up, folks.

The Mayor needs to answer how they can negotiate in such bad faith.

I have a feeling that we would look like a bunch of bafoons if we were to protest. Our image is the poorest on record after the Cozzi, Abate, Jefferson Tap and SOS scandals which made national and some international news.

While people are losing jobs at record rates, we're going to protest the olympics and draw more criticism?

This protest should be more of a stance on fair bargaining and settling contract issues, not keeping out the olympics. The mayor has not shown any interest in settling our contract in good faith, that is the issue.

We spend half our careers working on expired contracts. The department is shrinking to dangerous levels. Our pension fund is grossly underfunded. Guarantees of free medical coverage and retiree health care all going by the wayside. Those are the issues.

Tentative deal reached on Olympic benefits
March 26, 2009 9:10 AM | 2 Comments
Chicago Olympic planners have reached a tentative agreement over benefits to local communities if the city wins the 2016 Games and launches massive construction projects for the event.

The Chicago 2016 Committee has scheduled a 10 a.m. press conference to announce the proposed agreement.
Community groups that had been wary of the negotiations said they expect most of what they wanted will be included in the proposed agreement, including a guarantee that 30 percent of the housing built for athletes and officials will eventually be refashioned as affordable housing on the South Side.

The agreement is also expected to include guarantees that a significant portion of construction jobs will be reserved for "apprentice" workers, said Jay Travis, executive director of the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization.

Travis' group and others had planned an early morning demonstration outside the Chicago 2016 headquarters at the Aon building this morning, but the tone of the demonstration softened after they received word the agreement includes much of what the groups sought, she said.

A While ago when I was on the job. Shortshanks was puttingoff the contract as usual. It just so happened that duting this time Solidarity Leader Lech Walesa was coming to chicago and meeting with the "little guy" at the Conrad Hilton. The FOP decided to hold an informational Picket in front of the hotel (across the street). Shortpants thought there would be only 150-200 PO's there. Much to his chagrin 2,000 showed up as he pulled in front of the hotel on Michigan Avenue. Not soon after that, you guessed it, Contract in hand. Listen all, STICK TOGETHER, DON'T WAFFLE. THIS GUY HAS NO RESPECT FOR YOU, NEITHER DOES J-FED. DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO GET WAHT IS COMING TO YOU.

Please note there are citizens out there that do care and would like to help beef up the #'s to get your point across. I think it's crap you can't strike...so the next best thing....picketing the IOC!!! Bring it on and please post info. as soon as available!

Check the FOP website. Latest news is about the FLSA lawsuit Posted YESTERDAY. NOTHING about an informational picket. Just what, exactly does this outfit do for $425 from each of us a year??? (Thats about 3.8 million, folks) if there are 9000 dues paying members.

The last time the olympic committee toured Chicago, the city had tact teams at each location to prevent protestors from approaching. I guess that would mean that some tact officers somewhere would know everywhere and the approximate time the committee will tour, well ahead of time. Hmmm!

So there's a RUMOR we are going to protest???? Isn't this supposed to happen like next week?? How in the hell are we going to organize a protest in a week. Typical FOP, pretend you're doing something when in reality you're just bowing down to your master. Why wasn't this already planned a month or so ago when it was first thought of FOP?? Sorry but I can't drop everything at the last minute to attend but would have loved to if I was given more time to rearrange plans. Thank you FOP for selling us out again.

Comment from the comment section in the Tribune. At least some citizens get it.
This article reports that the police are contemplating picketing because of their ire at having worked almost two years without a contract and the Mayor taking a raise off the table. Pretty simplistic. Anybody who works for a living see anything wrong with that? That is only part of what has angered them. The police know what sort of bull puckey eminates from City Hall.In my opinion, they also know how the mayor has manipulated City finances away from core basics to achieve his Olympic dream. They know how the City pleads poverty when negotiating their contract, but money can always be found to fund the mayor's pet projects, which mysteriously seem to enrich his friends. They know about the City's long standing scam of lowball insider contract bids with subsequent rubber stamp cost overrun approvals by the City Council, which will provide a gold mine of opportunity for the "usual suspects" in the unlikely event the Olympic committee picks Chicago as it's 2016 venue. The Police are also aware that they are represented by a "union" which is of questionable value to it's members, are way understaffed, poorly led by many supervisors who hold their position because of clout instead of job skill, and poorly equipped, a situation which calls into question their ability to handle the problems which would arise from Chicago's being an Olympic venue. Peel the onion and look into a few layers below the surface before accusing the police of petulance.

Well the FOP organized it, everyone knew about it, and only about 40 people showed up...

The unnamed source in the Sun Times was absolullutely right. Thou I doubt their afraid of Daley..

Well ladies and gentlemen, the time has arrived for us to either put up or, forever shut up....

The ball is in our side of the court now. We have the situation we have been waiting for, to show once and for all what we are made of, Men of honor and respect, or, pathetic sheep who follow, no matter how much shit this jerkoff mayor puts on our plates to eat.

In case you're not aware of it, this is a battle for our very existance, Shortshanks has drawn a line in the sand and defying us to cross it.

Sadly, he has history on his side, knowing full well we don't stick together for anything, but if we make the effort and totally commit to this, the respect we garner for ourselves and as a group will go a long way to make us feel like men again and not like used fucked over dog meat, which we apparently have grown acustomed too.

We have to dog him and those IOC committee members where ever they go for their entire stay here, doing it for one day only shows we are used to doing things half assed, and richly deserve the shit way we are treated.

As we all know from dealing with the City, words and endless talks go nowhere, the City only understands one thing and one thing only, FORCE.....

On April 2nd, after we greet "our visitors" with a huge welcoming showing, complete with signs and more people then they ever imagined, it would be terribly ironic if 2000 to 3000 P/O's came down with a horrible case of that raging flu bug that seems to be so prevelent.

That's right, "Felony Blue Flu"....

The kind that would rattle Shortshanks to his bone marrow...
The only thing he would understand, he would be studdering and sputtering so badly, they would have issue the IOC raincoats to keep them from drowning in his spit.

I know what you are all thinking about this approach, it's drastic and could be potentially dangerous, but at this point in time we have nothing to lose because arbitration is an almost certainty, meaning another 12 to 18 months of stagnation and resentment on our part, no raises, no more new recruits to replace the many who retire soon, no new cars or equipment desperatly needed to combat the rising storm of the beast who is gaining in strentgh and numbers and becoming more bolder by the day.

I have 30 plus years and will be retiring shortly so my struggle with the City and its BS will end, but you younger officers let this burn it and take heed. Look at yourself in the mirror, and ask yourself, is this what I signed up for, being treated like dirt and being disrespected by the very people who are suppost to have your best interest to heart.

We all will look back and think, THIS was the opportunity we were waiting for and let it slip through fingers.

Just heard on WBBM Radio- ACORN and the "revs" and so forth have now been bought off to forestall them from picketing the IOC visit; they've "signed off" with the city on their "share" of the 2016 Olympics.

As usual, this is being presented as only right and proper for "underserved" areas of the city -- when anyone can sit down with a map and phone book and demonstrate how government spending, social services, public housing, food give-aways, etc. are almost exclusively concentrated in black and Hispanic areas to begin with.

Screw these people. Everyone else go right ahead and demonstrate against Daley's 2016 games. No "movin' on up" Olympic Village apartment-in-the-sky in store for us -- just endless, bottomless debt and tax increases.

The "revs?" Ha. Get this.

Baptist preacher runs again for office he bilked

By ROSE FRENCH
Associated Press Writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The ousted former president of a national organization of black Baptist churches is running for the position again, a decade after he was sent to prison for stealing millions of dollars from the group. The Rev. Henry J. Lyons was forced out as leader of the National Baptist Convention USA in 1999 after an investigation revealed he abused his power in the convention to steal about $4 million. He used the money to buy luxury homes and jewelry, and to support his mistresses.

TO THE POSTER AT 06:24 PM - What are you talking about? How is protesting bringing embarrasment to us? It does not matter what the media, or the citizens think. An informational protest is our right and it will put a huge boil on Shortshank's ass.

Do not be a coward. Stand up and piss the mayor off. Let the citizens know that the overwhelming majority of us ARE the good guys and we deserve a better contract as compensation for dealing with all the crap we have to deal with.

My view is that if we can get at least 1,000 cops there, 2-3 thousands would be great, Mayor Shortshanks, and his little pet dog J-Fed, will be put on notice.

FOP show some leadership. As a matter of fact, Donahue and other FOP officers, if you can pull this off you won't have to worry about the next elections.

Related to concerns about the on-duty police, the blue shirts were scarcely seen the last time we did this. Nothing but white shirts and nitwits wearing their scramble egg hats. Even some of the sgts were not sure what to do.

WHITE SHIRTS (Capts, Lts, Sgts) Just remember that you are in this with us. Your pay raise is exactly going to be the same as ours according to your fearless mayor. Don't let City Hall try to divide and conguer us.

But if ALL of us show up, they certainly can't send us all to mids. Get the ball rolling in your districts and on all the watches, please.

3/26/2009 11:32:00 AM

You want the retirees to get off their ass and help you? Well I will tell you, the Conrad Hilton is very familiar to a lot of us. Once in 1968 and the time we picketed when Lech Walesa was there with shortshanks. You were just a youngster then. Neither time we did not know what would happen to us, but we went. You see there were no unions before us, so this was new territory for the police to picket. As far as the Fire Union, well we did not do much to help them out during there problems, but I can't remember (old guy) what the status of FOP was then. I don't think too much if anything. I was hoping to see a stronger FOP by now but I guess not. Maybe that was our fault, I don't know and if is was I am sorry. But it is yours to fix. We all felt reprisals back then too. Be strong, stay together, don't let those bastards get you down. If I can get there (depends on my health at the time) I will love to help you guys. Either way it's still up to you.

I WILL BE THERE FOR SURE!!! EVEN IF IT MEANS I HAVE TO BURN A P-DAY!

3/27/2009 05:07:00 AM

I AM burning a P-Day and others in my district who have little time on the books and sick relatives, sick wives, kids in school etc. are also burning time.

Brothers & Sisters, whatever disagreemtns you may have with others and the FOP, ON THIS WE MUST BE UNITED, STAND TOGETHER, STAND UNITED AND STAND FIRM.

And to younger officers, COME OUT AND JOIN US ALL IN PROTECTING ALL OUR RIGHTS AND FUTURE!!!

Sow the Mayor, the news media and the IOC how deeply we care about this issue, THIS IS OUR CITY, WE CARE ABOUT IT OR ELSE WE WOULDN'T BE POLICE OFFICERS.

Come downtown on April 2, join the blue line and I hope we see many Sgt's, Lt's and Captains too.

Unit Rep in 019 got a CR# for sending info on the picketing around via PDT. Be careful what you put in those PDT's. I guess someone didn't like union info going over the PDT's.

Question: are all of the unions going to be there? FOP, PBPA
Is Donahue and his crew marching, along with the presidents of Sgts, Lts. And Capts union. I bet not.

It would be great to get the firefighters to join us, along with all the laid off city workers.

I say create a traffic jam around city hall, with PO's drivng thier cars, no horns or sirens or whistles, just alot of cars and cycles. gridlock the traffic so people will stop and pay attention to us. I'm a Sergeant with 34 yrs on this job, with a few years left. I pity the years to come for the young officers if we don't act now. I would hope that FOP reats to this contract nonsense, letting the public know that our contracts expired 2 years ago in good economic times , but where is all the back pay money lying. Now is the time to show the mayor just what BALLS WE DO HAVE and that we do our jobs everyday.

"You liberals with your protests and unions! Love it or leave it!

Actually, protesting and unionizing are conservative activities.

Unless you believe that our Founding Fathers were liberals.

"it would be terribly ironic if 2000 to 3000 P/O's came down with a horrible case of that raging flu bug that seems to be so prevelent"

It's illegal and immoral for police and fire to have the blue flu or "strike"- what would be terribly ironic is if one of our family memebers couldn't get help or one of our own couldn't get back up and was hurt or killed as a result.

You sir- are a dumbass jagoff. Retire or turn in your badge.

When we protested in Grant park we had huge numbers and a contract was signed fairly quickly-the international embarrassment to Daley was huge.

Do it again!
