- Mayor Daley is seething over a West Side legislator’s suggestion that children be educated about gun safety and gun use.
State Rep. Annazette Collins (D-Chicago) said she believes that education is the key to gun safety, and said a hands-on approach is the key to taking away the mystery and allure of guns.
“Downstate they teach you that guns are meant for hunting, for protection,” she said. “Here in the urban cities, all they see are guns on TV and they gun down people.”
Opponents filled a town hall meeting Monday night in Garfield Park, and Mayor Daley is adding his voice to the outrage.
“It’s the silliest position I’ve ever heard taken,” Daley said.
No, the silliest position is Illinois and Wisconsin being the last of the 50 states to legalize some form of concealed carry that has been proven time and time again to reduce violent crime.
But actually educating people, young people, as to basic safety principles regarding something that, despite all Shortshank's attempts to ban it, still manages to pop up with astonishing frequency. Notice how Daley twists the issue to his own anti-gun views:

Collins, of course, didn't say she wanted to put guns in anyone's hands or even more guns in a City that already bans them. She isn't advocating teaching these kids marksmanship, arming them, and sending them out to kill. But being aware of when a gun is loaded (always), what it's capable of (holes in paper, walls, people), and what they should do when they see one (tell the police) isn't a bad idea.

Not to mention, teaching kids that when you shoot a gun, it's permanent. You don't get more lives and a nifty musical tone. Dead means dead.
I once arrested a kid who was crying, begging his victim to 'get up, just get up'. The bullet hole had kind of sealed itself and there was no blood, just a kid laying in the living room. Bleeding to death internally.
I'm thinking maybe a little gun safety education isn't a bad thing. And a LOT of gun education might be a BETTER thing.
Firearms education is the key to gun control. Easier said than done because chicago has a problem with education.

The liberals get frightened and the thought of addressing gun safety issues, guns is a reality in many Chicago neighborhoods. The children have very good odds of finding a gun that was discarded by someone running from the police or someone hiding it to be avilable to them when needed (gangbangers). I remember when I got my merit badge for marksmanship. We shot .22 rifles in the basement range at the La Grange P.D.
It was the single most awesome experience as a child that I can remember.
We were instructed properly in firearm safety, and learned it, or else no badge.
It's the little things that stick with a kid.

Both of my sons attended hunter safety classes (Outside of Chicago of course). During the class, the instructor lined up all the kids, handed them an empty pistol, and asked them to look at it and pass it on. They all did without hesitation. Then he set a mouse trap and handed it to them to look at and pass it. They all handled it with extreme care. When it got back to him, he placed his finger in the trap and snapped it. Then told the kids, this will only sting your finger and you handled it with extreme caution. Then in a stern voice he said, but none of you exercised that same caution when handling a gun, and if that goes off, it can kill you. Then he just stared at them. You could hear a pin drop. I was followed up later that day with a shotgun blast to a gallon of water, which ultimately disappeared. That was a lasting impression. My father is a retired CPD and I was taught at a young age about gun safety, as were my boys. I believe that if you teach children about gun safety at a young age, it can be a deterrent. Just my opinion. Sorry, but Daley is wrong on this one.

When I was is in grade school we had a Chicago Police Officer come and teach us about gun safety. There was a film (Reel to reel) and he was blunt and honest. Granted their were a lot of Police Officers kids there but everyone listened and I think it made an impact - I know it id for me. Also was shown a film showing the effects of drug abuse and this guy going through withdrawal - it was disgusting !!! But again made an impact. I am guessing there is no man power for this, no more Officer Friendly, but when I taught Jr High I was wishing they still had that program.

off topic. there appears to be a new pilot program in Area 2 in which a midnight watch commander covers two districts. one district per night has no w/c. arrests are approved by the w/c of the neighboring district. this is a plan to save money according to one person above the rank of p.o. also, past couple of days 005 had no midnight desk sergeant--sergeant comes in from the street to handle desk duties. if this can work in Area 2, the other areas will follow.

The cleaning crew were scrubbing everything down while donning masks and two pairs of protective gloves last week.
The reason:
Apparently one of the POD watchers (they have been thrown out of OEMC and now have an office at the Academy) has MRSA.
So, if you plan on using the facilities at the Academy, bring your own cleaning supplies to wipe everything down before you workout.

Little Dick Shortshanks is an idiot, boys and girls.
When my children were 6 and 8 years of age, I took them to the range with a child-sized .22 rifle. The first thing I did was shoot two cantaloupes that were about the size of their heads. After we examined them and I explained that bullets don't care who or what they hit, my daughters knew that real guns weren't toys or video games. They both became pretty good shots and responsible firearms users.
At the time, their teachers were somewhat horrified when they reported back to their classes how they spent their "family" weekend.
My younger daughter, the unmarried one, has her own 9mm KelTec P11 for concealed carry.

Yes, B.S.A still offers Merit Badges for Rifle and Shotgun as well as archery.
Firearms education may be MORE practical than most of the readin, riding, and ridmatic they are now receiving. If they know basic firearms safety, it may save their lives.
We are seeing a real push by the people in power to disarmed the citizen. Gun Violence, in which innocent people are killed, is the perfect vehicle to promote this to the public. Less Guns,is Sure to mean Less Killings. It's already very difficult to get ammunition.
The people in power are not quite ready to go after the 2nd amendment yet, but they soon will be.

It doesn't matter what you try to teach them, they won't learn it. They view doing well in school as not cool or hip or thug like. It's cool to be a thug and dumb, so maybe someday they can grow up to be a rap star or gang leader. We could give them the best teachers and equipment in the world and they would just destroy or kill it. Being an urban thug is what's hip! If we did teach them gun safety they would ignore it and then go home and watch a rap video to see how to handle a gun.
1 dead, one injured in Miami Burger King shooting

One man was killed and another seriously wounded in a shootout inside a Miami Burger King on Tuesday, officials said.
Police said a man wearing a ski mask walked into the store at Biscayne Boulevard and 54th Street and demanded money from a clerk.
A customer, who has a concealed weapons permit, pulled a gun, said Officer Jeff Giordano, a Miami police spokesman.
The customer and robber exchanged fire.
The robber was shot dead at the scene.
The customer, who had several gunshot wounds, was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in serious but stable condition, said Lt. Ignatius Carroll, a Miami Fire Rescue spokesman.
