In his last day on the job, Chicago’s longest-serving black alderman on Tuesday urged whoever wins the race for mayor to retain embattled Police Supt. Jody Weis.
“Morale is at rock-bottom because people don’t like it because he puts them out there, kicks them in the rear end and makes them do their job,” said Ald. Ed Smith (28th).
“I don’t think that, just because police are upset, it’s enough to get this man out of here. The man needs to stay in his position, let the police do their job and those [who] do not want to work, let them find another job.”
No asshat, morale is at rock bottom because this asshole, the asshole mayor and your asshole compatriots, have gutted this Department to the bone. In case you hadn't noticed Ed, there aren't any cops on the street. We haven't seen a rapid response car up in months. We can't get time off for some reason for our kids' birthdays. But there sure seem to be an extra lot of gold stars running around, "commanding" units that were previously run by lieutenants and sergeants. And don't even get us started on staffing the front offices.

Hey, Ed - I took your 'advice'. I retired. And so did a couple hundred others who worked, did our jobs, showed up and never used the medical in the last couple of decades. Your loss.

Jody has done some very good things while he has been here. Some of the programs he has kept in place and new ones he started are not bad. But don't start thinking he actually knows what he's doing because I don't believe he has got the management ability to run CPD. Don't get me started on "He has our backs" because he doesn't. I don't think I've met even 1 PO that thinks the department will back them if push comes to shove. He has gone out of his way to screw quite a few of us. Ed Smith and Jody Weis won't be missed after they are gone.

If you work in 011 or used to in the past you remember how much of a headache and apin in the ass the liquor stores at lake and pulaki were when they were open. Well ed smith just last week helped a store get its liquor license and its going to open up on the corner where the old one used to be. Should be a pain in the ass again. I wonder if we will have to have a second wagon assigned to just sit at that corrner like back in the day.

There have been rumblings and whispers ever since it came out about Ike Carothers wearing a wire.
Apparently, if these aldermen have retired and started drawing their pension, it CANNOT be taken away from them, even if they are indicted for crimes committed as an alderman and using their office to commit those crimes. Those are the safeguards they've wrapped themselves in to carry on with their corruption as usual at City Hall. Once they are indicted, though, all bets are off regarding the pension.
Several aldermen have announced their retirements. Rugai, Shiller and Smith were all on Carothers' Police & Fire Committee, which has raised speculation that they may all be bailing to grab that pension before the Feds come in and take them out of City Hall in handcuffs.
I'd hate to see them be able to collect a pension while sitting in the joint, but I sure would love to hear that they'll be getting indicted!

Please do it. He is well over the 1 year mark that forces officers to return to work or be forced off. He is on an LOA.
Exactly what we said would happen: they had a meeting to ask fro FOPs help in some movement among POWs at call back and the Feds move to giver tham 30 pending. If that does happen I think that this should be cause for legal action . They are basically telling union, shut up or we fire em all. They tried that with light duty people too.

For the record, I contacted the office of Ald. Ed Smith and e-mailed a copy of this thread with my 1:25 AM offer to both EHSmith@CityofChicago.org, J-Fled, Fran Spielman, my old friend Mike Sneed, Amy Jacobson and other media, as well as SCC and Shaved.
I have yet to receive any response. Since J-Fled is a COWARD, I will not hold my breath waiting for a reply.
