Violent Crime Rising?
As the exchange student and her 24-year-old friend were returning to the friend's Bucktown neighborhood home early Friday after a night out celebrating, they were attacked from behind and struck on the back of their heads by a robber wielding a baseball bat, police said.
The attacker escaped with their purses, but one woman was able to give police a description of him before she fell unconscious, police [...] said. There could have been a second attacker, police said.
The student was listed in critical condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center on Friday, while her friend, a financial adviser, was listed in serious condition at the same hospital, a spokeswoman said.
A man jogging on the Chicago Riverwalk this morning was critically stabbed just east of the Michigan Avenue bridge, officials said.
About 5:52 a.m., a person called 911 and said a man was stabbed on the riverfront jogging path about 50 feet east of the bridge, said Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
The man, a 63-year-old, was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with multiple stab wounds, according to police and fire officials.
What truly matters is the perception of crime - the appearance that certain areas of the city are safe, inviolate, protected.
And when you think of it, this is running hand-in-hand with J-Fled's recent implementation of the perception of more police on the streets than their actually are.
AND (we're on a roll here), with Shortshanks' fascination with blue-light cameras that assist in the perception that everything is being watched all the time by the police.
The trouble with perception though, is when it runs into cold hard reality - that there aren't enough police to watch formerly safe neighborhoods, that seeing squad car lights doesn't mean there are cops only a short ride away, that no one is watching the cameras and probably 33% of them don't even work properly. Expect more headlines.

Jfed just announced the new anti-violence strategy. We will Wolf pack with our blue lights on while being direct by a super computer connected to gps enabled pod cameras. All the while, playing a loud speaker announcement of Masters saying "knock it off". We will all qualify for a new award ribbon every 30 days.
A couple more incidents along these lines and Shortshanks won't have to worry about throwing his has into the ring for the next election. The riverwalk at 0600 or a moderately edgy gentrified neighborhood at 0330 aren't quite enough to turn off the tourist dollars, but we're one gang shooting on Michigan Ave. away from seeing tourists look for "safer" places to spend their money.
The problem that Daley has is that he has given people the perception of safety -- so tourists jog along lower Wacker at 6am and young women wander around the streets at 3am. That perception bubble is bursting and with it will be dollars into the city's coffers.
Things are going to continue to get out of hand. That is the direction this city is moving in, I just hope it can all hold together until I can move out!

One of the reasons that Daley felt he could reduce the size of the CPD is because the most serious violent crimes are being perpetrated against "victims" of questionable repute (aka other criminals and vicious gang bangers in their own right). Few decent citizens really care too much about that, other than to give a passing "tsk, tsk! Isn't it awful that those people are being shot?" or "it's terrible that that innocent 20 month old child was shot".
Even with that, Daley usually can say something like "why is a 20 month old child out on the streets at 2 in the morning? That child should be safe at home sleeping in her bed at 9 PM". And, of course, to the law abiding, non-savage community out there, he is right and they will agree with him.
Once in a while the revruns know they HAVE TO SAY SOMETHING, so they hold a little march or rally with 10 or 15 people and demand the media show up and the cameras shoot the "crowd" from such an angle that they appear to be dozens of marchers and they DEMAND that the Mayor and the police do something to stop the violence. So J-Fled goes on TV and says "That's awful" and "Our new summer program will stop this violence cuz we're gonna tell 'em to knock it off!"
But NOW, crime is visiting the tax-paying communities, and that WILL NEVER BE ACCEPTABLE TO THE VOTERS.

Last month there was a mope in 014 going around punching woman in the face and trying to rob them of their purses, maybe the guy was given an I-bond and is now using a bat and approaching from behind.
Last night at @ 0330 2 F/white held up at gunpoint by M/black with .32 cal revolver in 10400-10500 block of Talman Ave.. Purses and cell phones taken. This took place in a neighborhood with one of the highest populations of police officers as residents. The animals have taken over and also know that the beat cars are rarely deployed west of Western Avenue. Welcome to the new Detroit.

Two state representatives called on Gov. Pat Quinn to deploy the Illinois National Guard on Chicago's streets to combat violence.
State Reps. John Fritchey (D-Chicago) and LaShawn Ford (D-Chicago) held a press conference today saying they want Quinn, Mayor Richard Daley and Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis to work with guardsmen to help get guns and criminals off the streets. Weis has previously said he did not think it was a feasible idea.
"I hope this doesn't become a territorial issue. I hope this doesn't become an ego issue," Fritchey said. "This isn't about public relations or politics. This is about reclaiming our communities."

Great Idea! I traveled this nation for 12 years as a service tech. I used to call where ever I went and ask them about the neighborhood, and my personal safety. Some thought it silly, others, understood perfectly. A lot of plants are in shitty areas. Wish all cities had something like that.
