DUI Wasn't the Only Problem

Rahm's got some cleaning up to do in city hiring. Shortshanks was famous for giving convicted felons all sorts of chances to get city jobs as long as they produced votes for the Machine. That appears to be the case here:
  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Tuesday he has ordered Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Tom Byrne to tighten supervision to prevent a repeat of the Gold Coast accident that saw a city laborer accused of driving drunk and plowing into a crowded sidewalk, injuring seven people.

Emanuel noted that termination proceedings have already begun for 61-year-old laborer Dwight Washington, whose blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when the accident occurred Saturday, according to prosecutors.

Of course, if anyone had looked at Dwight Washington's criminal history, they might have seen a rap sheet running back decades with convictions for Armed Robbery and assorted other offenses. Anywhere else, the hiring process is designed to catch these things before they become issues, preventing the hiring of persons with a propensity for law breaking.

Anywhere else isn't Chicago though. We imagine we're going to be hearing about many of these types of hirees slipping through the cracks in the coming years. It's like Shortshanks left us all these little surprises to remember him by for years and years to come.

CAREFUL WHAT U WISH FOR THERE ARE QUITE A FEW OFFICERS WHO HAVE CRASHED MORE THAN 1 SQUAD CAR.

SHOULD THEY BE LAUNCHED AFTER THE 3RD CRASH?

Really, SCC, you're grasping on this issue. Washington hasn't been arrested or convicted of a crime in many years...he's just a laborer, nothing more. We've seen plenty of politically connected asshats who've been caught driving city vehicles...remember the guy who headed up news affairs years ago, clean cut, young white guy? his name escapes me. And let's not forget former Commissioner of Human Services LoBianco.
A hack of a cop, and a total bum as Commish...caught driving drunk after he rear-ended another motorist, only to re-surface in a different
job with the Park District, I believe...until one of the local news networks outed him. And let's not forget Picardi's dalliances that got him bounced from fleet...isn't he still working for the CPD now, assigned to Homan Square? Criminal behavior has little to do with driving drunk....i am sure there are many, many streets and san workers who hit the sauce too heavy on a daily basis, many of whom have no criminal histories at all.

I wonder how many times Dwight Washington voted for Daley.

People were seriously injured by this guy but Daley doesn't care, as long as he got those votes.

Yes DUI wasn't his only problem...

What kind of supervision is going on here?

I'd tell you what I would do.

GPS Tracking in each and every Streets and Sans vehicle with regular audits for one. A review with background checks of all personal for two..

The city is broke and cannot afford not to do it. Million dollar law suits and rightly so in this case.

HEY RAHM!!

So if you take 500 SHITHEADS out of Cook County Jail and put them into Streets and Sanitation, then take 500 Streets and Sanitation workers and put them into Cook County Jail, does that mean we will have 500 more ADDITIONAL workers????

Sounds like a “down payment” on BULLSHIT to me.

I believe I was the first one to notify the liberal media of this guy’s RAP SHEET.
(Yes.. the department will probably try to SPAR me again!! )

If this mayor is smart he will set another 'executive order' which states that no new hired city employees will be convicted of a felony.

ALSO, random drug testing and alcohol testing for all city employees.

Is one vote worth it? Really? Oh wait, convicted felons can't vote can they?

Ah yes, poor mr. Washington, it was only armed robbery, you know , put a gun in someones face & demand money...if they resist you shoot them...just like j-walking.
Shoot at the Police, get a job at City Hall.
Reign over the most corrupt administration this City has ever known, get a job at University of Chicago on a 5 year contract.
Slap a shithead, go to jail & no more job.
No my friend, any way you slice it, this is fucked up beyond all comprehension.

OT Anyone else see the article buried in the Tribune business section today re: the 3,700 contractors who got stimulus money from the feds while owing more than
$750 million in back taxes? Wonder if these same contractors had made any political contributions in the previous elections?

.........What did the stimulus package cost the taxpaying public again? How much did it add to the deficit?

How's the Streets & San plan going to minimize medical abuse and no-shows? Progressive punishment still in the works?
It's seems the media is finally going to be busy with all the skeletons falling out of Shortshanks overstuffed closets.
Maybe Walsh Construction can start building bigger ones for Rahm.

Thank you, 12: 20am. Your comment was insightful, but you forgot former commander's killackey, convicted felon son, who rumor has it still works for the cpd. People make mistakes, things happen. If the people of entitlement get passes for criminal acts and behavior and can secure a city job, why not the other citizens who might have made a mistake, hasnt commited any more crime and may deserve a second chance. Random drug and alcohol testing for all city employees, from the mayor on down would prevent what happened with the 61year old ex-felon.

Let me get this straight,

Obama is a professor at university of Chicago,

After becoming a Sen. his wife is given a high paying job at U of Chgo,

Obama becomes Pres. thanks to Oprah,

Obama gets Congressman Rahm to be his Chief of Staff,

Rahm announces to the world he would love to be Mayor of Chicago,
BEFORE Daley announces he would not run for the office again,

While Rahm is running for Mayor and collecting large amounts of cash from rich people, Bill Daley is named to replace Rahm as Chief of staff,

Rahm gets ellected,

Rich Daley gets a job at the U of Chgo in charge of a mixed bag of nuts of made up positions.

Was I close to getting that correct?

It just does not stop.

Ex Mayor Daley it must be great to be you.

With contractual city employees, random drug and/or alcohol testing can only be attained at the bargaining table. And the unions will fight like hell to keep it out. To decrease the resistance, the city would have to attach it to a sweet deal and/or play some savvy hardball.

Either way, if random drug testing did become part of a ratiified contract with S&S employees, OEMC employees, etcetera and so on, as a result, there would be a whole bunch of job openings because of all the resignations and firings.

Obama actually TAUGHT law, as he was qualified to do.
Everybody in Chicago should know by now that Shanx never even passed his own bar exam. Anyone paying for Shanx to represent them would have nothing more than a stammering hack attorney at best. You'd likely do better hiring a former Public Defender.
