Billboards?

These people don't live here. They don't vote here. They certainly don't pay any taxes here. So Why are we trying to impress these people? Are we thinking they'll call Rahm and ask him to give us a raise? If so, then hopefully this works:
  • World leaders arriving in Chicago for the NATO Summit will be treated to a local controversy during their motorcade rides downtown, thanks to an advertising campaign bankrolled by the police union and timed to embarrass Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

On Thursday, the Fraternal Order of Police paid to put up giant red billboards on the Kennedy, Dan Ryan and Stevenson expressways that state, “Keep Chicago Safe. Hire More Police Officers.”

Similar ads are also going up on 54 CTA buses, fifteen rapid transit stations and on six digital screens across the city.

Maybe the money would be better spent trying to directly short circuit these supposed "reforms" in Springfield.

The Billboards are great and show some balls that the previous administration sorely lacked. We have to fight fire with fire. In addition, we do have to combat the pension attack very strongly as well.

Agreed SCC maybe we could get "donations" like rahm says he has done for nato, you know to help us spread the word!

Each of the billboards cost at least 5000. Id rather the union just payoff some politicians with it to ensure a favorable vote come pension bill time. Geez didnt anyone teach shields anything. He doesnt even know the Chicago way. We are doomed.

Nope, sorry SCC, but I think the billboards are a good preemptive tactical move, going into contract negotiations.

Mike,
Is the leader of Pakistan or Spain going to care about how many police officers are not being hired in Chicago?

Get real, the problem is that you backed the Democratic machine in the elections. We are losing because of your chronism.

You backed a guy who was a DUI defense attorney whose father was a County Board of education Hack over a PO. Yes the PO didn't have an A game, but she would be loyal to us.

Ummmm, mike? Shields? What are you doing??? Your wasting our union dues on this crap? Dont fight your fight in the land of public opinion. The public does not decide our contract, a arbitrator does. Guess what mike, thats rule number one when it comes to arguing a contract. Your taking it to a personal level. The only thing you do is make the cpd look like a bunch of whiners and cry babies picking the summit to make the mayor and city look like idiots. Classless mike. Lets not forget, this is not a high school popularity contest. This is major negotiations. You are screwing them up. You keep saying how the city is getting public opinion against the police but it has nothing to do with it at all... You have one thing to worry about and one thing only.. fighting at the table and making a strong case for one person.... The arbitrator. Simple, however... it seems as if you want to complicate things shields.. grow up. Why the hell did we elect you????

We haven't heard shit from our Union about anything and now they are wasting our money on useless ads on billboards. The Evil Racoon could give a fuck less if you put up 10,000 billboards. He will just sneer at you and piss in your face. The Evil Racoon treats us like we are toys in his city play box. Maybe if our downtown is destroyed by the maniac demented Anarchist then maybe he will have to pay the price.

Wow, everyone talks a big game, yet no one has the stones to throw their hat in the ring come election time. As per usual with the majority of CPD - all talk and no walk bitches. This is war, and billboards are an excellent part of the psychological aspect in things. Our armed forces do the same type of shit (drop propaganda from planes). If you don't think this has a positive influence for the "good guys" then I sure as hell won't smarten you up now as your beyond help and hope. FOP is just getting started and if you're too stupid to see that shame on you. And I see Stoppas cheerleaders have returned. Fucking pathetic.

Put up or shut up. Yea, I know, you're too busy to get involved with your very livelihood.

Lets be honest. Most of the whiners are on this blog. I think the billboards look great. The message is clear. Something that we all know is a problem. We are so short on the street. I have never seen it like this in my 20 years on the job. This was a good move by the FOP. We finally have someone who has been telling the media for almost a year that we need more policeman and whinners like you come on here and bash him. Why would anyone want to be the president of knucleheads like you.

Thanks for posting Mike. You call it a "show of balls", many of us would call it a very expensive waste of our union funds that will provide almost no return. Commenters bitch Shields doesn't publically comment on anything, when in reality I see Shields publically comment more than any other FOP president in past 30 years. Now the guy gives Rahm and city officials a rather polite shot, and some commenters still bitch. No doubt these non Shields fans are ones who lost the past election.

Everyone is complaining that the department is drastically understaffed by thousands of officers, and because everyone is detailed to NATO, no one is protecting the citizens in their neighborhoods. Everyone is complaining that the officers will be blamed for riots that the protestors incite and for the physical destruction that the protestors do. Everyone is complaining that this is what the city officials and news media will portray for the world to see.

I thought the advertisements were brilliant and the public display of the signs was timed very well. The subtle message says - Rahm and McCarthy are lying to the public and to their political superiors about crime in Chicago. This was done for all the world to see.

And I liked Shields comment how Rahm is not worried about 20 murders every weekend so why should he worry about some little signs?

Good job Shields and company!

You are an absolute fucking idiot.

The billboards and the bus-train ads are an excellent move. Shields remained true to the FOP practice of not negotiating in the media, but he sure is using the media quite effectively to get the message out and give TD 9.5 and McClownie the angry squirts. Give credit where credit is due. Shields deserves a pat on the back for this move.

I only wish I had voted for Shields in the last election, but I will next election. It seems he has the right combination of smarts and stones.

You're absolutely correct, SCC. This was an unbelievable waste of money. Hiring more police officers? Not going to happen. And doing so benefits FOP, not you or me. Put up signs demanding a decent contract and a stop to planned pension "reforms" that only cost us - the ones who DIDN'T create the pension deficits.

FOP you screwed up big time.

From not a cop, just a city laborer.
Beware of false friends. The ones that take your money will be the first to betray you. Alderman Ed Burke's brother, St Rep Dan Burke has been working overtime since last April (2011) to scuttle all city pensions. When confronted on his doublecross, he whined Rahm and Madigan made him do it. Rahm's chief lobbyist to eff our pensions is Matt Hynes, brother of Dan Hynes, son of Tom Hynes. We are being robbed by the south side Irish.

I have to agree with the post that said no matter what your union does they are basically wrong. By the city not hiring this effects our pensions simply because thousands are not paying into it. If the violent crime continues through the summer the city will have to hire more police. I think the billboards were a great idea.
