Gambling Update

  • A huge expansion of legalized gambling in Illinois is headed to the House floor.

The proposal would create licenses for five new riverboat gambling casinos. It would include a gambling boat or land-based casino in Chicago. It also would expand horse racing and add slot machines at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Lou Lang of Skokie was approved 8-3 Friday by the Executive Committee. It failed in the same committee Wednesday with only five votes.

Gov. Pat Quinn said earlier Friday he opposes “top-heavy” gambling expansion and frowned on gambling at the fairgrounds.

Still no word on our readers' proposal to direct all gambling revenues to shore up pensions though. And Quinn seems like he'd rather drive the state over the financial cliff than actually address anything that doesn't involve breaking promises and constitutional protections.

I'm going to bet it all on black...the money will go to the black hole of our Chicago Public School system.

Our pension problems could be solved by introducing a new computer system to the Illinois Department of Human Services, Illinois Department of Public Aid, Illinois Department of Public Health, etc.... People are scamming from LINK cards, child care, home care for sick and elderly, Medicaid, etc.. Did I forget the illegals who receive money from these programs?? They are only technically illegal if someone asks their legal status...which nobody can ask. Really, the medical provider industry is killing us on Medicaid fraud...the feds are getting scammed with Medicare fraud. There are entire families in the medical industry who are playing the system to scam the state and federal governments. There are not enough state police officers and federal agents to investigate the scams. A total revamp needs to occur.

There are only so many gamblers in Illinois and the US. I would say the nation is saturated with casinos. If Chicago did get a casino the corruption and mismangement would make it a dud. Maybe we could get ex Mayor Daley a job as the official greeter at the casino. Beats Walmart!

Decriminalize certain drugs and treat heroin addiction as a pubic health issue. Heroin would be available, from the state only, much cheaper than the street dope slinger, and would take the crime element out of it.

Drug addicts would then have to register and would not be able to drive a car and would buy their shit from the state. End result, not such a drain upon society and income for the state from the sale of heroin.

In all the years of narcotic drugs being illegal, all the untold billions spent has done exactly nothing to really deal with the problem.

So, cut out the middleman, help stop the spread of needle born disease and make some bucks. Addicts are going to be addicts regardless.

And cut out all the private methadone clinics, let the state run them too, hopefully cheaper than the doctors getting wealthy off it do now.

Since this the second time up for vote, I wonder what changed in the bill that got it out of committee? Also, don't think that even if we got a land base casino downtown that the promises of what they would do with the profits would be kept.

Remember when the lottery began here. All the lofty promises of the money going to the schools? How's that working for ya?

Quinn and the rest of them dont give two shits about the working class person. Most of thier pensions are all done with thier years of service. Now lets go and screw with the ones left. Take more money from us on pensions or make us work longer. Also now take more money from us to pay Com Ed. No wonder we can never get ahead. SCREW THEM ALL.

Keep in mind we're dealing with professional crooks here in Illinois. The Lotto money was supposed to go to education only. For every Lotto dollar they put in the School Fund they take away an equal amount of dollars that would have gone there from the general revenue fund. Soon, the feds are going to require your pension only "invest" in Treasuries to keep the govt. afloat a little longer.

Did anyone notice? Last week Homeland Security gave amnesty to all Haitians in the US illegally. Probably around 1 million. They can now bring their extended families here legally. After a 90 day wait they get SSI, Link cards, free medicaid etc. What pension?

The only benefactors of gambling in Chicago will be the casino owners, the politicians, and the 4-5 dozen appointed commissioners that will oversee the process.
Nowhere will a nickel be found in the pot of gold for Illinois/Chicago pensions.

If they would legalize smoking in casinos, for that matters in restaurants, the business would be booming again. Most people go to Indiana to gamble because smoking is allowed. Even in restaurants they hav non-smoking and smoking areas. In shitcago your even allowed to bring a dog to some restaurants, making it far more smelly and unhealthy than smoking. Let the waiter/waitress pet the dog and serve you food.

Nothing with people like Michael Picardi, John "Quarters" Boyle, Angelo Torres, Robert Sorich and Donald Tomczak running things with a dupe like Tom Byrne standing by to act as the hapless patsy in case shit goes wrong.

One thing, you have to get a Daley family member in there somewhere, a Vanecko or Conroy or Corbett. To carry on the family tradition you know.

Here's a radical thought. If Chicago gets a casino earmark a certain % to go directly to our underfunded pension funds. This would be an easy out for our politicians.
After all it was the politicians choosing to redirect funds from our pensions that got us into this mess. Instead of blaming public employees why not put the blame where it rightly belongs directly at the feet of these greedy politicians? Instead of dumping on the poor public employees by trying to legislate pension reform why not force these politicians to come clean and fix this problem without trashing public employee pensions that were gauranteed long ago.

I agree, everyone is worried about his clout so they keep quiet and let him say what ever he want's. He's got the Commander snowed with all those "gifts" to the front office but we'll see if it continues once the upcoming changes are made.
He's so annoying and obnoxious it's unbelievable. He says the same words over and over all day. Give it a break already!

Legislative Update!
by Sean Smoot on Monday, May 30, 2011 at 3:45pm.

Victory in Spring Session!!!

But War on Public Pensions Far from Over

The Illinois General Assembly issued a statement today which confirms that our efforts to oppose the attacks on public pensions this session were successful. As the clock began winding down in the last hours of session it became clear to House and Senate leadership that the votes to move SB 512 sponsored by Representative Tom Cross (R-Oswego) simply did not exist.

However, it is clear from the General Assembly statement, which incredibly was signed by anti-pension activist Ty Fahner, who is not a member of the General Assembly that - while we won a decisive victory in this battle

– the war against our pensions is far from over.

Illinois General Assembly

May 30, 2011

STATEMENT REGARDING PENSION REFORM

We are absolutely committed to reforming Illinois’ public pension system for current employees. It must be done to stabilize our systems and address long term financial issues for both the public employee pension systems and state government.

We believe passage of legislation addressing this issue is essential to the state’s well being.

It was made very clear during the May 26th hearing in the Personnel and Pensions Committee that both those who support pension reform and those who are opposed to Senate Bill 512 acknowledge we have a problem and something must be done.

Our goal is to enact reforms to our pension systems that provide a long term solution for both those who are members of the pension systems and those who fund them.

We will convene meetings over the summer to address the issues and concerns that have been raised and work toward a solution in this year’s Fall Veto Session.

-Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan

-Illinois House Republican Leader Tom Cross

-Tyrone Fahner, President, Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago

Thank you to all of the members, friends, and family who made phone calls and sent emails to their Representatives and Senators and thank you to our partners in the We Are One Illinois campaign who stood shoulder to shoulder with us throughout the legislative session.

We will keep you informed as pension related issues develop over the summer.

Another Legislative Victory –

Thanks to the efforts of Representative John D'Amico (D-Chicago) HB 1985 passed both houses and is headed to Governor Quinn for signature.

HB 1985 mandates that municipal police agencies (cities and counties) that receive false complaints filed against law enforcement officers forward those cases to the appropriate State's Attorney for review and prosecution.

While current law requires complaints against police officers to be supported by a sworn affidavit many departments do not send cases of false complaint cases for prosecution.

We appreciate Rep. D’Amico’s diligence in moving this legislation through the process on behalf of Illinois’ Finest.

Springfield is screwing up gambling too! The solution is not 5 more casino licenses. The solution is one more license for Chicago, increase the gaming positions at existing casinos to 3300 to compete with Indiana & Iowa casinos.Let people smoke in casinos, reduce the tax to 25%, Chicago casino revenue goes to shore up pension plans, keep slot machines out of airports, let race tracks have slots. But Springfield needs the revenue from casino licenses up front more than it needs to do the right thing.

Re casinos: they threw a bone to Downstate interests - casinos in Danville and Galesburg IIRC. Makes passage more likely if they perceive they're getting a piece of the action.

Nevertheless, throwing the dough down the greedy maws of the 'school system' won't do sh!t - that $ needs to go to fund police and fire pensions IMHO.

That money should be controlled And steered toward making our pension soluble, hiring at least 2000 police firemen etc. Then use the funds to replace the grants that pay for all of our equipment and training.

Of course Jesus C is busy right now planning his return trip but we'd have to find someone honorable to manage the funds.

The machine has no other choice but to finally allow a casino in the shitty, who are you going to complaine to anyhow??

Now they will once again have casinos under their control and can start the skim.
