Where the Money Is; Where the Cops Aren't

  • Two men were charged in connection with the armed robberies of two Bakers Square restaurants, including one that was held up Sunday night on the Far North Side, according to Chicago police.

Eugene Wright, 37, of the 6300 block of South Sangamon Street, and Michael Morgan, 27, of the 10600 block of South Racine Avenue, were each charged with felony armed robbery in the holdups, police said.

Bail was set at $400,000 each for Wright and Morgan when they appeared for their bond hearing on the charges today before Cook County Criminal Court Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil.

Let's look at those offenders' addresses again, shall we?
  • 6300 block of South Sangamon Street
  • 10600 block of South Racine Avenue
And the locations of the robberies?
  • 7131 N. Western
  • 5220 N. Harlem Avenue
Golly. Who would have thought it? Take police away (or short district manpower) in one location to fill another and guess what happens? The criminals go to where the police aren't!

So if we're in our 24th straight month of crime reduction, why are we seeing this phenomenon? And why are we still going to strip low-crime districts of exactly what keeps them low-crime and give it over to the leeches?

And as an added bonus:
  • Wright and Morgan, who each have at least one armed robbery conviction in their criminal backgrounds, are currently under investigation for similar crimes, police said.
Whose doorstep can we lay this one on? Quinn, Blago, Anita or the courts?

A Baker's Square in Alsip was also robbed this month, same MO.

One of the comments on chicagobreakingnews.com actually wondered why these animals went all the way to the other side of the city.

I live close to Harlem/Foster, it used to be you never saw ghetto types up there, now it is a common sight. At least the Harwood Heights and Norridge PDs take a proactive approach in dealing with them.

Call me a racist, but it is the truth, we didn't see shit like this up here when I was a kid and there was no L at Harlem. The animal confined his rapin' & robbin' to his own area.

Too bad the assholes didn't give 024 tact a reason to empty their magazines.

Nope. Except for the family this will go away. You won't see front page articles on this one. Why? Because the police did their job. They were called to the aunts house on Christmas Eve and he got locked up on the warrant.

BUT the courts let him out on bail the next day!!

"Why do you rob banks?"

"That's where the money is." Willie Sutton 1901-1980, well known bank robber of an earlier era.

Another factor, district cops and all those "special units' in the ghetto areas are too concerned with the nickel bag, 50 ye4ars old DPWs and quality of life "get the number up" arrests that take up much of their time.

Recently, a Predictive Analysis Unit handheld device (Serial #2010-5533PAU-04) was stolen from headquarters and is thought to be in the hands of the criminal element. (Based on our astute observation of increased criminal activity in the NW side.)

We are asking for all field units' help in locating this tablet device.

It looks like an ordinary Blackberry Playbook (tablet) but has been modified to incorporate dual-processing AMD chips that can handle both GPS and quadra-graphic street compass points simultaneously (4 times the processing power of a standard Playbook plus HD).

It is not known exactly when this device was stolen, but it had on it the latest Analytics software package from Carnegie-Mellon and a micro-version of the Master Street Address Guide (MSAG) data base.

We assume what they have done is to use the software in reverse polarity for their own operational efficiency and pinpoint-attacks on businesses and citizens where there is no multiple crime history and therefore no units (limited units) within districts.

We cannot predict how this will effect our own internal predictive skills and status reports because they are using our device in diametric opposition to our own software predicability tables and crime algorithms.

In other words, they have used the stolen unit to do their own selection process of unprotected districts as well as Bears playoff scoring predictions.

Ain't dat a Bitch?!

016 is quickly going to shit. The criminals know that 016 is a big district and by the time the squad car arrives, they will be long gone and they know we are short. They also know that officers from slow districts will be shipped to more crime ridden districts and thus they know 016, 019, 020, etc.... is the place to be.

Not to piss in anyones punch bowl but I have seen 3 comments already saying nice pinch by 024 Tact. I hope 024 Tact isn't going to take credit for both arrests? I know for a fact that an Area 3 gun team car caught one of the offenders. 024 Tact caught the other offender and did a great job calling it out over the radio (little bird whispered the info to me). Please give credit where credit is do. Nice pinch by all in involved!!!

I live Northwest and work South. I can't toot my own horn on this. Just want to make sure those involved are recognized.

Area 5 Districts like 016 and 017 are dreadfully shorthanded and Area 3 other than 018 are ghost towns when it comes to the patrol division. That really is disgraceful when Area 2 is an occupied country. The city will never learn that extra police don't help in the ghetto. Never has and never will. Just keeps the arrest stats up.

Most Americans suffer from "Normalcy Bias" They never think that something bad can happen until it does just because it has never happened before. September 11th 2001 is one example or Columbine H.S. 1999. 2011 is going to be much worse than people expect. Save your money because food prices are going to go up and so is gas at almost $5 a gallon. Home values will decline by 22%. There are going to be riots across major cities. And who knows what type of terrorist attacks are being planned. Our dollar will not be the the worlds currency anymore and this current administration is weakening our missile defense. The shit is going to hit the fan so be prepared for it.

A couple of armed robberies doesn't make a citywide pattern any more than a hot spell somewhere means global warming is true or a cold spell somewhere means it's untrue.

Criminals generally are crimes of opportunity type scum who operate in or near wherever they are "stay"ing.

These two are apparently a bit more ambitious than your average criminal. Hopefully their ambition will cost them about 20 years as guests of the state; although, as an earlier commenter said it is sad that they didn't choose to die in a blaze of outgunned stupidity.

Rob some independent restaurant somewhere and you might get met with an armed owner. Possibly a short Greek guy who fought the commies at home and moved here to wash dishes and moved up the ladder. That type of guy isn't going to hand over any money without lead flying.

These two "jeniuses" might have figured a chain restaurant was a safer target. Or not.

If you really want to affect crime in the mid to long term the answer is birth control, forced adoptions, changes in overall welfare policy, treating drugs as a public health and not criminal issue and draconian measures to stop illegal immigration. The idea that there are jobs native Americans won't do is bullshit.

Exactly! Criminals follow the money and the soft targets. Been seeing that in Lakeview for awhile now. In the mid to late 90s, yeah the gays had to worry about the occasional basher, but mugging seemed rare.

After the area started getting more Lincoln park Trixie types in 2000+ walking home alone drunk from the bars, muggings and sexual assaults seemed to have ticked up.

You don't rob people with no money. You rob people with money, no common sense, and won't fight back. Then you hop on the red line and go back home.

It's gotten worse now that they figured out that that area's festivals and streets are open season for loitering and public drinking(festivals). Case in point was the 10-1 in beginning of November in 23.

This city will be up for grabs under the new Mayor unless he figures out he needs to damn the budget and keep order first and foremost. Otherwise, it'll be rich flight to the suburbs all over again.

Chicago taxpayers and the cops on the beat are being used as tools.

We're gonna let these guys right back out on the street because the jails are overcrowded with pot smokers, DUI's, speeders, hookers, the new mandatory weapon violations laws etc..

Hey we can't afford it right? We can't afford to keep them locked up.

We're short manpower. Use the crisis and don't let it go to waste.

Oh no..You can play the victims at city hall and get more tax money from this Mr. Mayor!

We're not gonna let this crisis go to waste, NO.

We need to save money by putting these people either on probation or on home confinement -- and we know how that worked with our fallen evidence technician recently.

Ahhh yes..and we will not let that crisis go to waste when they are back on the streets either as we can use it to extort more tax money so we can put more cops on the beat.

How you gonna convince the public to pay higher taxes unless there's fear. You have to create the fear to get the money. Let 'em out -- let 'em go..

How about raising the parking fee's to $10/hour? You have the crisis to justify it. Tow some more cars -- create more reasons to confiscate owners cars and hold them as hostage. How about you don't have your seat belt on we'll tow you. URT can damage your car in the process and tell you to pound sand and there ain't nothing that you can do.

It's a self-serving process to let the perp's back on the street. We can use it to justify more bodyguards and drivers for public officials. Let 'em out - they didn't mean it! Let 'em out -- create the crisis and use it.

Chicagoan's being played as tools by the politicians. Which is worse getting jacked-up on the street or getting jacked by the politicians. I wonder sometimes.

Stick-up men have been traveling from the inner city to middle class areas since I came on the job in the late 60's. Nothing new here. However, most of the inner city mopes confine their trade to people in the same area. Only time will tell if the robberies increase. I really do not think that the lowlifes are paying much attention to the fact police manpower is going to shift. There have been two studies done in the US, one in St. Louis, where all police patrols were taken out of areas and the cars only went into to answer calls and a similar crime area wherewhich was flooded with cars. No increase in crime was found in the either area. Hence, the patrols or lack there of made little difference. The real story here, is the mopes are more mobile and city is becoming more integrated and blacks just account for the greater portion of robberies. Always have.

You should have seen all of the discarded rolls and apples and cheese and milk -- in brand-new "Mayor Daley" nylon backpacks -- up at Hiawatha Park some time back.

Real "food desert" up there.

As real estate continues to melt down...

The foreclosure crisis in the City of Chicago impacts not only the market for single family homes, but also the market for affordable rental housing. In Cook County, declining access to affordable rental housing has a been
a critical concern for a number of years. In 2005, 42 percent of the rental housing stock in Cook County was considered to be affordable. This was a sharp reduction from previous years. Between 1990 and 2005, Cook
County’s supply of affordable rental housing decreased by an average of 9,000 units each year. This decline was due to factors such as condominium conversions, demolition, or previously affordable units increasing
rents to market rate. Although the demand for affordable rental housing in Cook County has also declined in recent years, this decline has not been as sharp as the decrease in supply. In 2000 it was estimated that the demand for affordable rental housing in Cook County exceeded the supply by roughly 34,000 units. By 2005,
this imbalance had increased to 114,000 units. In addition to these trends, rising levels of foreclosures are adding stress to the already strained affordable rental housing market.

Couldn't find anything on this on the web, but I do know that Harwood Heights has been badly hurt by the loss of manufacturing, with the other punch coming from the failures of all the condominiums that were supposed to replace the factories on the tax rolls. Pontarelli's insane "Clocke Towere Pointe" and all the rest out there with "MUST SELL --HUGE DISCOUNTS" banners all over them and not even half-built yet.

How long does that "chipboard substitute" imitation lumber last -- thirty, forty years? When these places go bad and start needing lots of repairs, they'll be neglected and milked dry as "cash cows" instead -- the condo associations will quietly tear up owner occupancy requirements and you'll have The Slums Of The Future.

There are a lot of retired people there who are going to get badly hit in what seemed like a safe, quiet spot; there are hardly any city services to cut back, so they will be very directly affected.

Another tragedy.

Neither neighborhoods are that bad, relatively speaking, but yes. There is some deterioration going on, especially here in Hegewisch. Our LE here are working hard, though. There just isn't enough of them to go around.

Do we even have a beat car here?
Whoever is running for Alderman, that's the issue I'm going to ask them. How they intend to increase police presence in Hegewisch.

Vrdolyak wouldn't have tolerated this shit. He would've fixed this and gotten us the police resources we needed to save the neighborhood.

If you don't see white people in black neighborhoods, it's because you're one dumb cop. I work on the west side, whites are all over the place trying to score heroin or hookers to buy heroin for them.

-------
As someone with a Master's in Network Security, I REALLY hope this wasn't an actual directive. If so, the geeks you have in that unit have NO clue what the cops do, and how to communicate with the field.

Worse... "in reverse polarity for their own operational efficiency" that reeks of pseudo-science and government contracting that delivers by the pound not the quality of meat. 'Use big words' it justifies our salary.

"Engleworldians"?

Bravo! One of the better descriptives we've seen on the blog...

Ranks right up there with "Morlocks" doesn't it?

The blissfully unaware liberals are the "Eloi" who are nothing but walking, talking food for the "Morlocks."

Daley Inc. and the Fakir in Chief command this.

They're hoping the "Morlocks" are too stuffed from consuming the "Eloi" to take a bite out of them.

Two M/1's stop to beat the shit out of a M/2 50 YOA in 023 today. Two in custody. Nothing on the news.

I am hearing of more and more of this.

I heard of a group of roving thug M/1's going through El train cars proclaiming they were racist and they are looking for white people to beat up. They found at least one.

Be careful, tell your family to be careful.

Where is Bernie Goetz these days? On December 22, 1984 Bernie was accosted on a subway train by 4 thugs who demanded money and threatened Bernie with harm. Bernie planned his "pattern of fire" and shot 5 times, striking all 4 offenders. One was shot twice and is paralyzed from a severed spinal cord.

Bernie was found not guilty of all charges except one gun charge and did a few months in jail.

Some of these thugs beating and robbing and raping people on our streets need to meet a similar fate. Soon.

Ah ha. Thanks -- one guy can't keep up with it all anymore.

Well, at least we're safe from one thing. It won't be a Murray's Auto Parts, that chain mercifully having been absorbed into "O'Reilly's."

Murray's had the ugliest signs ever put on any business, anywhere in the world. It always amazed me that Murray's stores weren't all burned to the ground in the middle of the night, just for esthetic reasons. The things were so ugly that I'm convinced they attracted cockroaches, made your light bulbs burn out prematurely, and caused gum disease and crabgrass as well. Good riddance.

"[Mr. K's] food sucked anyways; maybe that is why John Gacy took 90% of his meals there."

What a great recommendation...[gag]

Just a thought...

Why have Police bogged down in the garden spots of the city to pacify and mollify the straight democratic voters?

This is nothing more than extortion and a guilt trip of the hard working, "up against it" tax payer.

The straight democratic voters are really saying "we ain't got shit, we don't contribute shit, we won't contribute shit but bullshit, misery and political fuckery but we want all of the good shit YOU worked hard for just because we can".

They're trying to guilt trip the fuck out of everybody else because THEY'VE ceded immense tracts of this city to criminal dogs so THEY'RE going to take Police service FROM the people who pay the most for it.

Regardless of the fact that as much as they cry and whine for the Police to "Do Something," they steadfastly refuse to help the Police help them rid the streets of vile, two legged vermin.

They hate the Police but cry for the Police at the same time.

OK then...

Only tax payers with financial skin in the game should have Police service.

The straight democratic voters and honor students can have the soon coming "cocked hat" public safety/security contractors that has some of the rev'runs and alderfools licking their chops in anticipation of sweet insider contracts.

It's a win for everybody!

No more urban translatin', Po-leece law suitin', brutality complainin', city hall marchin', ipra on speed-dialin', repetitive news media tape playin' to stir the anti-Police pot.

They'll have the pick of the litter of people who walk, talk and think JUST LIKE THEY DO attending to all their public safety needs since CPD is so out of touch and so quick to make arrests and all that tracy ladner jazz.

Do that and we tax payers will be glad to pay a little more to hire and equip CPD to keep the rest of us safe.

CPD for the tax payers...

"Cocked Hat Security" for the straight democratic voters and their liberal apologist allies...

We anticipate IPRA, local msm, phleger, meeks, jackson & co., certain select alderfools, andy dick & co. and a host of others starving to death if not flat out cannibalizing each other if CPD were to be "taken" from them in this fashion...

...We just smiled at the thought of that!

What say ye, straight dem voters?

You won't ever have to be bothered with the Po-leece again and the people you call with your problems will bring the same problem solving skill set, the same thought processes and rationale that you yourselves possess.

Right?

Mere blocks from the alder mans office plus let's not forget Alderman Tunney was himself robbed last year a block from his office. Belmont and Sheffield is overflowing with black puffy coat m/1's who live in 011 007 015 with no reason to be doing the ghetto lazy walk hunting for victims. But it's all good right Jody Weiss? I have to respectfully disagree about the characterization of 024 as undermanned. I work there and realize that while many districts in the city are woefully and dangerously undermanned, 024 simply is not one of them. The good people that live and work in Rogers Park certainly deserve sufficient police service, but we are not hurting for manpower, just to be honest about it.

I live on the extreme northwestern end of 024...where Chicago, Lincolnwood, and Skokie meet. I love it! Quiet, peaceful neighborhood. Good real estate values. People who actually take an interest in their neighborhood and look out for each other. I wouldn't want to live in any other neighborhood in the city. Well, except for during the Christmas season...when living close to the mall makes traffic in the area a little crazy.
