Cops Kill Dogs

  • Chicago police shot and killed two pit bulls after their owner ordered the animals to attack the officers, police said.

Police were investigating a report of gunshots in the 2500 block of North McVicker Avenue about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when they went to the home of 23-year-old Ivan Bernabe.

While inside talking with Bernabe’s parents, the officers saw him outside, so they walked outside and asked him to come over and speak with them on a porch, police said.

Instead, Bernabe opened a gate and let two pit bulls loose before saying, “Go get them — sic ‘em,” police said.

What's kind of amazing is the comments in the SunTimes article - they run mainly pro-police and blame the asshole for sending the dogs to attack. There were even a few that made it past the review board saying they wish the police had lit up Ivan for being such an asshole. Someone must be asleep at the switch over there.

I like dogs....should've shot the owner.

Sad for the dogs, that they were owned and used by such a shithead owner. As much of a dog lover as I am, I would shoot an attacking dog just as quickly as I would an attacking human.

The cops aren't at fault here. The shithead who sicked the dogs on the coppers should be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

What are we talking here? Eliminating the threat right. I say that we should've eliminated the puss pocket who treated those dogs that way and us of course. Besides he could have been ready to produce another dog or a knife or a gun or something shiny. Put him down thus eliminating the threat.

An interesting question is raised here regarding use of force. Would the officers be justified in using deadly force against the handler?
IMO, yes. The officers have every right to shoot the handler, as he knowingly and intentionally sent trained dogs after the officers with the intention of causing death or great bodily harm. The officers have every right to shoot the handler first, then the dogs, but not the other way around. Dogs do pose a deadly threat and when the handler (who has some form of control over them) commands the dogs to attack, he at a minimum should have been arrested for Attempted Aggravated battery or Aggravated Assault.

Very sad for the dogs. As a pit bull owner myself I can say they are a wonderful breed and are greatly mistreated by the shitheads in the ghetto. It bears repeating that they should have shot the owner.

when they transported the dead dogs to animal control, the brown pit was revived for a few seconds. when the on call vet asked "who shot you"? the dog said "rrrroooooooo that frigging johnny cakes ". he then flopped over and expired. the investigation continues.

Not surprising in a clear cut case of self defense. Even the cop haters often accept the idea that self defense is legit, even for cops.

The problems usually come in the cases that are not as clear.

I hate pitbulls -- they're such a gangbanger dog. Any one who works 015, 011, 003, 006, 007 knows this - you cant walk into a house/yard down there without wondering if one is gonna pop out from somewhere. They attack P.O.'s about as often as the assholes who own 'em. Check the national news and you will see that a P.O. has to put one or more down every few days around the country. Good riddance.

And 025...

A pit bulldog is a highly bred and selected and re-bred and re-selected killer of other dogs -- and it's been brought up on cats and other small animals as hors d'oeuvres.

Got to have something mean to protect the yard; don't want anyone stealing the dog s__t. A good dog for bangers, who like the "rep," and for "trendies" too now.

The emotionally immature thrill at
"rescuing" something like this, bringing it into the house, cooing over it, tying ribbons on it, taking snapshots -- and then get all shook when it "reverts to type" and bites the next-door toddler's face off.

You know a ghetto fad when it spreads to the suburban ladies -- I see Oak Park mommies out walking these things "for protection." They can in no way physically control the animal; that spiked choke chain they need is the tip-off. That's only for training -- and damned if these women ever train a dog as far as "Heel."

They cannot get past another harmless dog on the sidewalk without a snarling, barking, and lunging match, the woman bent backwards at 45 degrees with the leash wrapped around both wrists, heels dug into the ground, needing every ounce of her weight to barely keep the dog off the other one.

Now -- what if that half-cent Chinese rivet in the catch on the leash snaps? There is no training to fall back on that would stop the animal, and you'll have mayhem.

Good job by the police here. Like they say, "Don't worry about the owner, we'll run into him again..."

To those who commented they hate pitbulls and they are gangbanger dogs, will attack their owners in Oak Park, etc., You are as ignorant as the shitheads that abuse the dogs. For all of you who whine about the press being unfair to cops you should be the first to understand the bad rap pitbulls get. Before you go spouting off nonsense read up on the breed. Yes they fought other dogs in "pits" in england but were specifically bred to NOT attack humans so they would not bite when their handler took them out of the pit. That is why they are NOT good watch dogs. The dogs in the ghetto act the way they do due to the pieces of shit that torture and starve them. Go to badrap.org and find the facts before you talk shit. By the way pitbulls have tested at having a better temperment then golden retrievers. The highest ranking dog in the marine corps was a pitbull who reached the rank of sergeant due to his saving soldiers lives. I rescued two pits out of the ghetto years ago and they have never turned on me nor anyone else. And no I don't but bows on them either. :-)

Oh please! You couldn't be more incorrect. I mean, I know this happens, but you can't make it the rule. It's the exception. I'm a white 30yr old female with 2 pits. I can walk them together and control my dogs just fine. they don't lunge at other dogs, they don't bark at other dogs...in fact, they don't even have a reaction when other dogs in yards bark as we walk past. They're great, loyal dogs when they have the right owner. And do some research...Bully breeds test higher (better temperment) than golden retrievers according to unbiased testing done by ATTS, which performs specific, methodical testing on various breeds.

I can understand why the officer shot the dogs, I would too. Unfortunately, piece of shit scumbags get these dogs for all the wrong reasons and train them in all the wrong ways. Bullies are very intelligent and very eager to please their owner...that, mixed with their strength can be deadly with an owner with bad intentions.

Yeah, you hear about golden retrievers attacking cops and mauling kids all the time. Dumbass. You can mistreat a golden all day long and it will never attack anything. Its not in their DNA. Genetics counts for a lot, in dogs, horses, and people even though our liberal overlords deny the last part.

Ummmmm you don't hear about Golden's attacking anyone because it doesn't make for a good news story. Other breeds have a way higher bite rate than pits but it doesn't make the news. It's not in a pitbull's DNA to bite humans. Dumbass.

Also, google "fatal dog attack". Seems like the pit bull terrier has a slightly higher total of maimed humans than those ferocious Goldens.

http://www.dogbitelaw.com/Dog%20Attacks%201982%20to%202006%20Clifton.pdf

and

"According to the Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes are responsible for 74% of attacks that were included in the study, 68% of the attacks upon children, 82% of the attacks upon adults, 65% of the deaths, and 68% of the maimings. In more than two-thirds of the cases included in the study, the life-threatening or fatal attack was apparently the first known dangerous behavior by the animal in question. Clifton states:

If almost any other dog has a bad moment, someone may get bitten, but will not be maimed for life or killed, and the actuarial risk is accordingly reasonable. If a pit bull terrier or a Rottweiler has a bad moment, often someone is maimed or killed--and that has now created off-the-chart actuarial risk, for which the dogs as well as their victims are paying the price."

I have kids. I am a police officer and a RESPONSIBLE pitbull owner. They are strong dogs. Very loyal and very protective of their owners. They are also very loving and sensitive. I can take a steak bone out of my pits mouth with no problem. Could not do that with my Lab without a snarl in there. (Love Labs too btw). When u have a breed that has been used by gangbangers the breed gets a bad reputation. On the street in the late 80's it was the Rottweilers that were the choice of the shitheads. Now it is the pitbulls. It is a shame as the pits really are a great breed. It is also a shame that fear and ignorance has taken over some people. There are stories of pitbulls attacking. There are also stories of cops acting like assholes. That does not mean all of us are assholes just like at doesn't mean all pits are bad. Just please read up on them from fair sources and give them a chance. They really do deserve it as they are great.

Thanks. That's exactly the sudden "reversion to type" that concerns the rational and emotionally mature.

As for the others? Every time I've been chased or bitten, it's been officially announced to me by the owner that "MY dog is a GOOD dog!"

God, how could you tell...

Like those bent, rusty old "war souvenirs" -- the fired artillery shells with rifling marks on them and the fuze set -- you never can tell when something like this is going to go off. You can knock the thing off your dresser and nothing will happen. Years later, a truck goes over a bump three blocks away and...

No, thank you.

Again, such matters are only worrisome to the sensible.

I knew there would be some folks who run to the defense of this breed. The bottom-line is that it has a bad reputation because it deserves it. You can b.s. about golden's biting or whatever, and of course, all breeds can and have been known to bite, but they don't maul/maim/kill with the frequency of pits. A golden will bite and let go. A pit will bite and won't let go.

@9:59PM 4/1/11 -- Some of the guys' comments on here come from experience dealing with this breed, and many others, too. I've knocked on screen doors where a few seconds later a pit would run up and try to ram through the door to try and get to us, or try to climb or hop fences, even though they were unprovoked. I've also responded to more calls dealing with pits than any other dog: pits turning on their owners or some next-door neighbor's kids, etc.

CDC stats :
Most dangerous dogs that bite the most:
1. Pit Bulls
2. Rottweilers
3. German Shepherds
4. Huskies
5. Alaskan Malamutes
6. Doberman Pinschers
7. Chow Chows
8. Great Danes
9. St. Bernards
10. Akitas

I had a pit for 12 years. Found it tied to a toilet of an apartment that was vacated. She was a "bait dog"; a dog judged too docile for fighhting so they used her to train the other dogs. She was a very good dog, but the exception. She killed anything she could get at, including alot of rats. Not a family friendly breed at all, I don't care what anyone says about them getting a bad rap, they deserve it,
