Shaved has this up on behalf of Sgt. Northen. We'll summarize it here, but the full text and particulars are over at Shaved's site:
- Many unnamed persons have forwarded an eMail to me in which the first line reads: "The Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the City of Chicago is accused of cowardice by a man once regarded as the department's chief LUNATIC." (CAPS mine)
Trust me. It's NOT a bruised ego. In recent days, I have contacted editors of newspapers as well as the producers of local electronic media to expose this COWARD for what he truly is. While I believe that essentially local media is in the hip pocket of Mayor Richard M. Daley, media has declined covering the story any further using the unspoken pretext that I am INSANE. In effect, those who have circulated this trash may well have "cut their own throats" if they believe that Weis should resign or be fired.
I herein offer a reward of $10,000.00 to the first person who contacts me with information that would result in a conclusion that I am clinically insane. I'm not. Far from it. As some have said, Northen is "as crazy as a fox." I will never know if libelous rumors influenced local media to not pursue the story of a COWARD who is also "top cop".
Consider me highly litigious and unamused by the author of "lunatic" as well as those who have circulated this false statement. I deleted it once I read it. I thought the same thing; don't tar and feather the one guy who has stepped up and pulled back the curtain on the ongoing charade. He can't be demoted or reassigned, so he has more freedom than most to tell the truth about what's going on.
Whatever one's personal opinion might be of Northen, it should stay 'personal'. He is retired CPD and can string more than two sentences together to make our plight clear to the media. By trashing him, you negate him. By negating him, you silence the one person who has the media's ear.
It was just a really dumb move.

No shit John! YOU went against King Daley by insulting one of his “Chosen”! His lackeys don’t like it when you do that. They will try to de-bunk you and what you say as “nuts”.
Look at what King Richard said about Maurer when he left the airport. Didn’t the King say that Maurer was “Disgruntled”? Did anyone print any feed back from Maurer? Oh HELL no!
The media will try to pull up shit about you being a “lunatic”, a “trouble maker”, “disgruntled”… and then leave it at that. After all, they (the media) WILL have the last say!
“Prove that I’m nuts” you say?... Prove to the Media that you’re not! Slightly harder than it looks, especially when THEY control what is printed. Well, in their rags, at least. Just like the City; it’s not about the “Proof”, it’s about the “Perception”! It’s the Media, when have you known them to play fair or print the truth?

I think once you impose yourself on the media, with whatever level of identification you choose, you become a public figure and lose you bid as a private citizen and then subject yourself to public criticism. File a suit Sgt., and I hope your defendant doesn't cite Times vs. Sullivan, "public figures can be criticized" and then its up to you to prove malice.
Northen has a great reputation. I can't think of any cop who made so many felony arrests. We can't speak out and ID ourselves so he's speaking for us. All he is doing is trying to help us get rid of this jerk. $1000 is a small price to pay to protect your honor from no name snipers. People who don't have self esteem like putting others down behind their back. Just like J-Fled, they call them cowards.

By public figures, I think they mean anyone who's job keeps them in the public eye, ie: politicians, actors.
Making a public statement or making a stand on an issue may throw you into the public arena for a while but that never lasts.

I worked with John when we were dicks in the old Maxwell street area 4 and then at Harrison and Kedzie. He was a very good detective, very smart. He was funny and bold. He pissed the city off because he was so vocal about the '87 rigged lieutenant's test ( a test that the BGA and channel 5 documented as manipulated). He was never afraid to challenge authority when authority was corrupt or incompetent, which was plenty of the times. I do not agree with some of the things he has done, but who cares? His intentions have always been good. Calling him names is just the power structures way of minimizing his statements.I wish that I had the energy to go after the city the way he does.
This is the same way they smeared Blogo. They repeatedly called him crazy.
We need more retirees to join John in this battle. We can't speak up, but you guys can!
I have seen these comments before, what's up with the W/C in 023 on 3rd watch,Lt's, Sgt's and PO's all leaving the watch? Why? I thought this was a good district to work in. I heard guys with time would rather work midnights than afternoons if they had to work for this Capt. ?
When I'm retired, I could give a rat's ass if the Chicago Police Superintendent was caught smoking rocks with a tranny prostitute in his marked squad parked right in front of City Hall. I would just laugh and then see what movies were playing that afternoon.
This job is similar to scraping the grime off the underbelly of a sewer system. There is life above the sewers. When your done scrapping the grime, climb up there and enjoy it.
Don't spend all your free time discussing the various kinds of grime and procedures for scrapping. And for God's sake, when your retired, never ever ever ever climb back down into the sewer to discuss grime scrapping.
Those who make this job their life, won't ever have much of one.
Of course Northen's insane. We all are for wanting to become police in Chicago in the first place. But it's been a hell of a fun ride. Let the good times roll!

Bill was always among the first units to respond to 10-1's and dangerous "in progress" calls. Justice cries out that Bill trade places with THE COWARD.

The perp would be someone who knows Northside from years ago. The current group of adoring fans has no knowledge of why someone would write that. Those who know him do.
Well, I know of one retired copper who thought John was a little nuts for taking that fatefull stroll through Fillmore when he was a young man many, many years ago...
Enough is Enough of this already, there are far more serious issues going on in Chicago.. We've never had a Supt. of Police who was General Patton, although, in his dreams, Mauer thought he was both. Let it go already, it's already ancient history.

Hey "Big" John Howell, why bother with an interview when you have already made up your mind? To truly play the scumbaggery game of false journalism in Chicago, you need to learn not to telegraph yourself so blatantly. I'm sure you'll eventually master being subtle when your sucking off high-placed city government types and you will soon overtake Roe Conn.

You know who I am. Anyone who knows you holds you in the highest admiration and respect as both a great cop and a down to earth gentleman. Chicago politicians and media are hopelessly corrupt. Principles are meaningless to these shameless mother fuckers. You are a genius (you deny it) with the tenacity of a pit bull yet some see you as a modern Don Quixote. We all know that Weis is a coward unable to gain respect or lead. Daley is a teflon crook. If you investigated his crimes, he would be in prison a long time ago.
If any cop can bring about true reform, its you and your passion. You always were a free soul that loves fun and knows how to enjoy life. As you used to say work hard, play hard. I don't know you, I've never met you, but as a newer PO, I do respect you for trying to help us out. You could just as easily walk away and leave us behind, but you didn't.....I wish that that kind of loyalty and comraderie still existed on this job today. If nothing else, sir, remember this. Compare the WIND interviews of Northen and J-Fled. Obviously, this Howell guy was J-Fled's mouthpiece trying to trick John with the "cars already on the scene" of the unsolved murder and his "grandstanding" crap. John handled the interview perfectly and put the babbling idiot to shame. Amy Jacobson came across impartial and even sympathetic to our plight with 'shanks and his puppet J-Fled. If I recall, John was going to do a second interview but canceled. Wise move on his part, He would have given Howell another chance to set him up with words straight from J-Fled's office.
Then J-Fled talks about he would only listen to somebody who has "skin in the game". Anybody that is still on the job to come forward like John would have to be a lunatic since he must support a family and J-Fled could destroy his career. Northen was locking up murderers, robbers and rapists when J-Fled was wetting his bed.
Then J-Fled slips up at the end saying he's surprised that nobody called him a coward before.
We need a big crew of retired cops to join John. They should march around the Tribune and Sun Times with J-Fled COWARD signs and their retired stars hanging around their neck.
I sent a birthday card to Bill Cozzi yesterday. Since when can a coward put a good cop who admitted making a small harmless mistake in prison for 4 years.

I have to admit that I do not know Northside but I know people who did "back in the day". I have not read the e-mail in question. Lunatic is a strong description, but slanderous, I would say that is a reach. Northside ... I have heard one the things that you did like to do is try to think up ways to sue the department. I am sorry that you feel that you were wronged during your career. I admire your candor in relation to certain issues, but some are and have been ill advised. I listened to you on the John and Amy show and do not share the popular view here on the "blog". I felt that you did sound like some one who had an axe to grind. I am not a Weis fan and personally do not want him on any crime scene. As he rightfully said on a followup interview with John and Amy that he would be a distraction, I would have to agree. Let the police be the police and let him go do whatever he does. You have made yourself a public figure, now open to scrutiny, you are the figure you have created subject to the same types of criticism that you heap on others. Get used to it. Accept it. Weis will leave and another will take his place. I have been on this job for a while and have served under six superitendents. All have shared the same types of criticisms that you relish in. Phil Cline "Fat Phil" as he has been characterized on the blog by far has done the most for the rank and file, but yet he gets slammed. Almost a million dollars in aid to officers in need as a result of the CPMF, and yet he is slammed. It was under his tenure that Cozzi was disciplined. Of course he did not bring the federal charges but did discipline Bill for his mistake. I fear the next superintendent will not be the police either. We need change, not just in the police department but government as well. Daley will run and Daley will win and we will be back on the "Blog" saying how bad he is. So Northside I would like to offer this challenge to you to truly make a difference. Announce yourself as a canidate for Mayor. Fight the fight. Make a real difference.
